momentum is it worth it?

Featured Replies

hi everyone having been using shell v power which i like, now prices have gone through the roof i thought about using tesco momentum, and at 5 pence cheaper looks very attractive, i know some of the scoby boys use it and like it, but how does it fare in a vrs, do many people on here use and like it, or is there better out there, cheers, everyone.

I think my car runs better on Tesco's 99 than V-power.

I've run it before, and works well in my car... just a shame its not available up here! lol..

In my opinion Tesco Momentum @ 99 ron is worth using and my choice over Shell V Power regardless of price.

I Have used Sainsbury Super Unleaded 97 ron during the winter when the car is being used in a relaxed manner.

I would not use it when using the car hard.

I mainly use Momentum but the odd time I use V-Power I cart notice much of a difference, if any.

My first fill up after I got it was VPower because 99 was out. It came with 1/2 a tank of 95 and it felt ok but nothing special. With VPower it went a lot quicker. After that it's always run Momentum and I've had no problems. Good mpg now and great power.

No doubt you'll find a story about how Thorney have thrown their toys out of the pram now Momentum99 is sponsoring MG instead. They even stopped recommending it even though they did a test a few years ago saying performance cars run a lot better with it.

I personally get about 5mpg less using momentum than vpower and the car doesn't feel as nice to drive either

I have used tesco 99 and shell v power since 15miles (delivery) wouldn't put anything less in tbh

Wish I had either close by! Alas all I have is Esso or Sainsbury's 97 unless I go for a long run

In Harrogate:-

Sainsbury's 97 RON £1:31.9

BP Super 98 RON £1:48.9

"Guess which I use in both cars"

I have used momentum almost from day 1 and find it is fine.

I agree with pitbull and use momentum but find economy much better with v power. Don't know why, but maybe to do with remap?

Can you swap from a 95 to a higher octane or am I stuck. Been using 95 for last year and a half

I would suggest you do start using 98 RON petrol, Actually i would suggest that you use the available 99 RON.

as 98 RON minimum is the recommended fuel for a vRS.

I would at the very least go to 97 RON.

Unless you only do town and slower speed driving i think you will find the Fuel Economy will cancel the 25 pence to 30-40 pence a gallon extra.

You certainly will or should notice the difference at higher speeds if using the engine as its able to be used.

Sainsburys 97 is only 3p more than 95 and gives me about 2-3mpg more plus a slightly smoother drive. Car feels slightly quicker too. Haven't noticed any difference between Sainsbury 97 and vpower on my car (aside from the huge price difference). For me Sainsbury 97 is the best all-around option....

I've never put anything other than V-Power in mine and that won't change unless I'm running low somewhere without a Shell station in sight (doubtful given the 400+ mile range).

So I can swap and no damage will happen to filters etc?? I'll give it a go next time im empty and see the performance changes

No filters or anything to worry about.

Just start using it really.

If you do want to notice the difference, you could run the tank down.

I would actually top up now with 99 or 98. & not wait.

The plugs and the engine, 'cat' will benefit in the long run as will your pocket.

re the other 'DSG' 'S' Thread.

You might find it smoother from cold and once you get the chance to have 'S' change up to '6th' it will be important to be on the good stuff.

The Owners manual is not very good at explaining the DSG as in the vRS, & Dealers are a joke.

I hope you guys are soo happy you have access to any form of super unleaded, i can only get 95 it sucks if i realised before i brought it as it was never ever stated by the dealer that it was a minimum requirment to use 97 i would never have brought it as much as i love the car and it does still pull well

Mate I wouldn't worry about it. A lot of people on here use super unleaded but that won't be the case nationally. The vast majority if owners across the country will be putting in reg unleaded without a second thought and have no problems. Don't listen to any scare stories of "you'll lose 20bhp" or "the engine will blow up if you don't use super". Just enjoy the car and dont fret because you might not be getting the theoretical benefits of a more expensive fuel (prepares to be flamed lol)

I haven't tried momentum yet, but running on 99 Ron is much better for the vrs. Tried both bp ultimate 97 and Esso supreme before and they weren't very good on power or mpg. Last tank was with v-power and the difference is very noticeable. Much better mpg without really trying and the car is much more eager. I've also got around 30 extra miles on a tank compared to the bp stuff.

I use 95 and get 360 motorway miles before I hit redline and I sit at 80mph most Of the way

I havnt seen any posts on this forum, that engines blow up or anything like.

People can use what they like, fuel in the UK is of a pretty good quality.

But Octane Ratings is not just some urban or internet myth.

The Manufacturer of certain Engines build them and recommend a fuel, in the vRS case it is 98 ron & use 95 ron if you must but use 98 again when you can.

They know how its set, plugs, compression etc & where the best performance and economy might be achieved.

Its not Rocket Science or even Rocket fuel. just petrol with a minmum octane rating recommended for 1390cc Twin Charger in this case.

If an engine is performing to your needs then thats surely between you and your pocket.

I would use 97 if i could get hold of it, i have a tuning box which i have removed for a service and i dont think i will be sticking it back on because without using an octane booster the box/wngine just doesnt preform well on 95, i think if i do use tuning box again i will having setting 1 and work up because i found setting 5 pushing the engine too much and just doesnt perform lyk it does with the box off

I bet even the 95 isn't cheap on Lewis!
