What Horn can I get?

Featured Replies

Hi All

The Horn on my Fabia is dead... Sounds aweful!!

Anyone know if it's worth looking for an aftermarket one or should I just get one from the dealers?

If there are any aftermarket ones out there what is the Best/Easiest one to fit? Would prefereably like something witha good strong tone...I use to love the one on my old MK2 scirocco!! Sounded like the QE2 coming in to dock

Anyone had any experience fitting a new horn on a VRS??

Cheers

Greg

Try a Stebel Nautilus

Meant to be LOUD and quite compact.

This tbh, I used to have one on my Classic Mini, went through about 3-4 sets of air horn's where trumpets and the compressors broke on them. Bought one of these and it was fantastic. Rated at 138dB it certainly gave a fright to some people who decided to pull out on me not expecting such a loud horn from a small car.

You can see the horn in the top left hand corner just infront of the fuse box.

Thanks very much :)

Yeah it's a 1380cc, running a wedged crank, lightened con rod's straight cut gearbox, kent 286 camshaft, ultralight flywheel and backplate with an AP racing rally clutch, weber 45 carb, Stage 4 modified head running a 12.5:1 compression ratio, made 115bhp on a good day with 93 lbs ft of torque.

Another vote for the Stebel nautilus!

Had one in my felicia. It fit in the same place as the original. Obviously requires a seperate power supply and a relay (draws up to 20 amps!) but worth it.

It was mega loud! My favourite thing to do was press the horn in underground car parks etc. Epic!

All the lights in my Felly used to dim when I used it hehe

A friend of mine runs a train horn with compressor :)

You ever seen the videos on Youtube? Hilarious fun driving round scaring people. Lol

yeah its funny

Also seen some SUVs with ferry/ship horns on. Stupidly loud! (ear defenders required!)

Hi Guys,

Thanks for your responses! And yeah... That's one seriously pretty mini Southy!!

I'd heard other people talk about the Stebel Nautilus on here before and I've had a little hunt around in the past, but I thought it was no longer being sold? There seemed to be ones that were called "Stebel Nautilus" but when you looked at the description it says that it's an immitation version... not a proper Stebel??

Anyone know where I can get a proper one from?? Preferably a compact one so I dont have to take off the whole bumper to fit it... I'm still a bit of a noob with a spanner :-)

Cheers

Thanks Southy... I appreciate the quick response!!

I'll go and grab one tomorrow and hopefully I can fit it on the weekend when I do my Discs and Pads.

Cheers Fella

No problem Greg boredom has set in at work watching this callipers and alloy disc bells be machined so thought Id pop on the site haha.

Don't forget a relay, some thick wire and a fuse for it. Like I said it draws about 20 amps!

If it's as good as the stebel you won't be disappointed!

Phil

Is there any simple plug and play replacements? I wanna get a louder one but can't be bothered to faf about with relays and wires lol

Ahhhh ok... Thanks for the heads up!! Is this something fairly easy to do? as I said I'm not 100% confident tinkering with the car as yet. Where would I need to fit the relay and fuse? I guess it would come with some kind of Diagram of what I need to do?? Or am I being optimistic :-)

My stebel came with a diagram but not sure about the halfords one.

Basically you need a live from battery with an inline fuse to relay. Output of relay to the horn. Earth from horn to earthing point on car body etc. Then connect the horn connections on the car across the relay.

Not sure what the connections are like on the car to the horn. You may need to tap into the wire with some scotch blocks.

Think halfords do a wiring kit with a relay and wiring included.

Thanks Phil... I may see if halford have the wiring kit while I'm there!

Cheers for all the advice Guys

P.S If you dont hear from me again I've probably electrocuted myself ... Me and electrics dont tend to mix :-) LOL

Hi... Sorry for another stupid question! I was having a look at the fuse panel layout on another site and it says the horn is already rated to 20 amps? If that is the case do i need the relay etc?

Or is this why I get electrocuted every time I fiddle with electrics ;-)

Ah right. Well maybe not.

It will depend on the wiring to the horn if it can handle the full 20 amps. Have a look how thick it is.

ok will do... Shall try and have a look tomorrow.

ok... Carrying on from yesterday!!

I've now manage to get the fog light grille off and have a look at the horn.

As you will see from the pictures below it looks as though there is currently 2 horns (1 high tone and 1 low tone) that have a single block connector going to each.

Going into each of these block connectors seems to be 2 wires??

post-36670-0-61879400-1345567829_thumb.jpg

How would I go about running wires from those block connectors to the terminals on the new horn??

post-36670-0-92243900-1345567857_thumb.jpg

I guess some 20+amp wire which has some female spade connectors on one end would attach to the terminals on the new horn. But what I'm not sure about is how I attach the new 20+ amp wire to the existing block connectors?

I suppose I will have to take the bumper off to have a proper look at what is what as it's quite cramped in there to see anything!!

Is it hard work to get the bumper off one of these??

Also... Anyone got any Idea why (in the same hole as the horn) there is some random wires going to a block connector that is attached to nothing?? (See pic below)

The existing wiring for the horn in the Fabia is capable of 20 A and the fuse is already 20 A as standard, plus the circuit supplies no other electronics. You can just hook it straight up without a relay.

You appear to have the better horn in the range fitted. Mine was just a single thing.

I hooked up my Stebel Nautilus compact with 2 lengths of wire of appropriate gauge for 20 A. A female connector on one end of the wire, and a male connector on the other to fix into the original plug. I believe the brown wire is the negative one on the connector. I wrapped some self-amalgamating tape around the end of the plug and wires to prevent water ingress. If there are two plugs, make sure the other gets fully sealed against water ingress.

I found I needed to space out the horn from the body, and use the original bracket to fix it. Yours came with a little black plastic spacer that fixes to the bolt? Your original horn does not have the same bracket as my original did, so you'll have to get creative here, or possibly make up your own bracket.

I'm not sure what the unknown connector is. So long as there's no faults logged in VCDS I think you'd be ok. It could just be the connector used for cars with a single tone horn?

Here's my thread from when I fitted one http://www.briskoda.net/forums/topic/168289-fitting-stebel-nautilus-full-size-possible/#entry2054968

I went a bit mad and later fitted the full size Stebel Nautilus on the other side of the car in addition to the compact (needing a relay of course due to extra load).

Could you get a oem one cheap from a scrappy?
