iPhone 5 or Next iPhone...

Featured Replies

Well it says "FOR NOW" I believe that this imply that they are working for more card providers to join. This izettle looks like a really nice service. I am wondering how long before they roll one for Android as well?

There is some dispute with Visa and it already works on Android.

Those 30 pin dock connectors to 'lightning' converters are listed at $29....... Going to cost a fortune for people to make everything compatible! Let's hope that China get some cheap equivalents released ASAP!

Edit: And £25 in the UK!

They are already on eBay for a couple of quid!!

They are? Any chance of a link?

I like the new iPhone5 and I'll be upgrading as soon as I can in December. Well smart!

Wife is having an iPhone 5 shortly and we're selling her 4.

I'm selling my HTC Sensation and living on my poverty 6310 for the time being. I really fancy a Lumia 920 though..... Yes I know :D

Specs are almost as good as the Samsung.

Thinking about the dock converters a bit more, it depends on what you are connecting to how cheap it can be.

On the old connector, depending on what it's being used for there's power, analog audio, digital audio, video, firewire, USB and probably a few more wires.

On the new connector there's only 8 pins and just digital data so an official adaptor that supports all of these is going to have some fairly complicated electronics inside - it's akin to a port replicator on a laptop docking station, so £25 isn't an unrealistic price.

If all you want is a simple converter that will give you USB and power then it's going to be dirt cheap.

I'll be ordering an iPhone 5, admittedly it is pretty pants BUT the value of my 4S will plummit once it is released so I might as well :)

I've sort of grown out of phones now. Bought my HTC Desire over 2 years ago and still rings and texts and that's all I use it for now. Bought the Nexus 7 and while at home I don't use my phone anymore. Got a sim only with Virgin who after messing me about for 3mths gave me it for less than £10/month but still 600mins and unlimited texts like my original contract. When the day comes and I need a new phone I'll still be sticking with Android but won't be an expensive one. Do like the look of the Lumia's camera though.

True - but on their site the adapter is listed as 'not supporting video or iPod out' - presumably it does support audio!

Bet it out performs it ;) (even with a lesser spec as you say :))

That looks a bit of a beast really. Given that many iDock products offer physical support to the iDevice, this will lift it clear by some distance. The iPhone 5 is bigger than the 4S, even with the "it's lighter", it still looks like a candidate for something being broken.

NFC is gaining ground slowly, with players like the banks involved that will speed up. SGSII has it, seems odd that iPhone 5 doesn't. Maybe Apple will sue everyone for leaving them behind. ;)

So, as predicted, nothing new at all. All you get is a 4S with a bigger screen (but still smaller than rivals) and the chance to pay £25 for adaptors that are going to break.

In the same way that the eternal struggle between Ford's Focus and Vauxhall's Astra goes. Never actually released head-to-head, always time enough apart to pinch ideas from each other......or know what not to put on.

Saying the iPhone's hardware is better than the Samsung's now is no better than saying that when the SGSIII was released it was better than the 6-month old 4S at the time.

Not so sure that EE's 4G announcement is any help either. Only 16 "major" cities by the end of the year, unless you live in one of those cities, you'll be on 3G most of the time (at best) (Bit like bio-ethanol: yippee it's cheap and green, but only available on a very very limited number of forecourts.)

It's just a simple DAC and won't be super high quality. Small circuit board with direct lines for power and digital audio, then power to the DAC from the dock and doing DAC for audio/video.

Those chips are a few cents each in quantity. Even with markup of 100% and packaging I'd expect to see the cheapest ones of lower quality for £2.50 retail and a better quality DAC one for £5 to £10 depending on how good a DAC they use.

£25 is the standard cost for all mac converters and they'll be making a mint off them.

It will certainly have a much higher FLRV point and IMHO a much lower RUV point.

That's fanboy love referenced value and real user value.

Personally it's totally underwealming, not worth money over the contract phones that are cheaper/free and just broke the dock lock in.

If you're going to break lock in to existing product such as the dock, you have to do it with a product that's the mutts nuts so people deal with it.

I don't see an investment in adapters and a new phone which offers little over a 4s is going to convince enough people.

Most current iPhone users will buy anyway as it's Apple. Any converts won't have issues with lock in. The fact they've killed the dock connector with an evolutionary phone is testament to how much faith they have in their brand loyalty.

Yep - there seems to be lots of confusion about the 4G nonsense - again it looks like O2 and Vodafone's network is not going to be supported. VERY confusing!

Oh well, that'll make all that accessory stock obsolete in one fell swoop.

Now, if someone can point me towards a dirt cheap, high end, iPad compatible speaker dock (B&W etc), I'm all ears.

That izettle thing looks great. But seems they dont work with Visa?

Not yet, but they're in talks, so watch their website. ;)

The fact they've killed the dock connector with an evolutionary phone...........

Er, you might want to read the release again. All they've done is swap one connector for another (Lightning.)

A testament to loyalty, yes. A testament to screwing every last penny out of people, yes. IIRC Apple signed in to the "common interface" agreement whereby the same connector would be used for charging and data (IIRC micro-USB) across all manufacturers. So, in a couple more years time, Apple will move to that, leaving everyone's investment in iDock2 slipping down the toilet. That's not innovation, that's greed. They could have easily moved to the (royalty-free) common interface now, but alas, greed takes priority over everything else. The Lightning licensing will be worth far more in revenue than using common interface.

It's not just the data either, a whole duplicate power-supply thing too. No longer will your iPad and iPhone be able to use the same charger (I wonder how many iSheep have chargers at home and at work, handy when they took the same connector though.) Now, you'll have to buy another charger for work. Ker-ching!

Not yet. Expect a revised phone when O2 and Vodaphone get their 4G up and running.

Apple has shifted to that agreement... by buying the adapter... It circumvents it in an evil way, but that's what they did!

Yes. I meant the 30pin dock connector is dead. the 8pin Lightning connector is now 'it'.

Give up with the iSheep nonsense. Can you not comprehend that some people have made a considered rational choice and bought apple products?

Yes, there are some obsessive apple fans who have more money than sense (iPod collectors spring to mind) but that's not everyone.

It's like playground name calling over whether the Spectrum or Commodore 64 is the better computer.

You haven't even got your facts right anyway. You won't need a new charger for work - all you'll need *if* you buy a new iPhone is a new USB to lightning cable that will just plug into the existing spare charger you have. That will be a couple of quid and is hardly going to make a big difference to your pocket or apple's profits.
