Idle and cutting out problem

Featured Replies

Hi guys

I have an issue and I cant figure what's causing it

1. When the car is idling the engine doesn't seem to tick over smooth and sometimes hunts

2 I have a problem that doesn't always happen but when I'm pulling p to a roundabout / junction with the clutch down the revs die all the way down till it stalls this doesn't happen all the time but have also noticed sometimes the revs will get to about 500 then shoot upto 1000 then come down again

Anybody have any ideas

Many thanks lee

You had it on diags yet?

What's diags mate is that getting it plugged in buddy if so not yet

Yea. See if someone in your area has VCDS who can help out - Or download the free version - See if this brings up any fault codes.

Cheers mate will try and download it

you need to get the car scanned for fault codes but it could be the coolant temperature sensor.

Can u use the fault readers u get on eBay

Can u use the fault readers u get on eBay

Maybe, some generic OBD scanners won't pick up all faults.

A cheap option would be to buy the cheap cable from Gendan and download VCDS-lite. It should be fine for just checking faults.

Will I need a pc/ laptop all I have is an iPad looks like I'll have to get the garage to do it

also worth doing simple stuff first. Start with throttle body clean and check all the vac/boost pipes. First place to look would be the Y pipe off the right hand side of the block (you will need to remove the engine cover to see it) then the one that goes down from there to the crank breather. Then all the smaller lines, Generally Hunting idle will be on the vac side of things so Pre-Turbo

Cheers mate will have a look today

Had similar on mine last year not long after buying it.

Got to the point where I struggled to drive it home from work, it cut out, wouldn't idle right, felt like it was missing, jerking etc.

Figured I'd chance unplugging the MAF sensor. No more problem. So new MAF fitted and all good again.

Might be worth a try?

Matt

Hi , is it something like this ?

Jesus - That RPM is all over the place. Doesn't that make the engine shake erratically? Wont this damage the engine mounts if left?

Yea think I'm going to have to take it to a garage to get it sorted just hoped it was something I could sort out

Yes it was Very bad . Once it was of the choke as i call it it was fine . I fitted a new air intake temp sensor and it cured it straight away ! Dont know if it will yours , Only cost me someting like £13 2 and half years back .

Things just got worse and the engine light is now on and the fumes are unreal hopefully get it scanned tomorrow

Check your breather pipes under the inlet manifold and the y pipe.
