Is it just a fine waiting to happen or not ?

Thanks in advance for the comments

Dunno, measure it.

"When replacing your number plate you should make sure that the correct material has been used to manufacture the plate. It should be made from a reflective material. Front number plates must display black characters on a white background and rear number plate must display black characters on a yellow background.

The Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency is not aware of any self-adhesive number plates that meet the British Standard requirements.

Characters on a number plate can be 3D, providing they meet all the other requirements, but honeycomb or other background patterns are not allowed.

Also, the characters on a number plate need to be a standard height and width.

Your number plate should show the correct:

  • character height - 79 millimetres
  • character width - 50 millimetres (except the figure 1 or letter I)
  • character stroke - 14 millimetres
  • space between characters - 11 millimetres
  • space between groups - 33 millimetres
  • top, bottom and side margins - minimum 11 millimetres
  • space between vertical lines - 19 millimetres"

In a word - yes

It measures 9x3. Might keep a full size spare in the boot for just incase then.

it's a fine mate, no British standard mark or postcode for the plate maker, why don't you get a plate made on vinal and put it under a sun strip on the upper windscreen, i'am planing to do that or something very similar .

Neither of these were a requirement back in '03 as far as I'm aware. But there are of course other issues... ;)

What other issues mate ?

Well the size for a start. Unless that's a f*&"£$*g HUGE remote...

It's the regs in force when the plate was made that matters.

Haha, no standard remote.

Ah well we will try it and then decide what to do if i do get stopped.

Other options for a front plate on a widemouth vrs bumper ?

well as i understand it as long as it's on display being inside our out i would suggest 2 elastic bands and the original plate and mount it on the drivers or passengers sun visor to be flipped down at your own pleasure, while having your "show plate" on the bumper, i understand that too be legal so long as the sun visor is down all the time showing the other plate, but whos not to say it wasn't down the entire duration of your journey Wink wink

I have previously been stopped by the police for my front windows bein tinted to dark ( previous owner ), was thinking of the old " the last officer that stopped me said it was ok " line.

May have to rethink this plan though

well as long as the original plate is being displayed to the front and is visible it's alright to have a show plate...

What he said, twice

I don't think that would count as a defence in court

What? How on earth is anybody supposed to prove the age of the plate. So me getting a white on black metal plate for a 1970 registered Cortina would be illegal then?

Nope!

Show plates are for shows (strangely), or off public places, legal plates are required the rest of the time

It's not rocket science

Any other suggestions as to what i could do ?

Here is the pdf of V796 (Display of Registration Marks for Motor Vehicles).

These regs apply to vehicles registered after 1973, so the 1970 Cortina would be OK.

Which one, the one with the "wink wink" at the end?

Eithere or, if he puts the show plate on and doesn't display it's stand uk plate to the front then it's illegal, if he does display the uk stand one with the showplate it's legal weathere it's mounted from the visor so long as the uk standard is visible from the front, personaly i dont see why cars should have a front facing registration as motor bikes don't but rules are rules

This I know. What I am saying is you could also only apply what was relevant in 2003 to a plate on a 2003 car. There is absolutely no way of proving the age of the plate, unless somebody is able to either;

a ) find a witness at the shop willing to stand up in court

b ) carbon date it

Neither of which is ever likely to happen.

I just trimed down a std plate so i kept std size characters..

But that's just as illegal as it hasn't got the correct size margins.
