Insurance premiums

Featured Replies

I have a few vehicles through my companies insurance which is on a block policy and decided I needed to put some no claims back on my personal insurance.

Anyhow I have a slightly modified MKIV Golf Gti turbo so decided to put on my own insurance.

2 years NCD carried over from block insurance.

I have 8 points and am 39 years old and I am paying £1000 per year.

What points have you (if any) what age are you, what car you have and what you're paying.

Let's see the differences!

Lots of quotes about prices that are unfortunately worthless, as there are two further details required:

the postcode of the area in which you live,

the risk factor of your job.

Even with those details, comparing one price against another is not really going to help, insurance is all tailored to the individual risk presented, almost every question you are asked at quotation stage will effect the price you pay.

Even with the post code and job risk there is such a discrepancy between the various different companies. Just phone round or use the internet for quotes and see the variance in them.

When we moved house the new post code is supposed to be better, wife's insurance went up and mine went down!

I currently have no ponts, but in my past I have had 6 points at a time. These were for bog standard speeding(SP30 I think) and seemed to make little if any difference. I have been told, not sure how true, that generally speeding points up to 6 are not seen as an issue. It is only when you go higher or have a code relating to dangerous, careless, drink, drug, etc that they hike it up. Brother had a careless driving on his licence and paid a lot more than me.

An Online or on the phone quote will change by the day, time of day, middle of the night or Bank Holiday Weekend etc.

I check during the middle of the night on Comparison Sites & there can be some amazing 'Buy Now's, which are fine to take if your Details were all put in correctly & you are ready to go.

The Sites are trying to stay in the Top Ten Cheapest etc, and a good buy or bargain can be had, compared to the same deal during the day. JME.

I think we also need to see the excess that is being carried as this can make a big difference.

I noticed a big drop in prices this year Vs last on the comparison sites.

The last few years they rarely beat my renewal quote by a significant margin. This year it dropped by over £100 and my previous insurer declined to compete. and that was with reducing my voluntary excess from £350 to £150.

For the first time my insurance is cheaper than my road tax.

Also it's not just how many points you have, but what you got the points for. I suspect an SP50 (driving in excess of motorway speed limit) will increase premiums less than CD10 (driving without due care and attention), despite both being carrying a minimum 3 points.

Won't bother posting my taxi insurance as its a fortune lol
