Wheel hop

Featured Replies

Ok, so if I put some power down, instead of just spinning, sometimes the front wheels 'hop'. Sounds & feels horrible, and surely can't be right?

Is there something specific going / gone wrong? Getting it up on the ramps this weekend for something else, so an opportune moment to check this out.

Ta very much

Mine does the same mate, I think it's as the boost kicks In its a combination of slip and grip and can be jerky, dissent sound nice or feel nice. I wouldn't worry too much buddy

My Fabia used to do it, my Golf did it and my Polo does it sometimes if I'm not careful - maybe it's just a VAG trait? Used to get it in the RX-8 too, but usually that just span them up freely rather than hopping.

I've heard it can be bad for driveline/drive shafts though?

I've often wondered if fitting worse tyres would solve it, so they're not switching between having/losing grip, and would just spin freely (not that it's a good solution!).

The banging is just the shocker going up and down.

Yes its bad for the car.

Thanks guys. Hasn't always done it, and has been getting worst recently, making me think not a normal thing. Done some more reading and found some useful info:

Uprated all my bushes at the front about two years ago, so will check them & then me shocks..

What tyres are you using?

How are your console bushes?

Bushes are the key here....

Mine did it with knackered standard console bushes.

I had Cupra (Solid) console bushes fitted and its still there but has reduced it by about 75%

mine's does it very mildly in the wet if you give it full welly, classsic front wheel drive axle tramp. Any worn bushes etc. will exacerbate it.

the only thing not right is you driving style learn to feed the power in better. i had a heavy right foot when i bought mine. pair of front tyres destroyed in 5k miles soon made me drive it properly

My experience of wheel hop has been in ahem - well used cars. :)

Newer vehicles don't seem to suffer. It's down to wear and tolerances in the suspension components, typically bushes and dampers.

This isn't true, watch some of tiffs videos of fifth gear, he mention axle tramp quite a lot and he's driving brand new models

Goodyear Eagle F1 GSD3 - Fabulous tyres.

How are your console bushes?

They were brand new Solid cupra ones about 2 years ago.. Unfortunately didn't get onto the ramps as planned this weekend :(

Nah, I'm the greatest driver in the world (*cough), couldn't possibly be that. :D Plus it only does it sometimes, when I intend to launch hard.

Standard Conti's that came on it - factory fitted pair dead by 4.5k (only 2k of which was me), and second pair lasted 5k also.. So I changed brand and doubled the life.

Michelin pilot :)

Driving? More like annihilating! Fun to watch... unless you buy that particular demonstrator.

Whatever you want to call it and whenever we feel it happens, it's more likely, the older the car and the more.... aggressive the take-off/driver.

J.

Im also running on goodyear eagle f1's. Dont get the problem with steel wheels and crappy tyres mind... I just asumed its the tyres fighting for grip really since these tyres are brilliant in the dry.

Mine done it when I first bought it, but not any more. I must have done something along the way that reduces it.
