  • I get no thrills from going fast at all. Not that I have a problem with those that do as I've done 160(ish) myself. For me it's about the acceleration or the g you pull through the corners.

Speed is contextual... it is far less dangerous to drive at 140 on a deserted, well-surfaced motorway at 3am than it is to do 70 past a school at 3pm... Speed doesn't kill. What does is the person be

  • I don't see any issue with driving at high speed when it is safe and appropriate to do so. I don't however trust everybody to judge when that time is.

I think the problem is, driving at high speed when others around you aren't doing the same sort of speed is dangerous.

Slightly different on the autobahn as people don't think twice about doing 100mph+.

Ever since the discussion about how damn dangerous, immoral, illegal & wreck less someone was for flooring their car from 50-70mph on a motorway iv just stayed away for any such talk on here now. Sad really but it's easier than arguing.

How's it dangerous to accelerate hard from 50-70? Whenever I've joined the M3 from the M25. there's a 50 limit with average speed cameras, and as soon as I pass the last camera, my foot goes to the floor. I really don't see anything dangerous about it...

I've maxed out my fabia on the M3 once or twice (obviously it can only do 70  ), I'm just careful as to when I do it. When I'm driving in built up areas with a 30 limit, I generally stick to 30. Am I dangerous?

OK, so then why do some people feel the need to have a go when someone posts a GPS shot of speed being done, on a clearly empty dry delimited autobahn?! Just sad trolling in my eyes.

In fact I'm going to go see if I can find footage from my DR400G of said 135mph....

I find when driving at the UK maximum on a two or three lane road the danger comes from the idiot who catches the truck up doing 56mph in their lane and without using there mirror they just flash the indicator on and pull out in front of you, do people not look as far ahead as possible? Or use mirrors when changing lane?

That was pretty much the exact situation. As you say Jason, its basically trolling, sadly though not a form of trolling thats often dealt with.

Stick a photo up, just make sure the flame suit is on lol

Generally I don't speed as my licence is worth to much to me. But I NEVER speed in built up areas. In-fact, if I had been doing greater than 30mph tonight I probably would have collected a lady near Finsbury Park who stepped out in front of me, in the pouring rain!

I find those that drive quickly and tailgate to be the most offensive. Also those who undertake/switch lanes quickly at speed! Yes, we can all do it, but it is other people who are not expecting it that are going to cause the accident! Done plenty of track day driving experience thingies at above 100mph, but that's the right venue for it!

I also, don't see the point in travelling in 3 figure speeds on a motorway. It will rarely see you arrive that much earlier - unless I guess it is the dead of night and the road is empty!

High speed isn't dangerous in the right place, it's the stationary bit, the sudden stationary bit, that is usually damaging.

Therefore it's best to keep moving.

I've been out with the police a couple of times on my bike (to get my riding assessed, not for being bad before I get flamed, but to become a better rider as the groups I was with had a good relationship with the local plods on one and the other was a Bikesafe course) and the unofficial comment from the copper as we got to the bikes was, 30, 40 & 50s, stick to it, out of town just don't be stupid. On one run I was leading and we were doing a good speed and passing several cars (who probably thought the copper was chasing us down) we stopped for a break and had a debrief which was no issues. The next run the other guy led and we probably didn't go any faster but even to me he was being a prat, the copper ripped him up for it at the next stop.

Moral is (or at least to me) that speed, despite what the press says, is not purely evil. When combined with idiotic behaviour, bad weather, poor roads, or unknown other drivers is very different to a more controlled environment and experience. A quiet and near straight Autobahn is very different to an A road where no one is expecting people to go into three figures.

Totally agree.

Agreed! Also can't say I see the fascination of going quickly either. We maxed my 330 down the autobahns (photos somewhere too for the trolls), but it's not exactly much fun - it's just going in a straight line quickly. We had much more fun driving at <40mph down alps instead!

At the risk of getting my post removed, I will say one thing.

There is always going to be somebody who thinks their whiter than white and look down on anybody who they disagree with.

Once this has been done, a small group of their online buddies will jump on the bandwagon and go in for the kill.

It can be about any subject.

I once said I had a bit of a 50 to 70 race out of roadworks with a golf GTI and all got was sh11te!!

It was perfectly legal but because I foolishly said "race" I was torn to bits.

In my eyes do what you want but word it carefully so not to give the nobs any ammo.

Say autobahn instead of M62!!

I guess when it comes to official delimited autobahns, its a novelty for us to have this legal ability, and the cars to be able to do it. Hell, I didn't drive 3000 miles over the past 10 days to stick to normal speeds if I was allowed to max out. :D

That's why we all came back from Czech via the Nurburgring! ;)

Stelvio pass for us, among other roads. :D Beautiful national park too

The buggers made me unplug it and take it out the mount! :(

I must admit now I am maturing (nearly 40) I really like trying to drive without braking! Sounds shocking but it really is about flowing and finding the gaps in the traffic and above all being smooth, might be why the brake pads on my car have done over 50K miles.

I`m also in agreement that acceleration or cornering is far more fun than top speed. All the chavs ask what the top speed of my car is, I dont know, i`v never tried to go flat out because its a bit boring tbh. Much more fun setting up the cones in the yard and seeing how quick I can lap them.

And quite correctly, as they state in their rules/T & C's that you aren't allowed to video/record your laps now.

And my only comment to speed is to consider your own ACTUAL capabilities and not what you think they are, because from experience of picking up the pieces is that the former is often massively less than the latter!
