**MONTE OWNERS** Headlight upgrades? What have you done?

Featured Replies

Morning folks - sorry if this has been covered before....

I have a set of H7 Phillips Xtreme's (100% more light) ready to go in (once it arrives!!!), but what I really want to know is.... Has anyone changed the light units for the normal 'twin H7' units - same as the ones found in the lower spec models??

The more I read about the Monte's poor lights the more I feel inclined to swap them over....

My mother-in-law has a 60plate elegance with twin H7 bulbs and they are excellent, even with the OEM bulbs!

Your thoughts/suggestions are very welcome!

Steve :)

I haven't done a great deal of night driving (more early mornings), but with reduction in daylight, it's needing headlights on for the nursery run. They seem fine so far, but I may eat my words soon enough...

Is it the fact they're the projector type that makes them worse than standard?

Have you tried elevating the headlight ? This was the issue with my fabia and I changed to Philips extreme then was fine

I've got the monte blackpack lights in my vRS...I thought they were too low down, but dealer checked then against MOT rig and said they were spot on.

I'm going to put some Nightbreakers in at some point though.

You need to raise them up, honest its a vast improvement

Did mine put night breakers in a bit better then raised them up a bit vast improvement ...

There you go homers dad confirms it lol

I've got some HID units I might put in my vRS, I know that they are technically illegal, but I had them on my previous car and never had an issue !

Technically illegal ;) you having a laugh lol

I've gone for 6000K HIDs for when my Monte arrives. I don't plan to own the car when it comes to have an MOT so I don't see it being a problem.

I dont have major issue with lighting in my monte, seems better then previous cars ive owned. But i guess it depends what you are used too

On coming cars may have a problem?

If the police stop you they can still refer you to a mot station to have the car checked

He police will defo start pulling people over, it's so easy to tell the difference

It is an offence under the road traffic act 1988 (UK) to supply, fit or use vehicle parts which are not legal. Aftermarket HIDs shoved into a halogen projector lens would come into this category. Unless the 'entire' headlight unit has been assessed and e-marked it won't be legal -only new cars from the manufacturer with factory fitted xenons will have this. The potential lack of self-levelling and headlight wash system will also be a problem.

Here is the link setting the Dept for Transports view on the issue:

http://assets.dft.gov.uk/publications/dft-information-sheets/aftermarket-hid-headlamps.pdf

As to how this would be enforced and prosecuted is anyones guess but I suspect the police could give you a fine and ?points for dazzling other road users.

If an accident was caused by a driver being dazzled by an illegal HID conversion I think there might be a few legal problems for that person not to mention your insurance company leaving you high and dry.

All just my thoughts tho.

Just fitted Philips extreme h7. Went for a drive and almost crashed. Yes they are brighter, but the light pattern has a complete cut off. It's like you need to be able to raise the beam (and yes my adjustment switch is in the right position). Will be putting back in supplied h7s ASAP. On a more positive note, on main beam they are fantastic.

Running Nightbreakers in our Elegance; noticeably better than the standard factory Osrams, although the overall lighting effect in dipped beam is still a little gloomier than I would like.

Also under the impression that a change in bulbs can effect the angle of the lighting, so you may find that a lighting adjustment may fix the issue.

TP

I reckon if I raised the beam slightly on my vRS they would be better. They don't seem deep enough if that makes sense. Easy enough to live with and driven with much worse in the past. Cabstar has two candles in comparison

You need to adjust your headlights manually to see an improvement with the new bulbs.

They are perfect ive had them for three months as soon as you change to these you notice a difference but then 2bh after a while you get used to them and they seem dim again, you must have fitted them wonkey or something, lols or brought some dodgy ones from ebay :/

I agree that the dipped beam pattern cut off on the road with the projector lights is too pronounced. However, the Philips Extreme are a big improvement because you get far more light. You do need to set the beam higher, but not so high that it dazzles on coming vehicles. For more discussion on this see 'Headlight range' started by Gumby on 10 Sept 2012.

No problem at all with my Monte headlights..and the fogs are the best I've ever experienced, giving much wider and brighter light than on any other car Ive had including my 3 previous vRS Octy's!

remember folks when you have replaced your bulbs from oem your warranty is voided on headlamp if issues araise from electrcal fault in headlamp
