Apple IOS6 Maps - What a joke

Featured Replies

Clearly not maps.

The reason they didn't stick with Google is essentially because Apple requested that they could have the turn by turn directions and Google said no, so Apple went and created their own. Yes at the moment there are teething problems, but what many people seem to have forgotten is just how long Google have spent refining their maps. It's the problem with it being new, and also with the society we're in now where we naturally expect something new to just work. Sadly, with the mapping and such, it isn't always the case. As Chronicbint said, when finished I reckon they'll be onto a winner. I tried it out today in it's current state, and it's definitely a lot better than other navs I've used, but obviously it's going to need refining :)

exactly, Google have been refining/improving their map app since they bought it like 8 years ago

Clearly not maps.

Yet :D

Apple tried to re-invent the wheel, and failed, epically. They can't blame the data-provider either, and the provider could easily have provided turn-by-turn navigation as they definately know a thing or three about navigation. ;)

You can't honestly stand up and say that the maps app was thoroughly tested before release. I rekon that it'll be rebadged as "Maps Beta" (like Siri was) and there'll be some back-peddling.

Tomtom offered to put one of their development teams on-site at Apple. Apple declined. According to 'Tomtom insiders' one of the rookie mistakes Apple made was to assume the earth is a perfect sphere.

Live street view free does work. If you tap on the map, which now uses Apple Maps, it will show google street view. Not only that when you spin the iPad around it will rotate the photo like in panorama view on the iPhone. Works fine for me. both on the iPad and iPhone 5.

Apple wanted turn by turn directions from Google like they had on Android.

Google refused.

For Apple this was the deal breaker.

Bye Bye Google.

Hello TomTom.

Hello the 'mess' we are in.

For me I only used Google maps to locate roads and accident scenes, which surprisingly weren't marked on Google Maps

I then used google street view. Live street view works for me. Actually it is better than google street view on previous iOS versions.

I also like the terrain view in Maps, which isn't on the previous Google Maps. (swipe 2 fingers up from the bottom of the screen)

I have never used Google Maps to find and get directions for local businesses, or for travel. I have Tom Tom, Co-Pilot, Navigon, Skoda Columbus, etc and Tube Deluxe for that, which is soooooo much better than Google Maps.

So overall I disagree that Apple have dropped a clanger on Maps. It is very impressive.

So I am happy with Maps.

apologies, double posted! :)

what!!!?? When a company charges a massive -massive- premium for a product, restricts it's use, bars you from using competitors, then releases a woefully sub standard version of a vital common/market imbeded feature that is barely usable - ''society'' has ever right to raise hell over it. When something is NEW, and is very very EXPENSIVE then too right it should WORK! You don't buy a Mercedes, find the radio doesn't work and go ''well, that'll teach me for buying a new car''.

Secondly, it isn't new. As well as Google, Nokia and Microsoft, have both released solid mapping software alternatives, as have copilot, tomtom, garmin, Igo, etc...these have been around for a decade+ and have NOT been released on massively inflated premium products then failed to deliver. Mapping software is not new, it is not something innovative or magical that has been just created and needs time to be refined. The simple fact is Apple got arrogant knowing that their user base/fan base is so blinded by the logo (and lack of common sense...) that they could get away with such a massively lackluster half assed software release. They are the richest company in the world, remember?

And finally...what 'other navs' have you used that are 'definitely worse' then Apple's maps? How many other Navs miss out half the towns, villages, land marks then cover the other half in cloud and then finally put Berlin on the North Pole!?

Goblin 100% on the money th apple maps will surpass the google maps( eventually :) )

This post is the -word perfect- dictionary definition of what has made Apple the most powerful company today. Daft, senseless people following a product that swims against every drop of purchasing common sense. You have spent £500+ on a product in the hope that it will ''eventually'' catch up to its cheaper, better featured rivals.... WHY WOULD YOU DO THAT!? It is not logic, or sensible, or intelligent in any way shape or form....there is no other product out there which you would do this to...so why do it over a -shinier- mobile phone!?

As you can imagine I have an Android phone, however I never had anything against Apple, on the contrary...I do believe they truly launched the (modern) smart phone that we all know & love. What really really grates me is the fact they have released a product 6 months after the competition.....which does less, looks shinier, is gimped over a massively vital price of software then slapped a huge price tag on it and yet people are still defending it!!?? WWWHHHHYYY?

Because its a democracy :D and money isn't a issue :D

Nokia provides FREE maps, free update on them and turn by turn voice navigation, they use GPS, so no data usage on the go. Fantastic 3D and accuracy is 100%. I've been using my Nokia as Sat Nav for the last 4 years and never failed me. The accuracy is about 20 feet, brilliant.

You may be too young to remember that when google first did maps they were terrible, in fact they weren't a very good search engine either. They have improved over many years, apple will do the same. As for what other navs are worse? NOKIA are, that may have improved over the last two years but when I had my Nokia E71 a couple of years ago the nav didn't recognise quite a few post codes plus it would direct you to the wrong street and all this was charged at about £3 for 30 days use. And you call apple a rip off! HA!

Am old enough to remember that and when AutoRoute would only navigate to a town centre.

However, TomTom (who supplied the data to Apple) offered to send a developer along with the data to help Apple understand what they'd bought. Sadly, the usual Apple arrogance dictated that they "knew what they were doing" and didn't need any help. In all honesty I think I would have lept at the chance to have a developer from the originator of, not only the data, but the "name" synonimous with SatNav. A little less Apple Arrogance, a little more humble pie. and they'd have had it right, straight out the box.

What they could have done was to have Apple maps as a public beta for a year to find out what problems they'd have, they knew far enough in advance that the licence from Google was not going to be renewed. A public beta, running alongside the Google maps, not a hard thing to have done, just contrary to iThinking where everything has to be an iSecret.

Pitty the phones are crap though. I fell for the N97 coming home from York once and I ended up in Lincoln. Dunno if they are better phones these days, I'm not prepared to try again to find out. Nokia dropped the ball a while back can't see them scoring for a while.

Is there a way of using google maps if you do use iOS6?

Because its a democracy :D and money isn't a issue :D

Fair comment! They also force Samsung, Nokia and co to up their game which benefits everyone else! That is if Apple don't sue them all into existence! :(

And yes, if you Google it (on my mobile ATM) there is a way of creating an icon which takes you to Google maps mobile version I hear! :)

Just go to maps.google.com in safari and save it to your homepage. It's not as nice of a UI as the old native maps app. But exactly the same data (no street view though).

When something is NEW, and is very very EXPENSIVE then too right it should WORK!
I know, Apple charged a massive £0.00 for iOS6 outrageous :-)
When a company charges a massive -massive- premium for a product
The estimated cost of making an iPhone 5 is about $200 (source http://www.techspot.com/news/50224-16gb-iphone-5-has-bill-of-materials-of-199-207-after-manufacturing.html) in the US Apple charge $199 for the phone then you add your contract on to that. In UK money the cost is about £125 before VAT and £150 after. This is roughly what Vodafone will charge for the phone with a £33/month contract so not much difference. These costs are just to make the hardware and do not include any software licensing or development. Most things you buy have a markup, found this on an Honest John forum
I used to work for a car manufacturer, and the parts and build cost is approx 50% of the pre-tax list price.

Don?t forget that the manufacturer is a separate company, who then sell the car to the country sales organisation, who then sell to the dealer, who then sell to you. So, roughly (and ideally) the manufacturer makes 20-30%, the importer 10-20% and the dealer 10% (all gross margins). Of course all those margins get squashed by discounts.

I do agree that there are features of an iPhone 5 and an iPad 3 that a large majority of UK users will never get to use, the main 1 being LTE or 4G and this makes no sense. In theory the only service provider in the UK to buy a contract with is EE and then only if you will only use your device in 1 of about 22 towns or cities in the country. But is this a single manufacturers fault (VHS/Betamax) or the regulators for the way they have sold bandwidth for the services to run on?

It was also a marketing mistake to big up a software feature that has huge flaws, but there are not many companies releasing software who have never made that mistake before.

Just as we all chose to buy Skoda because the features and price were right for us some people choose to buy phones with different features and prices. There is no right or wrong just a choice for each individual. Vive la différence as some of our friends from overseas would say
