rear tyre still has 7+mm threads, but one has a cut

Featured Replies

Hi all,

It's me again... Tonight I hit the kerb when cornering (2nd gear, around 12-15mph). There is a small scratch at the edge of the Rear Right wheel rim and a cut into the tyre.

Ironically I just did the tyre thread check and four wheel alignment... Seems need to replace the tyre and do another tracking...

My question is: since both rear tyres still have around 7mm+ threads left (after around 3,600 miles), can I just replace the damaged one with the same type of new tyre?

Thanks.

Just took a photo of the impact area (highlighted with the red box)

Struggling to see any cut in the tyre there. Are you sure it isn't just the rim protector that is damaged? In which case it will be fine as this is what they are designed for.

I have a right chunk out of mine for last 12k after dropping into a broken road drain and have had no problems. This includes a trip to Germany this year and a couple of laps of the ring!

If it is damaged on the actual tyre though and does need replacing you will only need to replace one. After having 2punctures at different times now I have different tread depths on all 4 corners, and now soon need 3 new tyres at £150 each!

The tyre is definitely damaged. The cut locates at the abottom of the red box. There is no bulge so the inner layer is not damaged for now.

I found the 17" 225/45 dunlop tyre is 105 pounds on the blackcircles website. Slightly cheaper at camskill, but their fitting centre is too far from my place!

BTW, I don't think I have any rim protectors.

Unless this is standard on Superbs?

Should be ok to replace the one tyre with the same brand/design as long as the remaining tyre on the same axle is only a few thousand miles old and has plenty tread left. (axle is the term im using for same opposite hubs)

Tracking should also be checked, you might even get away with a check.

Different tyres, tread depth left and right isnt a great idea, i certainly wouldnt drive a car with more than 2 different tyres on, meaning 2 at front the same and 2 at back the same but no more.

Thanks! I wouldn't want to drive a car with different brands of wheels either.

BTW, do you mean when I get the tyre changed, I may even ask them to check the camber and toe alignment of this rear right tyre, for FREE?

Or this has to be done on all four wheels? I've only got a warranty four wheel alignment done less than two weeks ago...

If you explain to them what has happened they might check your alignment as a goodwill gesture as long as you go back to the place who originally did the tyres and alignment

Abarth is correct. You can just replace the one tyre and hopefully they'll check the alignment for free (normally its only adjustments that they charge for)

Shopping around online today, my tyres are Dunlop Sports SP FastResponse 225/45 R17 94W

Funny enough, I found the 94Y type of the Dunlop Sports SP FastResponse 225/45 R17 is cheaper than my 94W

I understand 94Y should be better than 94W as it can go faster (maybe better rubber)? Maybe because it will wear faster hence need to be changed earlier?

Shall I go for the 94W just to keep all the tyres identical?

BTW, it seems to be worse than I thought...

The rim has some damage, additional weight might be needed during wheel balancing...

Looking at the damage: Yes, you need a new tyre. And I should keep the new tire as identical as possible to the other tires. So go for the 94W, especially since the price difference is only 1.5 pound..

Agreed, that looks like you need a new one to me.

Thanks to all of you. New tyre changed yesterday, all incl. 105.59GBP - 2% quidco cashback and 420 Tesco club points.

The garage polished the dent on the rim briefly and checked the suspension. They said no visible problems. However, they can do front wheel alignment only, hence cannot check the camber alignment of my rear tyres.

The car is running perfectly straight at the moment. Will check threads every 1,000 miles hope it will wear evenly.
