Excellent!

I had the CTR before the VRS. Loved it's looks, loved the engine a real driver focused car but it rattled more than the fabia (you could tell it was bolted together in the uk) had crap paint and awful suspension. I think performance wise there isn't much in it IMO but the fabia just wins it for me as a great all rounder for every day use couple in the tax and economy then it's a win win for me apart from the looks of course still think it's one good looking hatch.

Plenty of Fabia's have done the same, doesn't take a hard look on here to find pics ;)

Ahh yes the IBMA :giggle:

Which is your favourite turtle?

Apologies, the green one :)

Yes usually crashed by Brisky members!

Yep it says nothing so why bother?.

On the other hand the tsi is a deeply flawed unit

Rich, it so flawed that it won Engine of the Year award AGAIN in its category and came second OVERALL

Forgive me but "Deeply flawed unit" my ar$e!

We do bang on about oil issues here, but have we got any actual statistics of how many 1.4TSi units have problems with oil percentage wise?

They're just the one's we know about.

Does winning engine of the year actually mean anything in this respect though? As far as I know these awards are given on a subjective basis by a panel of judges; reliability, or faults, or customer satisfaction are not taken into account whatsover.

There are many posts on here from people having problems with the 1.4Tsi unit, particularly with the one in the VRS and thats just the people who have bothered to post on this forum. It would appear that a percentage of these engines have problems and that VAG don't really have a credible answer or solution. Actually, I suspect they do know but aren't willing to own up to what has gone wrong since the associated recall would cost them a lot of money.

Hence me asking question about hard facts - what is the precentage of the total sold 1.4 TSi units which had warranty repair raised for oil consumption issues?

There is somebody for SUK here, maybe willing to help?

This engine has been around for a while and so far it won 4 Engine of the Year awards, surely, if it was falling apart en masse somebody would notice from the "panel of judges" that despite all the "paper" performance it is just rubish?

I seem to remeber a figure of 3mil of 1.4TSi units sold so far so an actual number of faulty units is BOUND to be high in absolute numbers for obvious reasons but perhaps really insignificant percentage wise? As I do not have a reliable source of hard figures I cannot say for sure. But I am making inquiries ;).

If you think the percentage is high on here with the Vrs you should check out scn. The percentage is far higher for the cupras and bocanegras.

"Hey, you know what I came up today?"

"No..."

"Well I thought that the TSI is a deeply flawed unit..."

"Do you mean the engine that is found in hundreds of thousands of vehicles today (1.2, 1.4, Polos, Golfs, Tiguans, Sciroccos, Fabias, Octavias, Ibizas etc. etc.) and is considered one of the most successful ones of VAG group by all means of comparison?"

"Yes... But you know there are like 10 posts of oil consumption problems on briskoda!"

^^ Aye, Aye C'ptain!

I just fired up some e-mails to some friends who should be able to help me to get to the bottom of this...

I have a gut feeling that the problems are caused by the nature of this powerplant, where under no circumstances can it be treated gently. Also, potential shortcomings in factory running-in procedures.

I can tell you the main issue and that's crankcase pressure. It just blows oil out the engine

you must be joking, that is the simplest of things to sort out, not even thought of that!

I wonder where the Glasses car guide has the "expencive engine problems" from? Are these only speculations because the engine is discontinued, or are there reliable references to back this up?

"Oil Thread transformation ALERT!!!

Evacuate in 10,9,8...."

We'll that was the only reason mine used oil.

I thought we were discussing the 1.4Tsi in the state of tune found in the VRS? As pointed out by Jabozuma it would be interesting to know the percentage of units with oil consumption problems. However, I doubt we will ever know the true scale of the problem for some time. Look how long it took VAG/SUK to admit to a problem with PD170 engines and fit new injectors for free

...but back on topic I was blown into the weeds by a CTR the other day, it went round corners like an F1 car compared to my jelly-like MkI.

^^ Another argument to support a thesis that not the machine but the driver matters. Put LH behinfd the wheel of Kia Rio and any of us in their Fabias vRS next to each other on the track and I bet you we will be inhaling Kia's exhaust gases all day long :)

Too true. Lots of people out there get into their VRS, RS, ST, Type-R, Sport....etc and think they are driving gods. After 20 years of driving cars and riding motorcycles I'm well aware of my capabilities or lack thereof...

Also, people forget, that te most of the performance comes from the knowledge of the track (local roads) and being one with the car...

Hence Formula 1 drivers go off while trying to find the limits of their cars on in particular conditions on particular tracks...

There is brillint example here locally, a round about betwenn two fast streches of dual carriageway. the inside kerb of the island has chunks of alloy embeded in it courtesy of boy racrs thinking they can striaght line it lol.

Ypu an take it at 70mph but you need to do 3 steering extremely precise wheel movements in few hundreths of a second or your alloys are biting the kerb or worse. Love this part of the road as it always makes my passangers scream in terror lol ;)

Off on another tangent but knowledge of a road and driver experience can count for quite a bit. There's a particularly noisy Civic Type-R owned by a local spoilt kid who's only 20 so my brother's age. A few weeks ago I happened to be taking my parents Swift for a spin after it's service. The night was dry and as I was heading towards a roundabout I heard him coming from the left and heading straight down back towards the town. As usual he was giving it some, or at least it sounded as if he was. Once he saw I'd caught up he booted it. While he was pulling away on the straights when it came to bends, roundabouts and potholes I was taking better lines and most of the time was on his bumper. Judging by his acceleration it was no better than my vRS, it's just a shame I wasn't driving it then he would have had a fright. You could argue he wasn't trying but never in a million years should a 1.5 Swift be keeping with a Type-R. It really surprised me how good it was*

*all within limits of course
