Looking to Buy MK2 vRS - What's it Like?

Featured Replies

so my search for a MK2 vRS continues...

Currently looking for:

- Metallic Blue mk2 2.0L vRS

- Manual

- Petrol

- Up to 70k miles

- Hatchback

Really struggling to find any decent models where I'm located. All of the well priced one's are too far up north! I've missed out on 2 really good buys however, because I couldn't get there in time before they sold, so hopefully something will turn up soon.

Did anyone else find these difficult to find? Autotrader returns about 4-5 results, pistonheads 0! and parkers about 3-4.

Be patient. Hold on for what you want. It will be worth it! Good luck!

(Edit: Just noticed, my 500th post!!)

I've gone from a Smelly Diesel to a petrol, 11 plate Tsi but the Proper ones have the DSG gearbox, just like mine and are Yellow An Utter Dream The End

  • Mine was remapped anyway, but the ecu standard map is tuned to use 98, ( as it says on the petrol cap ) , if they introduced a lower Octane of diesel to use in your " vRS " Diesel would you use that J

  • I've written a bunch of stuff about my octavia on my blog on pistonheads, but to answer your questions: Petrol consumption - averaging 33ish overall. you can get 37-8 easily on a run. Common faults

When I got mine last year there was 1 in the UK that was manual and a face life with the extras I wanted. I live up in staffordshire and travelled to Maidstone Kent to get it was a 450 mile round trip and a long day out but well worth it.

Ive just bought a vrs Tfsi - 60k on an 06 plate for 6k....

Very happy with it, cant fault it really - get around 32-33 mpg, handles well and is very comfortable.....

I too have been looking at the petrol vRS, all be it the facelift model. So the claimed combined mpg is pretty unrealistic? Thats not great, i'm coming from a 30mpg car that i've owned for the last 5 years, so was looking for a bit more :( might even have to venture into looking at dervs..

Good luck in your search wardy:D and apologies for the slight hijack..

I've done 84k miles now in my 2010 vRS tsi, average is 33mpg. Drive like a saint and you'll get 37-38.

when i was looking, the more you looked for certain specs the worse it was to find the right car.....

In the end i got one with a jumbo armrest and parcking sensors - both vital IMHO... Sat nav and xenons would of been nice but rarely i saw one that had them all. I must say standard light are pretty good, ive come from a honda nad a seat which were both terrible....

Yeh I somewhat agree with what you're saying, but when you're looking to spend a large sum of money, you should be picky.

Agree about the parking sensors and they would be top of the list, with the xenons & cruise being a bonus. If I wasn't looking for a blue one or lived up north I would probably have one by now!

I mangaged 28/29 mpg on mine but it was remapped and I drove it quite hard. Better than the R, only get about 25mpg!

I could live with 33mpg but if i got 25mpg id be in tears. Wouldnt mind the performance of the R though.

To the OP is MPG a big concern? If it is then just get a diesel VRS. Granted the pertol is nicer but a diesle VRS isnt far off and i dont think its possible to get less than 40mpg out of it. I cant anyway and my daily commute at the moment is probably the worst case scenario for mpg i.e 2 miles each way from a cold start each time.

I'm sure you'd be able to reto-fit cruise and sensors pretty easily. Buy the best car you can and get these fitted afterwards?

Strangely it costs the same to fill up and I get similar miles between fill ups so go figure that. The R isn't much different to a remapped vRS tsi performance wise. The R probably has a bit more power to weight but the remapped vRS has much more torque to weight hence in gear acceleration is better. The R puts it down better though as you would expect.

I need to retro fit cruise to mine. Not as expensive as you would think at a main dealer.

These are the one's that are in my search criteria at the moment...

Unfortunately none of them have any extras like Cruise Control, Xenons or Parking Sensors.. :(

I think the car in the last 2 (er, 2 dealers selling the same car!) is a bit pricey. I bought my (silver) 57-reg with 54k miles in February, same screen price as this. This has a higher mileage, less equipment than mine (it has cruise), and it's now 9 months later. Apart from one minor scuff and not having had its cambelt done, it was essentially in new condition.

Not really too concerned about it.

Commute is 30-40 mins each way and overall will be covering around ~10k a year. I'm driving a 02 1.9TDI Passat at the moment and that gets me about 46-50mpg on current commute.

More looking for the performance upgrade of the vRS compared the above. Hopefully this should be pretty significant?

I'm pretty convinced that if I wasn't looking specifically for a Metallic Blue, I'd have a high spec one already!

To be honest a point will probably come when you have to drop the priority of colour in your priority list. When I bought my first vRS I went for specification first, colour was secondary. Ended up with Black Magic which looked oh so great when clean, but not so when dirty. Last year when I was buying new I obviously had my choice of colours, but when I'm buying second hand the specification needs to come first.

I've just bought a 2009 vrs tdi limited edition and I love it. I know you're after a petrol, but they corner brilliantly, the 6 speed box is very smooth and seems well spaced out, the seats are supportive and comfortable and offer a good range of adjustability.

Honestly, they really are cracking cars and they're not a soul-less and emotionless drive as a lot of other new cars.

Do it!!

And mine is NOT for sale :giggle:

I've had mine since new in 2007 and have done 64k so far

Petrol consumption - claims 36mpg... Realistic? How much do you get on average?

Long term average is 34mpg at the moment. In the summer I can get 37mpg without too much trouble cruising to work in a 60mph limit.

Winter temperatures do hit the mpg and 32 is more normal then. Drive it like you stole it and you'll be down to 22mpg before you know it.

Town driving can be thirsty too.

Common faults - anything to look out for on this model?

There are two petrol engines in the Mk2 the TFSI and the TSI. Both seem to be pretty reliable average.

There is an ABS fault common to the range (and much of VAG, BMW) which can cost a bit but not as much as it used to.

Check the forums for other faults. Compared to other cars they're pretty reliable. Touch wood, I've had no big faults in nearly 6 years.

Gearbox - what's this 6 speed manual like to use? Smooth? What's the low/mid range power like?

I like it. Many fit short shifters from the TT. Low range power is very good due to the turbo. It was one of the things that sold the car to me. after coming from a diesel I wasn't sure I'd like a low torque petrol. But I was very surprised. The TFSI (mine) is very tractable and flexible across the rev range. When warm it'll happily pull away from 30mpg in 6th.

Steering - how good is the steering?

I like it. TBH I prefer it to the wife's BMW which feels artificially heavy.

Seating - are the bucket sports seats comfortable?

Not the best point of the car. I don't have a big problem with the deats but they're a long way from the best I've ever sat in.

Grip/Traction - how's the cornering and traction.. does it stick well?

I'm not a racer but it seems fine to me. It's not a sports car really, a bit fat and heavy. More of a cheap GT.

Essential extras - anything I should look out for? Hoping for one with xenons,

I like CC, wish I'd got Maxidot, would have got leather (wasn't an option). Will probably have 18" alloys on everything you look at but I think the ride would probably be better on 17".

Make sure the timing belt has been done if it's a TFSI and over 4yr old. Check the sills on pre-FL cars. The stone chip paint isn't high enough and rust gets started there.

It's one of the best cars you can buy for the money they demand. Fast, practical, not too thirsty and a bit of a sleeper. Plod tends to leave you alone. Also the insurance is a bit cheaper than the equivalent GTI or A3.

Prices for petrol VRSs have taken a tumble which is good for you since you should be able to find a bargain.

If you're concerned about mpg , get a cr diesel. They still do 8.5 to 60 and a brilliant to drive. It's very smooth in power delivery and doesnt drive like a regular diesel, it can rev to 6000! It also sounds pretty nice for a derv when its beinf worked. A remap will take you to 200 easily.

Meant to say 200bhp haha.

Great post, thanks for that mate. I've also noticed the prices slowly reducing in the last few months, as you've stated above.

Not sure where all the diesel speculation has come from! 100% looking for a petrol, especially when I'm driving a VAG engine with 175k on the clock :)
