TMC Tuning Box

Recommended Posts

Hi all

Just wondering how good these are?

http://www.tmcmotorsport.com/CarProducts.aspx

Would they void warranty on the vehicle?

How much difference does it make to insurance normally?

Has anybody used them, what performance gains did they get, and what difference did it make to fuel economy?

Is there any better options

Cheers

Yes but remove before you take it for work

Cost me extra £30

Havent rr'd it but feels much better especially past 4000rpm and no difference in mpg

Is there any better options

Yes APR, especially with cruise control stalk as you can turn map off

I have driven a car with TMC, and I must say, it transforms the performance...

two on here have been RR'd, one at approc 207 bhp, the other at approx 218 bhp (If I remember correctly) both on setting 7 , the latter with a CAI...

they have a good reputation, I would certainly consider one when my warrenty is up! :)

Think this option is defo out the window now, just checked on comparison website I found some insurance quote on.

Original quotes cheapest = £350

Quotes with ECU mod 11%- 25% increase cheapest = £1070

Oh well was just an idea thought it was a good deal for a bit of extra power but obviously now way I could justify spending that much extra on insurance just for a bit of extra power. :(

Having driven a mk2 on setting 8 for several hundred miles, it definitely flies ;)

This was using a mixture of 100, 101 and 102 RON fuel...whichever the highest was available at the time :)

No error lights or misfires at all. Not even any stored in the ECU as we scanned it.

Tried one on mine. At setting 6 & 7 the engine warning light kept coming on under hard acceleration with the car going into limp mode a couple of times. Lost confidence in it because of that and didn't see the point of keeping winding it down and down when I was running 97/98 ron fuel.

Dont let the comparison website put you off.

I have my car insured with everyone of my modifications, and there are alot of mods, for less than what the cheapest quote for a standard vRS was from the compare the market website.

YOu just need to go to a focused Insurer. Ive used Adrian flux, Greenlight, Sky insurance etc all have been good.

I have just moved away from Admiral who were happy with the car mildly modified with stock turbo etc, but with my current setupo they refused to offer a quotation, so Im currently with Prestige and they have been awesome so far. And they were cheaper with all my new mods than what Admiral quoted my renewal for my old less modified setup

As for the T<MC, im not a fan, and whilst there are a few guys running them on here now, theres also a few guys who have since swapped to a remap becuase they werent happy with the power delivery etc.

If you were to buy one though, you can be 99% guaranteed to be able to sell it on here with no issues as there is a lot of interest from people who dont want to declare mods or lose warranty etc, so its not to bad an investment in that sense

and what softscoop did included sustained high speed runs on the autobahns, an airfield day, and 4 laps of the nurburgring! granted it was running 100-102 RON fuel on setting 8 , but it ran faultlessly, as he said, we scanned it and all was perfect.. the car in question was running NGK 8's incidentally.

It brings the car to life.

I've had mines in my car on 7 for roughly a year now. No real issues that aren't out of ordinary for these cars. Just a few misfires here and there.

You'll get a slight increase in fuel economy if you dont boot it everywhere, but its hard not too when you feel how much more alive the car is.

It, combined with a good induction kit will give you a grin from ear to ear. It's amazing how much it changes the car.

There are no real downsides to be honest, installation is quick and it only added £30 to my premium ( 22 yo 2 years driving exp )

Theres a bit about it in my build thread if you want to have a look. I'll answer any questions you might have about it!

The only thing is that it's not as "good" as a proper remap to the ECU. The power delivery is a bit clunky when going from a standing start and you wont get full "stage 1" figures like you would from a re-map. A few Bhp's and torques less, but you're saving £150 so its all Pro's and Con's..

couldn't of said it better myself!

Had my TMC in for a good while now and recently combined with a K&N induction kit this thing really does fly now.

Power delivery wise, I've had no issues apart from the gear changes being a little harsher.

Insurance all told, put mine up £120 with admiral. (22, 3ncb)

Had one issue where I suspect a connector on the TMC came loose preventing the engine from running but has been fine since.

I'd buy a remap if I could afford it but for the price of the TMC it can't be beaten.

I tried a couple of specialists lastnight and they still quoted £962 and £647. Adirian Flux and Chris Knott Insuance.

Compared to the £350 on comparison sites for stock just cant justify the extra £299 for the unit then another £300 a year on insurance just for the sake of around 30bhp extra. :(

I dont get why its making such a difference I am 31 been driving for 13yrs, 5yrs no claims bonus. I do want my wife on the insurance too and she is only 24 but going off what you guys have said dont get why its so much extra.

The Leasing/Finance company that own the vehicle will have a view on you modifying/tuning the vehicle,

its in the unlikely situation that it had a major failure at the roadside and was recovered there is likely to be some discussion on the vehicle being modified,

the warranty is for them to make a claim against.

Yeah this was already a concern an why I was asking about warranty, between this and the fact of cost involved with insurance I wont be bothering, just gonna keep is standard now. :(
