Slightly larger rear wiper blade.

Featured Replies

Anyone else fitted a larger rear wiper blade to their octy hatch??

Could only get a 440mm blade rather than the standard 400mm blade and i have to say that it works a treat

part number....?

How does it work better than the standard one

wipes more of the rain off giving more rear visibility i'd expect

bigger sweep=less :rain:

Cant believe someone actually asked how it worked better lmao.

Creates more friction and hence imparts more heat into the windscreen - so rain will quickly evaporate between wipes.

Really guys, it was an honest simple question.

Thanks

Bigger Blade, More Friction, More heat, Burns Motor out.

I was thinking along the lines of less noise when the rear wiper is operated as the pressure is spread over a bigger surface, I try not to use my rear wiper because of the noise it makes on the window.

Even then, water isn't exactly thick and hard to see through and your only gaining an extra 40mm, measure it roughly between your fingers, not that much. Never mind it is only your rear wiper.

Note please. I'm not having a go at the op I'm having a go at the consecutive posters who couldn't think of anything better to bring to the thread other than to take the p.

So does anyone else have a noisy rear wiper blade, it is clean and it makes the same noise per rain x and post rain x before anyone tells me to clean the blade.

Oh and a bigger blade would actually result in less friction (at the point of contact) as the pressure is spread over a wider area, think tyres, which would you choose to drive on snow with, 225/40 or 195/60?

the 195/60 as they will sink in the snow down to tarmac and grip better

Yeah mine was extremely noisy when I bought the car, I fitted a new blade (standard size direct replacement)

It's been silent since, but like you say it's not often you need it.

I normally use it once or twice on a morning when I first get in the car, and that's it

Mine clears fine on the way over but the reverse track it jumps and makes the scraping noise and just leaves loads of wiper lines, it's shat! It works again if you clean it properly... for about 5 minutes!

I think the rotor arm is far too weak in torsion to expect much from it at all. To be honest I never use it but it still annoys me when its raining and I select reverse gear.

If your rear wiper is noisy then it's time to get a new blade. After a while the rubber can get hard and it jumps when wiping, hence the noise. Worked for me anyway.

I hate rear wipers... waste of space IMHO

Get some of that rain repellent on and you dont need to use the wiper ... ever!

My mates mini has 2 of the buggers!

The laws of friction state that the frictional force is independent of the contact area so in your example both tyre have the same co-efficient of friction.

Agreed i had my own rain repellent developed for people to be super easy to apply and last at least 6 months.

You de-activate that setting with VCDS, if you don't like it. I turned it off on mine when my rear wiper motor failed, in between getting another one sourced.

I still don't get how people see a rear wiper blade as a waste of time, I don't disagree whith them just don't under stand there reasoning. I see the rear wiper as a safety aid, just like the side and interior mirrors. Rain X comes up a lot, but then I don't want to be putting chemicals on my windows, I like the fact I have 3 good working wipers and use them when I want.

I use my rear wiper around 6 times a day.

Once to clear the condensation off the rear screen before reversing off the drive, then another couple of wipes to clear off the condensation that runs down the rear screen from off the roof.

The same applies after being stood at work all day for the return journey.

For those who reckon the rear wiper is a waste of time then I can only assume they don't use their rear view mirror enough or they live in a much warmer/drier climate than I do!
