Oil Warning Light won't go out...

Featured Replies

Hi,

My oil low level warning light on the dash came on. I topped up and checked the level was OK on the dipstick. However, the light will not go out. I read in the manual that it should go out if the bonnet is open for more than 3 minutes and will come back on after 100km if the level is too low.

Anyone had this issue before and know why the dash light won't go out?

Thanks in advance.

Is it not the oil pressure light? Id be doing a pressure test asap.

sounds like a faulty sensor but I'd ring the dealer and ask their advice. not worth taking a risk IMHO

Happened to me a while back. I topped up the oil but the light came back on. IIRC I disconnected the battery for a minute and never had a problem since.

It's definitely not the oil pressure light. This is different. This one is the oil can with the wave type line below it.

I've seen them come on, stay on and then go out at a random point on a hill later, then work perfectly from then out.

Could be a bit of muck got into the sensor, so I guess you could ask if it's worth a flush at the next oil service.

Does the warning light come on to tell you the bonnet is open? Is the bonnet closing properly? Do the wipers work when the bonnet is open?

Basically the warning light is reset by the bonnet switch in the catch.

Thank you for your advice. I checked and no the bonnet light is not coming on and the wipers do work when the bonnet is open. Therefore, it must be what you have suggested.

Garage had already told me if the dipstick level was OK then I can continue to drive and it is booked in to be repaired.

Thanks again.

Follow the wire from the bonnet catch to the connector, unplug the connector and touch a paper clip across the terminals with the ignition on. Then reconnect and the light will be off.

After a 90 mile round trip the light decided to go off? Is that normal? Did the oil level just need to settle or something?

Sounds like a dodgy connection to your bonnet switch if the wipers work with the bonnet open.

Did you follow the advice in post #9?

No - the car is under warranty and is booked back in to the garage. I'll let them sort it out. Just wanted to let people know that the oil light went out after my trip.

If the 'low oil level' lamp comes on the only thing that will switch it off is the ECU recognising the bonnet gas been opened & closed. Regardless of whether you top up the oil the level won't be rechecked for 100km (aprox 60 miles) whereby if its not been topped up the light will come back on.

Your problem has been the ECU has not recognised the bonnet being opened/closed which if your wipers/washers worked with the bonnet open confirms but as the light gas now gone out suggests a bad connection to the bonnet switch.

Make sure this is explained clearly when you take the car into the garage as it won't be stored as a fault as the ECU seeing the bonnet shut is normal.

Hope that's a help

Thanks for airing this. Had the same problem, happen while doing about 90 near Perpignon - so a long way home on the back of a low lowloader! Checked oil, about 1/2 full, so topped up with v.expensive oil. Did reoccur a couple of times but not since I got back. Will check bonnet switch connector - if I can find it.

My car finally went into Skoda today. They confirmed they needed to order a new bonnet switch and retest. Thank god for warranty :)
