MK2 Fabia vRS Dipstick.

Featured Replies

I check mine when cold as its never accurate when hot - how hot is hot? And how long is long? Nobody has any idea and people measure at different heats and times after running.

Best way is first thing on the morning after its been sat all night.

The result should be marginally (2-5mm) higher when sat over night than when checked at 85 degrees and 10 mins.

Were is it then when cold?

At what actual point on your dipstick?

Cold this Morning mine was on the top orange blob.

After 120 miles & then stopped for 5 minutes it was between the top of the hatch & blob.

Now cold again it is off the metal and sitting on the orange blob again.

Happy with no oil used, as usual,

but not clear to see on the metal area of the dipstick when cold.

(was topping my washer bottle, so worth dipping while at it.)

3.6 litres of oil in the engine.

George sounds like you've got 2 much oil in yours? From what everyone else says ?

Top of hatch when cold - mid hatch when warm. I keep it this way so I know its fine lol

I always check when hot and manage to be fairly consistent with oil temperature and standing time. I do this because that is what the handbook instructs. However I do tend to agree with what you say about better consistency when checking from cold and I don't know the real technical reason for the hot check. On two occasions service technicians have managed to overfill mine. Oil will always be slightly higher up the dipstick when cold after the car has been left standing.

seboni121,

Doubtful since i have done 3 oil changes on this car & i did one on my other.

16,000 total miles between both.

(that was after dropping oil put in at dealerships twice to the wrong quantity.)

4 oil changes & no oil used between changes.

3.6 litres of oil showing the correct level when checked after running at Normal Running temperature.

I will just carry on as is.

Quality oil, good running temperature, no oil used and good MPG when driven economically.

win win as far as i am concerned.

It would be good to hear from 'Wills' that got a new engine and the garage put it out with Oil high up the stick.

he posted the picture.

I copied his picture and it is in post #1.

Well at least you've no issues that's good, apparently there might be a class action against vw Australia regarding the 1.4tsi engine, this is not gospel just what's in the ether ;)

Good, it is what i suggested again only last week.

It needs to happen in the UK as well IMO.

I have an engine that was rebuilt at 4000 miles, an ex demo sold on then taken back in by Skoda

& yet was sent out the Skoda Dealership with too much oil in from the rebuild being done..

Great engine but it will never be near any other Skoda Workshop again.

VAG/Skoda are a disgrace.

Sadly there appear to be some Technicians in the workshops that are also totally incompetent.

It is easy enough to look at the invoice & check to see if you are charged for 3.6 litres of Long Life oil.

Best to always check what the dipstick shows right after the service.

You never know, someone not being that careful might just have put in 3.9 litres.

It's been noted also that they think a lot of these cars will go bang at around 50k on the clock ?

I very much doubt that of the engines that get looked after correctly.

Plenty of standard engines getting used hard with no issues.

Sharkriders is rising in mileage just fine.

Check fluids & use the correct parts and there should be plenty that last 'long time mister'.

A 5 year warranty & you should get your moneys worth out of them.

Smiles per miles.

42,000 miles, commuting, driving instruction, meets, hillclimbs, and a trip around europe and the nurburgring.... not a drop of oil used.....

I'll let you know if it implodes at 50k... but I highly doubt it! lol.....

I find the dipstick on these cars more or less impossible to read. I'm petrified of overfilling the thing so tend not to top up unless it starts warning of a low oil warning at which point I know it needs a litre or there abouts.

It went in the garage and i was advised the oil was very low, hadnt received the amber warning and was topped up with 5w30 (not 40 as per the fixed service spec). I attempted to check the level on a flat service approx 15 mins after driving the car and the oil level seemed to be over the hatched area which makes me think its now slightly overfilled.

Cars running perfectly and hasnt needed a top up for over 4k so not going to get too worried about it......i'll just keep watching out for that amber warning! Think its abour time VAG did away with dipsticks altogether.

This thread (in common with others) has become over-complicated and a touch paranoid.

Check your oil frequently, extent depends on your personal knowledge gleaned of your engine's consumption.

In my experience, hot or cold makes little difference, whatever the handbook says

When dipstick level is at bottom of hatched area, add 500ml of oil, level will now be at top of hatched area.

View the warning llight as a "backstop" only.

That's it.

I'm sick of these oil threads....

I'm sick of these oil threads....

I think I just said the same :hi: .

Seems I'm about to join them. Knew I spoke too soon :(
