share the CR love

How many miles is your commute? I did a quick run to drop my boy off at nursery today. Its 3.5 miles and I got 27mpg according to maxidot.

I'm very happy with my VRS CR. And I do love the DSG.

A bit of background - my first car was 1992 VW Golf 2.8 VR6, automatic, then switched to Seat Leon 1.8T, 4WD, manual. And after that came the reasonable Passat 1.9TDI, also manual. Only listing cars I had for years and not the occasional Japanese racers.

Anyway, DSG is brilliant, the engine is surprisingly smooth and silent (actually, first time I heard clearly the "diesel sound" was a cold start in -18c) and I think the performance from 125kW and god-knows-how-many torque diesel is very pleasing. I guess I'm a diesel junkie from now on. Was a bit unhappy with Passat being so darn slow. But the Skoda is a different animal :)

My commute is only about 7 or 8 miles - only just up to temp once I arrive on the colder mornings!! The fuel consumption is certainly increased whilst the engine is getting up to temp!

Hmm. I'm sufficiently worried. I understand its cold and obviously consumption increases but nearly 20mpg difference is a lot.

I went in to work a different way this morning, a way which gives me some uphill as soon as I set off rather than flat, I did this as my front screen was seriously misted up, anyway, maxidot showed 37.1 by the time I was at work however, that was with everything on i.e. Demister set to Max, heated door mirrors and heated rear screen on.

I have about a 35 mile commuate, about 1/3 A and B roads and the rest Motorway. Once its warmed up I do give it a bit stick, although nowhere near the red-line. I tend to sit around 80 on the motorway and get about 47-51 mpg on Maxidot. So fairly happy with it so far given its only got 1700 on the clock.

With my last Octavia PD140 I was getting low 40s when I first bought it so I'm impressed that the CR engine is delivering straight out of the box so to speak.

I'm going to do the work run tonight after hours and just see what the impact of the traffic is on the mpg (if any), then fill it to the brim and use fuelly to see what I've achieved in a couple of weeks.

I suppose after that, if it's still returning some poor figures I'll have to go back to the dealer.

I told the missus the other day i would be longer after dog walk as i needed to initiate a DPF regen. She looked at me like i was retarded. Dont use this line when on the pull as i doubt it would impress the ladies.

As for MPG i wouldnt stress over average figure of high 30's or low 40's. Its winter and i only do short journeys and i struggle to get into the 40's in mine. I take some of the reported mpg claims on here with a pinch of salt plus i know i can hit 50mpg if i tootle along at 70mph, i just choose not to.

I'd be quite happy with high 30's! But mid 20's is a joke!

Yea mid 20's is bad. Dont think i could achieve that even if i tried. Have you tried taking the handbrake off? Joking aside my commute is 2 miles each way at the moment so car never gets warmed up and i still get high 30's average and thats with demisters etc. Do you know anyone with a similar car so you can do a back to back test to compare them?

Only thing i can think of is the DSG, thats the only thing thats seams to be different to the other CR's posting here My Blackline although we arn't using full rev range during the run in period is getting mid 40's and thats just a 7-8 mile trip to work and back. Even if we do give it some welly when the weathers nice i doubt we could get it into the 20's. My petrol VRS is doing 26mpg to work and back similar distance and its older so how shall we say "open her up a bit" on the dual carriage way when traffice pemits and its safe to do so. I would get the dealers to explain the values on the display even if they are only an estimate it does seam rather low i'd get some calibration done with actual full tank miles aswell.

Just out of interest whats your Altia like???

Altia?

I did a dummy run tonight after putting some diesel in. Car was from cold, as it would be in the morning. Only difference being there was no traffic on the roads to contend with, so it was pretty much a clear run there and back, bar a few set of traffic lights.

Home to nursery / 3.5 miles - 33.3mpg / mixture of 40mph & 30mpg roads.

Nursery to work / 4 miles - 38.3mpg / mixture of 30mph, 40mph and 60mph roads.

Reset the consumption average at this point and car was pretty much up to temperature.

Work to home / 6.3 miles - 41.9mpg / mixture of 40mph & 60mph roads.

So even with no traffic to contend and the car fully warmed up, I'm still only just getting past 40?

Before I had the Skoda I really liked it. We bought it after having 1 as a hire car is spain in late 2007. just under 50k on the clock now. Before the petrol brigade latch on to the fact it's only doing 10k a year it was the same price as the wheezy 1.6 petrol so was a no brainer (It was on offer because they were changing to the CR TDI engine). The wife uses it for work evey day 15 mile commute into birmingham and back and it does 42-44mpg with old club foot driving during the rush hour.... on the throttle, on the brakes, on the throttle... you get the picture! It's been 100% reliable, not had anything go wrong with it at all. Serviced every 10K it's had tyres, front and rear pads, a cambelt change that's it. Internally the quality isn't as good as the Octy, but it's on a par with vauxhalls etc. there's loads of room inside, especially in the back as it's based on a golf plus so has loads of room for adults in the back. Many who travel in it comment on the rear space. Seats are firmer than the Octy. it only has a single CD player and front only electric windows but does have cruise. It has standard air con. Boot is ok, not like an Octy as all the extra length of the Octy is behind the rear wheels but there again nothing else is. It not a bad size especially as the car is taller this gives extra height to the boot. It's got a spare too! Downside rear visability is not the best. A high boot line and small mirrors make reversing for the less confident a challenge! It's got the same 1.9PD engine as your octy and is about 10 inches shorter in length and same width not counting mirrors, but mirrors on the octy are bigger. It's got the same size tyres on as my old SE plus and an elegance on 16" alloys, strangely the Octy feels bigger inside up front-probably dash design. Ride wise I've got the reference sport with sports suspension, so it's firmer than my previous Octy SE plus and feels more 'chuckable' and planted, but not as sporty as my vRS on it's 225/40 18 inch rims but it goes round corners well with little/no roll. if anything the chassis feels like it could handle more than the 1.9 has to offer. The stylance and reference don't have the sports suspension. It's noisier than my CR vRS, but PDs are. safety wise it's got ABS,TCS and 6 airbags- front side and curtain. Kerb weight is higher on the Altea at 1405kg, but the spare tyre will count for a good chunk of this as will the exta metal in it beause it's a foot taller in height I guess. Official combined is 52.3 which we've never achieved, possibly down to being used mostly for commuting and driven with heavy foot as above. Overall still pleased with it- it's a reliable car which the wife loves and she says she'll keep it for a few more years, not as quiet or refined as an octy but good fun to drive and a good workhorse for trips to the skip etc. So far it's flown through every MOT.

I get those figures on <3 mile runs.....anything above that and i never see less than 45mpg. That 6.3 mile journey when warm should easily see +50mpg.

This is what I feared. I've only managed to get 50mpg out of it once, and that was a run from Leeds to Blackpool, and even then it took until I was at Chorley (60 miles).

I'm getting about 45 mpg out of mine (calculated) at the moment (only 725 miles on the clock). It has a mixture of town driving and county roads, no motorway or duel carriageway. I have noticed that it drinks fuel round town when cold but what do you expect from a 2 ltr?

Went from a Fabia I vRS to a DSG Octavia vRS - best thing I ever did.

Not as good on the fuel as the Fabia but a much nicer place to be on a journey.

Mrs Chester still has a Fabia I vRS which I love to drive.

Love the DSG (my first "auto" in 30 years of driving) - not sure I would buy a manual again.

Only downside is the amount of time it takes to warm up on cold mornings - on my 20 mile commute I had covered 14 miles this morning before the temp guage had reached normal. This is on a mix of A and B roads at around 50 mph with the occassional 30mph through some villages.

I get roughly 38 - 41 mpg from short journeys ( depending on how much right foot action given ). On a run get high 40's Haven't had a major distance run yet and only 850 miles on the clock ( dsg box ) Overall impressed with the mpg for a car that can move when it needs to !!

Did a longish run today due to work, Leeds to Stockton and then back again. It didn't go above 45mpg, despite all the roads being 60/70mph.

I feel I'm at best, 5mpg short but at worst, possibly 10.

I've made my mind up up to go the dealer though this weekend, and just ask a question at least. I could, of course, just be being paranoid.

I doubt you will get much joy from the dealer. It may be better to get a demonstrator and do a similar run in it and see what mpg it delivers then mimick the run in your car afterwards. Take the service manager with you in the cars so they cant dispute it.

Ahhhh if you think you're Paranoid have a look at this-see if you meet the minimum criteria! You're not alone............ :giggle:

Don't forget with the temperatures what they are at the moment you will not get the best mpg.

At the moment I'm probably down about 5mpg on a tank compared to the warmer summer months.

Also, I believe that the winter diesel does not give the best mpg figures.
