Pd160 alternative, now finished.

Featured Replies

Thought i would try to make a homemade/pikey mod alternative to the over priced pd160.

This is what i have at the moment.

The air duct i used was this one as some of asked for info on parts.

It is made to take various hoses so i used the largest 76mm also from ebay.

I bught this one because it had end pieces that might of come in handy but you can buy similar stuff for cheaper for just the pipe.

I chopped the air duct reducers of just using a stanley blade and tided up with a file.

I plan on using the original front part that screws into the front of the car and cutting out the dust cover as it pushes all the air in the wrong direction. I plan on bonding the parts together to make it all look neater with out jubilee clips.

Will start on the fitting tomorrow if the weather allows me.

Thanks, joe.

Looks good mate

Nice to see someone trying something new rather than spunking nearly a ton on a pipe lol.

How's your cone in a box going too?

Nice work Joe, watching with interest :)

That will go nicely straight onto a carbon fibre induction kit ;)

Cheers guys.

Lost interest in the cone in a box for the moment, i have it all there and cut to shape but the more i look at it the more i think its not the best and cant see how it would benifit over a panel filter really.

Matt funny enough i have been looking at the one ash makes just for something different and this would mate up pretty well with one indeed.

^^^ yea iv looked at the ASH one.. only down the road from me (dewsbury) so no postage :)...

...then i saw the generic universal carbon ones for £39.99 delivered including 76mm pipe...

So.... think might go that way lol (tight northern get that i am :D)

Only had a quick look but wasnt to sure about maf sensor fitment, might take another look and if its only 40 quid wont be a huge loss and still its all under a pd160 pipe on its own.

+ u wouldn't need the pipe.. so £60 for intake bit, pipe + carbon filter.. tbh im waiting a reply from the seller as i assumed it was 76mm but cant find it in the ad anywhere..

Will be ok for MAF.. if its 76mm will be slight reducer pipe needed only from MAF to filter..

Ebay seller came back to me :)

It is 76mm ;) result..

Got a link mate?

Nice one Joe, liked that.

Credit to you for doing something different to the PD160 intake!

I have this from my 206 days. Still in my shed doing nothing, might have to dig it out now!

Nice 1.. u probably didnt cut it all the way to 76mm for the pug so ull just have to cut it back + fit the piping :)

Does it look as quality as the better branded stuff in real life?

The carbon effect looked and feels spot on actually, it looks more expensive than it was. I remember offering it up to my mates carbon BMC airbox and you couldn't tell the difference.

Looking forward to seeing how u bond the inlet bit on joe :)

Remember one of the flaps on the front stops water getting in so dont chop that off... can never remember which one tho lol :D

I've managed to use some 80mm alloy piping and silicone bends to get from airbox to air intake on front of the car.

So i forgot about this but things are moving on with my car so needed it back together and this is what i came up with in the end.

So thats my JP160 intake. I think it will do the job.

Nicely done mate.

Is she nearly there now?!?

Lets just say i will find out the real damage next week :S

Real damage?!

Find out how much metal has gone in the engine.

Oh and damage to the wallet.

Ah of course.... touched wood mate, hopefully will be OK!

I think this makes far more sense than 100 sovs for the pipe

Is there any proven empirical benefit yet ? Has anyone actually mapped their car on anything stage 1 and less and seen any measurable benefit on this ?

From what I have read here its for the "big wave surfers" lol, those seeking over 200bhp,

however if you are mapped to below that you just spunked £100 for a bigger pipe for drawing extra air you don't actually have the capacity for bringing into the engine or something?

A bit like having a bigger pipe for your vacuum cleaner to suck the air in but not a bigger wattage of motor, something like that seems a good enough analogy for me

  • Author

Nothing gets sucked through the pipe its just air directed from the out side, so a biger pipe and mouth can carry more air to the air filter. But i have saved about 80 quid here so its all good :)
