good stuff  fair bit though :$$$: :$$$: :$$$: :$$$: :$$$: :$$$: :$$$:

Yeh not cheap, but as it's the diff that goes in the standard box, and that then wipes out the gearbox, in the long run it's cheaper to fit an LSD than keep replacing gearbox's lol (well thats what I told the mrs anyway :D).

  • Ok so since the last trackday I haven't done much more with the car. I fitted a short shifter, as the selector on my car was a little sloppy and this seemed the easiest way to tighten it up a little,

  • So last thursday I had the wheel alignment done ready for Combe on Saturday.   Well it was out a little (although it drove straight enough) after replacing the n/s driveshaft at oulton and then havi

It's not so much the times that i'm bothered about (as I just do the trackdays for fun, not to be competitive), I just don't want to be killing another gearbox at the next trackday (or the 1 after) lol.

Faster = more smiles your a racer at heart lol :-)

Well not alot has happened, I tracked down a good conditon used G60 flywheel a couple of weeks back.

The week before last I was told that the price I was given on the wavetrac diff, was wrong as there had been a price increase and therefore it would now cost me another £50 (after haggling) to what I was originally quoted, which as you can imagine pleased me no end.

Anyhow the wavetrac was meant to arrive sometime this week, but it has been a no show.

I tried chasing it up on friday and was promised a call back once they had tracked where it is (which I didn't get).

So today I went to inters as I was given a free ticket to get in, and walking around the trade stands, I spotted a wavetrac diff for sale, brand new and at a special show price, the problem was with the full fitting kit it was £8 more expensive than the "revised" price I had been given by the company I ordered from. I was also told that the show price was the final price and there was no movement on it :(

Anyhow 20 mins later I had myself a wavetrac diff and fitting kit and got them to price match the original price I was given by the other supplier so they basicly knocked off the extra £58 and I don't have to wait any longer  :D

So first thing tomorrow I need to cancel my first order (feel a bit rude having to do that), but at the end of the day they have changed the orignal price they quoted me and it has taken longer to arrive than they quoted me too and also failed to call me back.

Anyway here are some crap pics of it.

Oooo nice. I have pictures like that. Dying to get mine fitted but I'm waiting until after I have to drive 1500km in 2 weeks.

Don't want to do anything that might end up with the car off road for a while.

Are you fitting it yourself?

Any chance you can give me the numbers that are printed on your diff (just want to make 110% sure they put the right diff in the box for me lol) ? as I noticed you have the 181wk 02JB diff.

No I am getting a local company to fit it for me (the used gearbox I bought was dropped off with them 2 weeks ago and i'm told they have it stripped ready for me to drop the diff and fitting kit off), I don't mind pulling engines to bits, but I don't do gearbox's :giggle:

The quickest way to tell is if the flange has smooth or threaded holes.

Mine has threaded.

Number on the flange of mine: 116-31-002-B  13D19

Number on the body: 116-30-001-J  13D22

I'm itching to get it fitted now :D

Cheers for that mate, mine has:

116-31-001-J 13D12 on the flange

Will be dropping it off at the workshop later today :D

Well it looks like I might not miss the trackday after all now (fingers crossed).

I got the gearbox back about 30 mins ago, with the Wavetrac fitted

Just need to throw it in the engine bay now :D

Gearbox, clutch and flywheel fitted now, I also fitted powerflex black series dog bone mount bushes (well just rear for now, will fit the front bush later on) :D

Was a little worried at first, as when started on the ramp and put into first gear there was some clunking.

It only seemed to do it in first gear and around 1200rpm and again around 2200rpm.

Anyway after letting the oil circulate around the box and checking I could get all gears, I took it for a test drive.

As soon as I got to about 40mph in 3rd, I heard a clunk and then something hitting the bottom of the car a few times, and then noticed something fly out the back.

I turned around and picked up a large chunk of gearbox.

The clunking in 1st gear seems to have gone now :D

I've only done 2 miles in the car, need to get an MOT on it tomorrow, and then do about another 28 miles (30 in total) and I will then dump the gearoil and fill up with new, to get rid of the assembly lube thats in there,

Then I just need to bed in the new clutch, adjust the gear linkages and maybe get the tracking done again as it doesn't seem to drive straight now that it's all been apart.

  • Author

I think I had the most of out the old box lol.

Amazingly the clutch and dual mass are still in good condition.

It's late and I'm a little confused, how do you plan to do 28 miles in that gearbox lol? Is this the one with the new diff fitted or have I missed a post and that was a replacement!

The pics are of the old one, now it has been removed from the car.

Not alot of point taking pictures of the new gearbox with the wavetrac inside it, as it looks just like any other gearbox.

Well yeah of course I just got confused, thought this had happened to your new box, sorry!

If it had of happened to the new box, I would be posting pictures of my burned out car, not the broken gearbox lol

Ok so managed to get a few miles on the car last week, I replaced the brake servo plastic hose with some propper brake servo vac hose on thursday and I noticed when the plastic hose was removed, it had gone very soft along the bulkhead, so heat had definately gotten to it at some point.

On friday I had the gearoil drained and replaced, just to remove the assembly paste from the gearbox, and by the time I got to castle combe on saturday the clutch had done a massive 80 miles bedding in :D

So I was a little worried about it, holding up to the abuse it was going to get, but it did ok.

We didn't get to combe until about 11am due to unforseen circumstances, and by the time we had signed on, done the drivers breifing and I had changed the wheels to my track wheels, it was just before they stopped for lunch that we hit the track, so only about 6 - 7 mins, but gave me enough time to get a feel for how the car was going to handle with the diff,  clutch and a bloody hot track.

Pulled back into the paddock and checked tyre pressures, they had gone up from 28 psi to 38psi on the front and from 28 - 34psi on the rear  :peek:

So I dropped the pressures down to 25 psi ready for after lunch.

With the lower pressures, it took a few laps to get them to come in, and then once they did, the seemed to go off again pretty quickly, before coming back in again, was all a bit strange but I soon got used to it

The diff was very strange at first, on the road it makes the steering heavier, and gives you a huge amount of feel through the steering, on track however I found that the steering was light and precise, but the feel did remain.

I noticed I was getting alot less wheel spin coming out of the corners, which I guess means the diff was doing it's thing, although by the end of my 3rd session the n/s/f tyre was slick in the centre.

Sadly 3 sessions was all I could get in, as on the cool down lap I spotted a cv boot on the track and jokingly said that I bet it's from my car, half a lap later the steering wheel is vibrating badly and it's trying to pull me off the track.

Turns out the cv boot had failed (both clips were still on the driveshaft), and thus all the cv grease had gone around the wheel arch and the cv joint over heated and failed :(

I got the AA to pick me up, only took them 2 hours to turn up, and then they sent a propper jobs worth that told me I wasn't covered as I had been on track (even though there small print says that they do cover for none competative events), he argued with me, and even went out of his way to pointout to the office that the car was track prepared and had been used on track, anyway after lots of phone calls from him to the office, he reluctantly agreed to recover the car. So once I wound the coilovers up on the front, he loaded it up onto his tow thing (no idea what it's called), and when he rang the office back for the job number they told him a flatbed was on the way, as he had told them he couldn't load it up originally.

Anyway after just under 5 hours from when I rang them, I finally got home (a mear 40 miles), needless to say i'm not impressed with there service so far. :wall:

Luckily the driveshaft is under warranty as it's only just over 2 months old, so a replacement is on it's way, but I think i'll sort out some cooling ducting for the cv joint and brakes together (even if for the first time ever on track, I had no braking issue's at all, not even a bit of smoke from them :giggle: ) :D

Anyway heres a few video's of my 3 sessions.

I tried the gopro mounted on my helmet just above my eyes to get that "what the driver see's view" but I got the settings wrong on the camera, so it looks too zoomed in :(

Only the 2nd video is really watchable from the gopro, the 1st and last were pretty bad.

No idea why, but first half of the session didn't record on the iphone.

Ok so I had the driveshaft replaced under warranty, without any issues :)

I have come to the conclusion that I need some brake ducting to try and cool them down as I think it's the heat of the brakes being transfered into the driveshaft causing the cv boots to melt and then the cv joints to fail as all the grease escaped.

So I went over to silicon hoses last week (part of Forge) and ordered some 63mm ducting from them, which is due in later this week.

At the same time I nipped into Forge and ordered 1 of there baffled sumps, as I am a little worried that I will run into oil starvation issue's, that should also be ready to collect later this week.

I am now looking to polybush the car, as I think the rear wishbone bushes are now on there way out, so i'm trying to decide between Superpro or just go for Powerflex Black series.

As this is mainly a track car, i'm thinking Black, as I think a little extra vibration through the car, just adds to the experience anyway :D

I have noticed on the Golf that from the front bumper grills on each side of the car, there is nothing inside the bumper to the inner wheel arch liner, I was going to run  ducting through here and direct the air at the centre of the front hubs, I also think in one of the threads about hot brakes there are some plastic deflectors as used on a TT that clip on the lower wishbone to catch and direct air to the hubs, part numbers and everything were in the other thread, I will try and find it.

Ok I picked up some ducting for the brakes today, will try and remember to take pictures when I get around to fitting it, but knowing me I will forget.

Also picked this up today, not sure when I will fit it, almost looks too good to fit lol :D
