My Track Toy

Well Monday didn't go exactly to plan.

Everything was going ok, the car felt great on track, for the first time ever it actually turned into a corner, and went were I pointed it to, and this made the rear feel slightly loose (which is how I like a car to handle).

It caught me out a couple of times, as since fitting the LCR front end, i've not really driven the car.

The DS3000's were great for the first couple of laps, then seemed to go off a little, and then came back again (guess they needed bedding it a little more).

Anyway the first session of the day was just 10 mins after the safety car pulled in after doing some sighting laps.

In the pits I checked the car over and everything seemed ok (no brake fluid sprayed around the engine bay which made a nice change from the previous trackdays lol).

I did noticed 1 bleed nipple on the brembo's was slightly damp on the top, but a quick squirt with brake cleaner and it was dry again (could have been anything I guess).

Anyway 2nd session started ok, and the car was starting to feel nice as I was getting used to the biting point and the bite of the brakes and the handling of the car and I was just starting to push on a little when the clutch stopped gripping.

There was no warning, so I couldn't understand why I all of a sudden had no clutch, as I was coming upto the pitlane I pulled straight off the track, and as I slowed down in the pitlane it would take up drive again.

Anyway I drove it back to the paddock and parked up, opened the bonnet and noticed the top of the gearbox was wet, there was no smell as such, so I thought ok maybe the clutch slave has let go.

Had a good look about and couldn't see where the fluid had come from, but suddenly got a whiff of gearoil.

Got a trolley jack and as soon as I jacked it up, oil ran out (like a tap had been turned on) from between the bellhousing and the engine.

Gearbox dead :(, oh well **** happens.

Anyhow I left the car in the paddock for the day, and had a few passenger laps in my mates Leon Cupra, which was fun (although not as much fun as driving lol).

Around 3pm his steering started to feel funny, so the car was jacked up and the n/s/f wheel seemed loose, even though it was tight, and as the cv boot was split and grease was everywhere (like what happened to my car at the last trackday) we concluded his cv joint had failed (so no more tracktime for him either).

Around 4pm we called the AA to collect me, they turned up in 25 mins, only to inform us, unless an upgrade fee was paid (over £100) as the cover was only basic as it was free with through the bank, then they would only tow a max of 10 miles, or to the nearest garage.

I said forget it, I can push it to the garage (it's just outside the main gate lol), and decided to drive it.

The box was silent, no whining, crunching or anything, just had to be really gentle on the throttle to get the clutch to bite lol.

Anyway 3 or 4 miles later, the gearbox decided enough was enough and spat it's dummy out, leaving my mate to dodge bits of bearing behind me (ooops).

My mate turned around and went back to the garage by castle combe, to get a price to recover the car (it was silly money tbh) but on his way back, his cv joint let go, and he ended up stuck in the same car park as me lol.

He had recovery included with his insurance, however he didn't know who it was with, didn't have any phone numbers to ring, and the insurance company were closed.

Eventually (after about 45 mins of dialing various numbers and speaking to various companies) he managed to sort out his recovery.

Had to ring the father in law to get towed the 40 miles home lol (that was fun on a rope, through country lanes) :D

Anyway got it home in the end, and just need to sort a new gearbox, and clutch (so may aswell go for a G60/VR6 conversion) and maybe an LSD if I can get it for the right price.

Moral of the story, if your doing trackdays make sure you A) have recovery that will take you home and B) that you have the phone numbers and details you need.

Anyway some pics and vids of the 20 mins I managed to get on track lol

  • Ok so since the last trackday I haven't done much more with the car. I fitted a short shifter, as the selector on my car was a little sloppy and this seemed the easiest way to tighten it up a little,

  • So last thursday I had the wheel alignment done ready for Combe on Saturday.   Well it was out a little (although it drove straight enough) after replacing the n/s driveshaft at oulton and then havi

2nd and final session.

again incar of the above vid.

I love that overlay software!

Hats off to you buddy

Looking good there

You just one thing sorted and then what happens .....

Great thread Cossie, I have read with interest, you have also answered a lot of my questions.

1, Federal RSR's, I was going to buy these and fit to a V6 MK iv Golf, now I know it might be too heavy

2, Brakes, I was looking at D2500 and 1155 Mintex pads, might go for the D3000 now.

One thing you don't mention or I missed it is the suspension bushes, what have you got fitted and did you consider polybush, powerflex or the like?

You're living the dream buddy, respect. Wish I could afford to have a track car. Looks like a lot of fun!!

Not sure it's living the dream, but it's definately good fun (sometimes) lol.

Yeh the gopro gave me great quality video's but I wanted something that could give me some true speed readings, and the added bonus of lap times is great too, so I can try and get some consistancy going and have something to aim for.

Hats off to you buddy

Thanks mate, wanna lend me your gearbox ?? :D

Yeh as they say, **** happens, onwards and upwards though :D

Another trackday next month, so need to sort a gearbox and clutch / flywheel asap lol.

I'm pleased that i've provided some useful info for other members :)

As for your points:

1) The RSR's I was told might not be the best, but I did start a thread in the trackday section and a few members have said there not too bad. However my mate bought a set for his Leon Cupra, and to be fair they didn't do too bad on the day, the first couple of sessions they did start to go off after about 5 / 6 laps, but once they had cooled down over lunch, they seemed to harden a little and lasted much better in the afternoon, the grip level from them wasn't too far off R888's to be fair, and the wear rate seemed to be acceptable, however the Leon Cupra is a little lighter than the Octy vRS.

2) I had DS2500's on my Evo and they were great upto around 400bhp, but then I found they would fade easily, obviously the octy is nowhere near that power level, but I felt due to the extra weight and the fact it's heavy and late braking on track the DS3000 would be the better choice for me. On the road there ok from cold (about as good as cheap pads) but once there is a little temp into them, they bite nicely, and if you push firmly (but not stamp on them) you can lock the wheels at most speeds.

At the moment I am on standard bushes all round, as and when they start to wear out, they will be replaced with powerflex or superpro but I didn't see the point in replacing them until they need doing (i've done it in the past only to find the standard bushes are better than the poly stuff as alot of standard bushes use propper sperical bearings and alot of the poly bushes i've seen simply have an insert in them).

nice recent post, sorry to hear your bad news about the box/clutch.

one thing, it would be worth doing your bushes, epecially as you are tracking and especially as you have fitted an LCR front end, makes sense to poly bush, then you can set up the geommetry properly, knowing it won't change. Does make a difference, superpro would be my choice.

As above I will get around to the poly bush's as and when the standard ones wear out, at the moment I have more important things to sort out, like finding some superglue so I can fix this.

ooer ! list up what you are after and I will ask a few mates, I know where there is an Octy 20V turbo waiting to be broken, not sure the gearbox is the same but well worth a look for you.

Good effort.

I did that on the road though back last year lol

Minus the hole though

AFAIK the gearbox is different, but basicly I just need a gearbox and it's put a new G60 flywheel and VR6 clutch in at same time.

Would rather a gearbox that has an LSD fitted though :D

If you didn't put a hole in it, you were not trying hard enough :D

wowzers and i thought my disintegrated impellor was a bad result after track work but hats off to you sir

Hope you get it sorted too.

Worst case i guess you could take the "road" Octy on the next track day!

No I can't take the road octy on track the mrs would go mad if I broke that.

But I guess I could "borrow" the gearbox if needbe lol :D

we have a gearbox just taken out of a 1.8t TT sitting around at work not sure what the gear box code it though, i can find out if you are interested :)

  • Author

I think all TT's are 6 speed ?

hmmmm now you got me thinking.. im sure it is 5 but will double check tomorrow (i never drove it before it got stripped)

Maybe you could upgrade to the 6speed.

I know last weekend at Bedford how fast event I was in 3rd for the whole lap except for one corner.

3rd just seams too long a ratio to me.

I have considered going to 6 speed, but i've been told i'm better off sticking to 5 speed on track (and staying 5 speed also means I don't need to replace driveshafts or drop the exhaust, and heatshield to swap out the selector and rods).

  • Author

here you go, not sure what sort of money you are looking to spend but may as well post it up anyway for you :) it is a 5 speed

Cheers mate, but i'd rather stick with an EHA box if poss.

fair enough, thought i would offer it anyway :)

  • 2 weeks later...

Ok last friday I managed to pickup a "hopefully" good condtion used vRS gearbox (EHA code) for sensible money.

Yesterday I also ordered a Sach's VR6 clutch kit, oh and today I ordered a Wavetrac LSD and the full Fitting kit (hopefully be with me in 10 - 14 days), this means it will be cutting it fine to have the diff fitted to my gearbox and the gearbox fitted to the car before the next trackday (20th July) but if I miss the trackday then (I will cry) so be it lol.

Just need to source a G60 or ABF flywheel now and some flywheel bolts and gearoil.

good stuff  fair bit though :$$$: :$$$: :$$$: :$$$: :$$$: :$$$: :$$$:
