Just a quick thought with all the suspension and alignment problems your having, the driveshaft problem is like the one I had which was caused by the TT six spoke wheels you have fitted, I had these on while my spiders while they were getting re-furbed, once I put the spiders back on car ran fine again, I think the main problem is caused by the weight of the TT wheels 13.2 KG compared to Spiders 9.3kg,  the extra weight to rotate can't be doing the drive train any good. Only an idea might worth trying a different set of rims.

I don't think the wheels have anything to do with it, in my case as I have 2 sets of wheels and tyres (TT track wheels and S3 road wheels), and when it's setup correctly it does drive straight.

I think in your case, it was more down to the way the tyres had worn on your TT wheels.

  • Ok so since the last trackday I haven't done much more with the car. I fitted a short shifter, as the selector on my car was a little sloppy and this seemed the easiest way to tighten it up a little,

  • So last thursday I had the wheel alignment done ready for Combe on Saturday.   Well it was out a little (although it drove straight enough) after replacing the n/s driveshaft at oulton and then havi

Ok so it turns out that the damage isn't too serious.

The Silver Project top mount on the drivers side has failed and the bearing has come through the top.

When the car is in the air, the bearing sits flush, but when you lower the car down again, so that the weight is on it, you can see it raise up, which would give me the knocking noise over bumps.

So I think I will replace the top mounts now with powerflex (which is a bit of a ****er as I gave (well swapped) a new pair of powerflex top mounts to my mate the other week).

What colour you got as I have a spare

Well after some research, it seems i'm not the first to have a bearing fail on a Silver Project top mount.

I contacted Silver Project in Poland to ask about a replacement bearing, and they informed me that they now supply a different bearing with a Teflon coating, instead of the ones I had.

The price is £30 + £5 postage.

Apparently they only give a 6 month warranty on there products, and even though i've done hardly any miles, that is that.

Also because they have changed the bearing type, really i'd need 2 new bearings (1 per side) otherwsie there could be issue's, so that would make it £65 - £70 for the 2 new bearings.

But a new pair of complete top mounts is less than £84.

There having a f**kin giraffe.

There attitude stinks, there warranty is laughable and there products it seems are substandard.

I will be removing mine now and fitting Powerflex like I should have done in the first place.

Silver Project are jokers, be warned.

I would like a harness bar, but it's not required.

The angle of the belts is only an issue if you are using reclining seats afaik.

If I fit in the seats, you will fit no problem ;)

Well i'd like to say a massive thank you to Clive for sorting out a replacement top mount for me.

It arrived this morning, and I managed to fit it this afternoon as it stopped raining.

Just took the car for a spin around the block, and I don't know if it's placebo, the new seats or if I had a dodgy top mount all along, but the car feels soo much better now.

Cheers again Clive.

p.s. the old top mount was proper fubar.

p.p.s Now I have driven the car with the new seats fitted, I really need to get the seats mounted on the floor, they are way too high up for me, I have to have the steering wheel as far up as it will go, just to stop my knee's hitting it when driving :(

Superb

Maybe this has been the problem all along **** top mount ??

  • Author

No don't think so, the alignment problems first started before the top mounts were fitted (thats not to say that the originals were in good condition when they were removed though).

Nice belts them mate  :p    seats look serious too!

Seats need to be lower, feel like i'm sat in an off roader :D

Ok Wednesday evening, I had the drivers seat frame modified so that it would sit lower, took a bit of fabricating to do it, as the frames that I'm using were a bit flimsy so needed strengthening at the same time.

Anyway it worked a treat, managed to get it low enough that I felt comfortable, sadly though I found that the edge of the drivers seat had been rubbing on the top seatbelt mount and put a small hole in the material :( so i'll have to get the mother in law to stitch that up for me soon, luckily it can't be seen when the seat if mounted, and i've now made a small pad that is wedged between the B pillar and the seat to stop it happening again.

We haven't had time to do the passenger seat frame yet, so for now the seats look like they are mounted WRC style is the driver sitting lower than the passenger.

I was on track at Castle Combe yesterday, for the Autometrix Vw/Audi trackday.

The car performed well, I managed over 40laps in total (including outlaps and inlaps with my vid's didn't capture) and not a single driveshaft failure (thats twice now i've been to Combe and also a Ring trip without a driveshaft failure, that must be a record).

The 1st session was good, car felt ok but the tyres were a bit hit and miss, as were the brakes, it felt like the car was understeering a bit and the brake pedal was spongy at times, but I got through it :D

For the first time ever I didn't empty the boot before doing some laps of combe, so I had the spare wheel, jack, wheel brace, full tool kit, 2 spare ball joints, various bits and bobs and 2 driveshafts cable tied to the rear panel (something I did for the ring trip that worked well as they never moved an inch).

However at combe, the cable ties didn't hold up too well and I ended up with a pair of driveshafts flying around in the back of the car :peek: , Luckily they settled down when they got caught on 1 of my harness straps so they sat in the footwell behind the driver seat, which allowed me to carry on with the session.

Looking at the laptimes I was pretty consistent with 1:22's which considering the stuff in the boot / rear footwells, and the passenger I was happy with.

That was the only session I did in the morning.

2nd session was straight after lunch, again the tyres were inconsistent, the 595 RS-R's don't seem to like my driving style on a warm track, the brakes were a little better this time, which was nice.

Laptimes were a bit up and down in this session, mainly because I had a couple of Audi RS3's holding me up :D, but there were a few 1:22's in there again.

Straight after the session I checked the tyre pressures whilst they were still hot, fronts were around 42psi (again) and rears were 39 - 40psi, so I dropped them down to 28psi all round, whilst hot in the hope that they wouldn't peak above 30 again on the next session.

3rd session was about 20 mins later, and the tyres were a little better, still felt like there was some understeer but it wasn't too bad, rear felt a little loose which was nice :D, brakes were again not too bad.

4th and final session was cut short, first of all I got black flagged by mistake   then a couple of laps later I ran out of fuel :peek:, well I didn't run out as such, the fuel gauge was at the bottom, so I knew it was low, but as I came out of bobbies it coughed and spluttered and a couple of cracks out of the exhaust, so I backed it off and cames straight off the track, when I parked up the brakes were smoking pretty bad, as I didn't do a cooldown lap. Fuel gauge was as low as it could go, range was 0 miles :D

So I let the car cooldown for 10 mins, before attempting to drive to the nearest Shell garage which was 12.5 miles away, which I managed to do, but it took about 10 of those miles before the brakes had cooled down enough to give me some proper feeling again :D

Here's the video's, i've no idea what went wrong with the iPhone, but on some laps it is joining 2 laps into 1, and on others the G-force, MPH and Lap tracer goes haywire

Looked like an awesome day.

Yeh it was good fun, so nice to get a few laps in, without having to fix it between sessions :D

Was also nice having a few people come up to me between sessions asking what power the car is putting out, and looking shocked when I said it's only stage 2.

I did wonder if the owner of the mk1 was in here! Just realised I've been subscribed to your thread for a while haha.

It looked like an animal out there!

I have a few pictures of yours (and the silver mk2 if that's anybody here). Give me a shout if you'd like them emailed over some time. They're nothing fancy but might be nice to see.

That would be great, always love to see pics of mine on track.

What top mounts are you using?

Still on silver project for the moment, until I get a chance to swap them for powerflex.

Then send me the pair you have and I will run them lol
