My Track Toy

Featured Replies

Ok over the last few days / weeks i've been having serious thoughts of breaking the car, just wondering what people think the car is worth in bits though ?

The reason i'm thinking about it, is because I am feeling the need to move onto something rwd and as much as i'd love to keep the octy aswell, I really can only have 1 track toy :( (life is sooo unfair at times :D)

So come on guys, give me your thoughts on value in bits (not alot of point in trying to sell complete as octy's don't seem to command a strong pricetag at the best of times, let alone when half the car is missing already lol).

The amount of mods on your car you should get a good price just time consuming doing it this way.

Send us a pm if u strip it. Seems alot of these are being stripped atm. Suppose there worth more in bits tho

So last Monday I managed to get a place at the T5D5 MRG trackday at Castle Combe, which was on the Friday.

As nothing was broken on the last trackday I didn't think I would need to do much.

So I wrote my list of things to do before the trackday which was:

Swap from tyres around on the rims so the wrong n/s/f outer edge would become the o/s/f inner edge and would last longer
Oil & Filter change
Modify passenger seat mount to lower the seat the same as the drivers.

Change the brake fluid.

Nice an easy list and no mega rush to get it done.

I had already had a look at the pads after the last session on the previous trackday as smoke was poring off the n/s/f when I came back into the pits. There was about 3mm of pad left so I knew that I didn't need to worry for this trackday, but felt that I should order some more as there wouldn't be alot left by the end of friday, as there was no rush, I just selected the free economy delivery option from JJC Race & Rally.

So Wednesday I go and get the brake fluid and oil filter (already had oil) ready to change it on thursday (ATE Super Blue), and then headed over to change the tyres.

So I jack the car up, remove the n/s/f wheel and what do I find, yep thats right, fookin cv grease everywhere  cv boot torn open, but luckily the joint itself seemed to be ok as not all the grease was gone (just most of it).

So I swapped the tyres around on the rims (managed to scrape 1 of the rims badly as the tyre managed to reseal itself after I broke the bead, so I ended up fitting 1 of the tyres to the spare wheel as it was still freshly painted, and put the spare tyre on the scraped rim).

Then I got my spare driveshaft from the boot (still cable tied to the back panel from the last trackday), but when I look closely at it, I find a small nick in the rubber, from where it was flying around in the back of the car during the 1st session on the last trackday, so I had no option but to put a small dab of silicone sealer over the nick to stop it leaking.

Swapping the driveshaft seemed to be a biggest pain in the arse ever, I thought I had got it down to a fine art (after all i've done it a few times now), but it was fighting me all the way, I even had a new set of 6 bolts to use on the gearbox end, as the old bolts had been reused a few times the spines were starting to round slightly. So I put 2 of the new bolts in by hand and then realised they were a differnt spline size, so I swapped the T55 for a T50, and did them up, as soon as I nipped them up, the splines stripped which meant I couldn't do them up tight, they were only nipped, but it also meant I couldn't bloody take them out again either :x , needless to say I refitted 4 of the old bolts and left the 2 new ones in there, as I knew the car would be on a ramp the next morning having the brake fluid changed, so I would remove the 2 new (knackered) bolts and fit the 2 old ones then.

So tyres done, rim fooked, driveshaft swapped over, I had a good look at the brakes, and sure enough I had about 3mm of pad on the n/s/f, but on the o/s/f I had under 1mm left, reason being, cv grease all over the back of the n/s/f brake disc during last track session, hence smoke poring off the n/s, the very spongy brakes and mega brake fade, all the braking was being done on the o/s/f :D (that explains why it took over 30 mins on very gentle driving to even get a brake pedal on the way home).

So now i'm thinking this trackday is not going to happen, cv boot issue's as I don't know if the dab of silicon will work, I have no brake pads as my old ones were down to about 1.5mm which wouldn't be enough to last the day, my backup pads are just normal road pads, which would be good for about 2 corners of combe before they either faded or disintegrated completely.

Anyway Thursday morning, my new pads arrive :D (even though I didn't pay for next day delivery), which was a mega relief. So off I go to get the brake fluid changed. I bought 2 litres of Super Blue, which should be plenty, but once the power bleeder was hooked up, the old fluid was very pale blue and very airiated. Soon enough though nice fresh dark blue fluid was coming through the rears. It took a while but whilst it was flowing through. Then the front wheels came off and what do I find, yep you guessed it, fookin cv boot was split  :@ on the n/s again. Anyway I changed the front pads, and had those 2 new (knackered) driveshaft bolts removed and then when the fronts were bleed nicely it came off the ramp. Only to find there was NO brake pedal, I mean it was right at the bottom of the pedal, and worse still there wasn't much brake fluid left either. So the car went back on the ramp, the wheels came back off, and I opted to do it the old fashioned way of pumping the fluid through with the pedal, a little air came out, but the pedal didn't have full travel on the n/s/r & o/s/f circuit. So we figured there was air in the master, with that we gave that a quick bleed (pumping the pedal again) it had a massive amount of air in it, and once done the pedal was rock hard :D

So I paid up and left with my newly working brakes, and went off to buy a cv boot kit, then headed home to fit the new cv boot on the driveshaft I removed the day before, I didn't have anything to do up those stupid metal clips they supply though to hold the boot in place, so I just got a pair of thick cable ties and pulled them up as tight as possible. Then I jacked the car up and swapped the driveshafts over AGAIN.

Thankfully (or should I say luckily as I am REALLY sick of changing driveshafts on this car now), it didn't fight me at all, and everything went smoothly and I had it changed in less than half the time it took the day before.

Now that I had a working cv boot, and brakes and the tyres were done, I headed off to pickup my modified passenger seat frame, except when I got there, he hadn't finished it (well he has barely started it tbh), so whilst I was waiting around I did my oil change :D which was nice and straightforward. Finally the seat frame was finished, however he had done it differently to the drivers side, and his drill was flat so he couldn't finish re drilling the holes in it. So I got home with the seat frame, got my drill out (electric rather than battery) and then proceeded to blunt 2 drill bits, snap 3 more, so I ended up with 1 drill bit that worked, but it was too small, so my round holes ended up egg shaped, but good enough lol.

By the time this was all done, it was about 9.30pm so I didn't get time to wash the car before the trackday, but everything else was done :)

Friday morning, everything was fine, got to Combe with no issues, first session out on track, and the brakes were AWESOME the best they have ever been, I had sooo much confidence in them, even though the pads were not fully bedded in yet. But after 3 - 4 laps the pedal started to get inconsistent and after 5 laps I felt I had to go in and check everything was ok (I was fearing a split cv boot again). So into the paddock and I have a quick look at the brakes as I can see a little smoke coming off the fronts, on closer inspection there is brake fluid weeping out of the bleed nipples :(, so I had to jack it up and tighten all the bleed nipples (2 per front caliper, 1 on each rear and 2 on the master cylinder), needless to say it was a pain in the arse, but the cv boot was fine :D

Anyway with the bleed nipples tight and brake fluid being retained in the system, I got back out on track, sadly the brakes were not as good as they had been, the pedal wasn't anywhere near as consistent and I found myself pumping the pedal a few times throughout the day.

Brakes aside the car was going well, the 595 RS-R's though do not seem to like my driving style, they seemed to come and go a little with the grip levels, but it was bloody warm out there.

The only other hickup was when I took a passenger out in the car, I cut the 2nd chicane a bit tight and it kicked the backend of the car out quite violently (which was good fun), the downside was the passenger seat broke (well the frame anyway), not sure exactly where, but it was making some nasty noises and moving about a bit.

Anyway enough of the waffling, here are the vids from the day:

I didn't hear anyone slag the skoda's off (although I think I might have upset a subaru driver) lol

The car seemed to get a little bit of attention though :D

Wouldn't be surprised buddy yours in a animal!!!

Due to fat git in passenger seat ;-)

Was epic

I finished the seat off. Took some holding on I think we did 6-7 more laps with a completely loose seat.

I must remember to look at that before I do another trackday :D

We both know that I already know that.

But as it will be a while before I can do that, I thought there is no harm offering it as a complete car on the off chance.

Well after having a bit of a downer on the car for the last couple of months, due to an issue with the Brembo's (bleed nipple was weeping, so I removed it to replace with a new 1, and it stripped the threads in the caliper).

I figured the easiest way to sort it would be to just replace the calipers, and deal with it later, as I don't have a garage to put the car in, and it has goodridge hoses there is no easy way to clamp off the hoses whilst the caliper is away to be repaired.

So i found a new set online, and fitted them before the Combe action day in September, however these "great condition" brembo's turned out to be anything but.

The "almost new" discs were scrap, the fronts were as new, but the rears were solid with rust, with just a thin line in the middle of the disc nice and shiny, however it was about 3mm deep into the disc lol.

Anyway the cause of this was the shims had corrosion under them, which was holding the inside pads too tight, so that they couldn't move away from the discs.

I had no time to sort it before Combe, so used the M3 on that day (which different), but I did manage to get a partial refund due to the discs being fubar.

Anyway due to all the messing about sorting the M3 for track (changing brake pads, messing about swapping wheels over and then back again as they didn't fit propperly), I managed to get some dirt into an old cut in my knee which then got infected, causing my knee to swell up and make it pretty hard to walk, let alone work on the car.

So the Skoda sat there for another few weeks doing nothing and me not having much love for it either.

Then my knee started to get better finally, so I went out to the car, sorted the shims out (just bent them up, scrapped all the corrosion out and then bent them flat again), fitted my ds3000's which were now fitted much better and used my old discs (nothing wrong with them anyway).

I now had brakes that worked, although they needed bleeding properly.

With that I took the car and had both seat frames welded to the rails in the car, as they were mounted into the original sliders, there was some movement, so I had them welded to stop them moving about when cornering hard.

I also bleed the brakes fully again and now had a great pedal feel once more :D

So the car was now sorted, ready for ADI (Audi Driver International) at Combe on 11th October.

So I took a couple of road wheels with me to the track, as normally I drive down on the track wheels and hope there still legal to drive home with after, but as the 2 fronts were boarderline already I knew it wouldn't be an option this time.

I also took a trolley jack (first time ever, always used the crap scissor jack before), and 3 spare driveshafts lol.

The car was perfect on track, didn't skip a beat, and felt really planted.

I only did 4 sessions on the day, but I had some fun and now I have some love for the octy again :D

I had a good play with an Audi Quattro, and a couple of other cars.

I also managed to beat my previous best lap time set 15 months ago, on that day I was on almost new R888's, and did a time of 1:21.88, but at ADI 2014, with some pretty much bald 595RS-R's on the front, I managed a 1:21.50 followed by a 1:21.55 which I am very happy with.

The brakes were pretty consistant all day too which has to be a first too lol,

No driveshaft / cv boot failures either (it must be a miricale) lol.

There was a couple of casualty's on the day though, the passenger seat broke again, this time the seat runner managed to come away from the frame, not sure if the bolt snapped or if the rail itself has failed (I think the bolt has pulled through the rail but not had a chance to look at it yet), the other was my front Pastyboy black Skoda badge decided it couldn't live life in the fast lane anymore, and flew off somewhere between the Esses and Old Paddock bend lol.

Anyway enough typing, here are a couple of naff pics and some vids.
