BT Homehub - Data Usage

Featured Replies

Hi,

I have a bt homehub and last month we apparently used 85gb of broadband! We have a 40gb usage package and normally hover at around 35gb. This month so far we have used 39.5gb with a week or so to go!

I can see connected devices but is there something that allows me to see what device is using what data?

I would recommend the following;

Change the wireless password on your router

Run a full scan on all devices connected to your network (As these may be infected and you could be part of some ones botnet)

Download a free bandwidth monitor and choose the interface you will be using for the internet.

Its ok. Seems that my next door neightbours (who we allow access) have been using Now TV, Youtube etc almost constantly. They have apologised and didn't realise it downloaded/uploaded...lol.

lol.. I wouldn't let my neighbour use mine... They commit an offence using your internet & you will be the one in trouble.

Plus - You are giving them open access to anything on your network - For example Shares on your PC etc. Very dangerous.

I hate download caps. I have unlimited downloads but then BT only offered us unlimited due to the fact we can only just scrape 100 to 200 kb/sec in our area which is below their normal minimum tariff.

And yeah, stop letting them use your wifi, next thing you know people will be chucking extension leads over the fence and using 1 electicity bill...

I personally care alot about my computers security seeming as I have the drives shared over network....

How has your neighbour been using it? Or have you removed the wifi security?

Most prob shared the key.

Bin BT for a start. Go to another ISP with unlimited downloads or even a capped limit. BT conduct "traffic shaping" on your line. Most ISP's actually do this and it seriously can impede your broadband capabilities.

I did a lot of research a while back when with Tiscali and switched to ZEN to avoid this traffic shaping tactic. Im now with sky and am on their network so not through BT at all.

Traffic shaping is not illegal but a lot of ISP's will not want to tell you they do it. If you ask them they will admit it but they certainly dont like sharing this info. Its used to limit torrent file sharing so its intentions are legit but depending on how you use your broadband it can cripple your system at home.

Thankfully i no longer suffer this problem and get a steady 16mb/s download even at peak times. I know some Londoners etc will scoff at this figure but it spretty good for us up north and plenty fast enough for gaming and streaming HD etc.

I know people who get 16mb/s then get throttled back at peak times to around 1mb/.s which is dire.

If you have a capped download limit then you are less likely to be hampered with traffic sharing issues but its still worth checking.

Traffic shaping can cause havoc with online gaming as intermitintantly it will break the signal for a split second causing you to loose connection. This is the tool that is used to combat torrent sharing. Its a total pain in the arse.

I know the above long speel probably isnt relevant to your situation but BT certainly have a,lot of restrictions in place as part of their "fair useage policy" so you may get better perfromance with someone else. In fact i guarantee you could.

It's about BT, but not started by Nick,,,,,,,,,,,,,,what gives

Unless they're elderly, stupid or have been kept in a cellar for 10+ years, I'd say that explanation is bolox! Did they're eyes spin when they said it?

Re. the security thing, have you at least got userids/passwords on your main devices?

Wow, recommendation for sky broadband, I've never seen one and will likely never see one again. They sucked, constant downtime, well below the stated speed (and below the speed hit after an ISP switch) and crap customer service. I rest my case.

Cousin has just dropped Sky for those reasons. I know he's in the back of beyond but it's slower than dialup

Well, I have been with Sky for more than 2 years and never had a dropout or a throttled connection. I am on Sky unlimited using their kit and never have a problem. I can't comment on customer service as I have never needed to call them though.

The issue with Sky is usually when you have to run over BT's network because sky have no kit in the local exchange, this is notoriously bad and suffers the same issues of throttled connections etc. as its all managed by BT. If your exchange has Sky kit in, and you fully unbundle the service, then the only piece of BT you use is from your property to the exchange.

As for allowing neighbours on your network, I would never allow it there are just to many risks for which you as the line owner are liable.

Illegal music downloads,

Questionable adult material, etc. it is you as account holder that will end up in court, not your neighbour.

if you haven't yet set a security code for the home hub, now would be a good time to do so. BT HomeHubs can accept combinations of upper and lower case letters, numbers and special characters, ie *,^,&,$,%,£. I usually use special characters in a random combiation with lower and upper case letters. I think mine is ~ 16 digits long.

D'oh! Stupid site won't let me edit it. their, their, THEIR, not... THEY ARE, THEY'RE, THEY'RE.

no, it looks correct from here. It is they're. 'Their' would be possesive.

^ is correct, unless they are, they're. :)

This is exactly my point. If on skys network things run fine if through sky but on BT's network then BT's policies apply so there is a big difference. I asked all ISP if they conducted traffic shaping and there is very few who dont.

I will agree though that sky customer service is dire but luckily ive never once had to call them with broadband issues just TV issues.

If it's in your area someone was singing the praises of Virgin's cable service to me the other day. His kids were downloading gigs a day quite merrily.

Stay away from Virgin Media if you dont like Traffic Management. They are the worst for it! Advertise silly speeds like 60Mb however you only get this until you have reached you limit.

A lot of ISP's throttle back bandwidth at peaks times which is annoying. The worst kind of traffic shaping though is where they periodically kill your connection for a split second. They do this every few minutes. This specifically is what helps limit torrent file sharing as people who do this basically set up their computer to torrent stream then leave it. By killing the connection for a split second it is supposed to stop these torrent streams in their tracks and if your not there to restart the stream then the traffic shaping has succeeded.

What this also does is cause you to drop connection in an online game. Very annoying.

Throttled back bandwidth i could live with, although i dont as i hate that also but dropping the connection on purpose is a total pest for me as i geek it big style on my xbox.

There are ISP's who dont do either so you dont have to accept it, even if your on BT's network ZEN can sort you out. Best solution is to get off BT's network altogether i.e SKY, Virgin or similar although you will still need to check their fair useage policies relating to traffic shaping. SKY dont do it with me but it might vary from area to area around the country i dont know.

I don't get it, literally... They don't manage me ?? I've tried it just keeps on coming at full chat, maybe they have forgotten me !!

What speed you paying for?

Dont be fooled by downloading a bunch of data so your over limit them doing a speedtest as the speedtest will report same speeds. They traffic manage per protocol.

Full whack 100Mb, I'm talking nzb's 15 gb a time 2 or 3 at a time, anytime of day no problems.

I do go through phases though, nothing for a week or two, then a few in a row, then nothing for weeks. Wheter they think I'm ok like that ??

I do use SSL, if that makes any difference
