Clutch fails - flywheel damaged?

Featured Replies

A chap I work with has taken his golf into the dealer because the clutch was slipping. They have just phoned back and said that as well as the 400+ quid to do the clutch they now want another 610+ labour because the flywheel is damaged!

Thats a bill of over 1100 for a clutch!!!!!

It's a 1.8t golf GTI mk4

Anyone heard of this happening on an octy with the same engine?

It's normal to replace the flywheel at the same time as the clutch on 1.8T's or at least have the flywheel refaced.

On my Golf I had it done at the same time as a gearbox replacement. Cost was

If they have the clutch out then te fly is exposed so I can't see why they need another 600+labour...unless they have put it back together and forgotton / made a balls up. Fly is 80 to 100, least thats what I just paid for a re-faced one.

...Service manager and restore car to original form time at there expense time.

Clutch is a 4 hour job roughly. ;)

So it sounds like the flywheel being replaced is believable (though why leave it till the car is in bits before mentioning that) but the pricing varies a lot.

Looks like it's typical expensive VW main dealer charges

The VW dealer I dealt with told me the clutch and flywheel come together as a kit and they always replace both. Something is definetely wrong with how it's been handled and the price is way OTT. Is it definetely

Oh yes, it is very believeable. My clutch failed, got so hot that it disintegrated. In the process it actually warped / bent the flywheel :(

Luckily, I happened to have one on standby and fitted it along with a single mass flywheel :D

Well they insisted that a flywheel was needed , and as the car was half in bits it couldn't be taken elsewhere. Total bill - over
