What motor if buying 100k+ milage model

Featured Replies

Just wonder if it should be DSG / Manuel and is there any big difference between the diesel and petrol versions?

Right now I am looking at the 1.6 Diesel Greenline and 2.0 DSG 170bhp

well if your after economy the greenline is defo the best choice but If your after power the the 2.0 170 is the best bet, but the dsg will eat into MPG so the manual is also worth a look and don't forget the 140bhp 2.0 TDI. the petrol's also are good but from what I hear the 1.4 TSI is not the best power wise but never driven a petrol superb so can't say.

More than 100.000 miles...it has to be diesel, I'd say. I dont think the choice between Auto or Manual is as important...just depends which you prefer.

I am just thinking how is the realiability of DSG, should you stay clear of them on used cars (High repair costs, often failures, others issues)

I took delivery of a 2.0 se 140pd manual. It still feels nice and taut for a 100k mile car i'm very pleased with it after 1st 2k miles. I also tried a DSG but didn't like it. I've previously had a Fabia Vrs and the torque delivery of the 140 Superb feels pretty good in comparison even though its a much heavier car.

The differences are so minuscule you wouldn't know the difference...

The only factor to take into consideration is the reliability of high mileage boxes IMO...

+1

I would say Manual as it should be less prone to expesive problems at high mileages.

As for engine its your choice as neither are better than the other it all depends on how they have been looked after.

Over the years I have had some really good hih mileage petrol cars 1 had over 220,000 miles and a good half dozen with well over 160,000 miles.

Same with diesel.

My recent Octavia company cars have all hit 100,000 miles inside 2 years and the petrol and diesels have held up very well with no issues at all.

I had a taxi ride home last week and it was an Octavia diesel with DSG, driver informed me the first problem with the DSG has just started, a ticking noise when pulling away, it was not noticed by me.

So what eh, it had 243,000 miles on it!

Depends on the type of mileage you will be putting on it.

Personally I would not touch a DSG out of warranty, is is estimated 10% of DSG cars will have issues… not an issue whilst someone else is picking up the tab, it’s a different kettle of fish if the £1,500+ bill for the mechatronic replacement is coming from your pocket though.

Does anybody actually know of a terminal DSG box?

There is always plenty of opinions regarding the reliability, but has anybody actually got any hard fact??

It's a good question, don't see much here about DSG blowing up when 3 years old? I think DSG reliability gets questioned because of its complicated nature and "hence" the scary prices to be concerned about.

BTW my 3 years are up in March and "yes" DSG going wrong does indeed worry me.

My understanding - and it's not from personal experience so I'm happy to be corrected - is that most problems involved the 7-speed dsg fitted to petrol cars. The 6-speed dsg fitted on diesels is apparently very reliable.

nope, colin told me he'd chatted to a skoda "master tech" who said the 7 -speed dry clutch is the most reliable DSG made so far, absolutley NO inherent problems, often do 200k before things start showing up.....

+1 the later 7 speed seems to be much improved over the 6 speed.

As I said guys - happy to be corrected - Correction noted!

Seen a few complaining about juddering with the 7-speed?

Just swapped my Occy with 2.0TDI & DSG at 172k. It had 103k when I bought it. Ran faultlessly, mind I had it serviced at 10k intervals.
