Hi

Have never owned a Skoda before.

But after test driven the 1st Fabia built by VW years ago - always wanted a Skoda.

Plus Skoda reliability seems better thn the rest of VAG and dealer customer service seems excellent!

My current car is a Subaru Legacy 3000cc 242BHP but running on LPG so just affordable at the mo.

Not exactly wot spec Octavia i am after, but minimum the following:

- have about £5-6k

- automatic (DSG better? Reliable? Expensive to repair/replace?)

- diesel

Did wanted a 4x4 (since my 4x4 Subaru has been excellent in snow with summer tyres). But i think i can get by with a set of winter tyres for a 2wheel drive Octavia.

Really fancy the vRS to match the Scooby performance, but as money is tight and i do like my creature comforts would the L&K be a gud option (satnav, park sensors etc)?

But i really ned advice on which particular model/trim?

Some say CR is better thn PD (but i cant stretch to a 2009/10 model)?

Some say 1.9 more reliable thn 2.0 PD?

Which one has no PFD?

Sorry for my long 1st post!

And Happy NY everyone :-)

  • You could say that about any engine/gearbox in any car. The DSG is a fine gearbox, I have 530,000kms on mine and my car is remapped to 400nm of torque since it was two weeks old. Nothing would ever g

  • Start it up from cold and open the drivers window so you can hear the engine clearly. With your foot on the brake, move the selector from P to R while listening carefully for any change of noise from

  • Too many anomalies with that car to even consider it. Its cheap for a reason. There are plenty of VRS's and L&K's out there, so no point risking it with this one.

If you are looking for an L&K then you have 2 options engine wise on a later model and that is 2.0 PD or 1.8TSI. The DSG is a good box but make sure when you test drive that it operates nice and smooth as repair/replacement can be quite expensive. The two engines have 2 different gearboxes, the diesel has a 6 speed wet clutch design which is the older but stronger box, then the 7 speed in the petrol as that is limited by the torque input it can handle.

I do believe early ones could be had with the 1.9 PD engine which as everyone knows can go on forever if treated right. None of the engines will have a DPF fitted, at that age it was only the vRS PD that had the DPF fitted.

The L&K doesn't have satnav fitted as standard but it does have a lot of other goodies, mine does have it fitted as I think it was one of the last ordered by Skoda UK for stock before the facelift came out and didn't sell until April '09 as it would have been quite expensive. The main choice is between light grey leather with light grey door inserts or black alcantara/leather with black door inserts.

Welcome to Briskoda and hope you find what you are looking for.

If you can find a 2.0Tdi DSG L&K for the money you have, make sure it has a full service history and you will have a cracking car. Get it remapped and you will be surprised how much grunt your little Diesel will have,

If your benchmark for "excellent in snow" is a car fitted with summer tyres, you will be blown away by the performance of ANY car fitted with proper rubber. The four wheel drive in your Subaru helps you get going, but it doesn't do anything for the somewhat important "stopping and turning" part. :) "Getting by" would be a huge understatement.

Hi CountryBoy

Thks for the detailed advice.

I think i would be happy with a older/slower 1.9TDI if it is more reliable and more MPG but with 140bhp to still have some grunt.

Wot year/price should i be looking at for £5-6k?

No remapping -lol

Need to keep the insurance down!

Hi Perc

Totally agree!

I followed where Range Rovers only go uphill ...

... But downhill - forget it! LOL

£1,400 for a service sounds steep but if it includes replacing the brake discs and pads all round then I wouldn't be at all surprised, I am looking to get mine serviced in April next year with an independant, major service, cambelt with waterpump, DSG oil and filter change, brake fluid change. Am getting figures in for in between £750 to £880 at Skoda. At least if he has had the major work done then it won't need it for a while, the DSG box is every 4 years along with the cambelt, check when the cambelt was done last.

If it has been a company car pounding up and down the motorways and serivced religiously then it should be a little cracker, the best colour too in my opinion, just not too sure about the upholstery, mine has the black alcantara option.

The sat nav he has fitted is an aftermarket Kenwood unit and not OEM, I have no experience of them but should be just fine ,

51 MPG average from a 2.0 TDI DSG, wish mine got near to that, I think the best average I have had on motorway work is around the 44 MPG mark, then again it "only" has 29,000 miles on the clock.

A nice set of winter tyres on steel wheels should do you just fine on that.

A 1.9 TDI has only 105bhp so would need a remap to get to the 140bhp you are looking for.

Ian

Just had a closer look and I could be wrong about the satnav, it could well be a "Nexus" unit which is a genuine VW group product but an earlier generation than the Columbus fitted to my car.

Thks CountryBoy!

With all those included (discs/pads etc) - thn £1k+ sounds reasonable! :-)

1.9 TDI only has 105bhp :-(

Thn is it the 2.0 TDI with options of 140 and 170?

Yes.

Deffo will get a set of cheap rims / tyres for winter!

Ok.

Not want the 1.9TDI now since only 105bhp.

2.0 TDI 140/170 L&K it is!

Still no DPF?

No cam chain?

Thinking ahead..

1. What rim size are the 2.0 TDIs?

2. Part worn winter tyres ok?

3. Anywhere to source OEM latest satnav maps

4. Wot to look for whn viewing 2.0 TDI (bar usual checks)?

Thks all again.

PS: Am hoping to sell by Scoob by Feb

- so might be a rush to buy a L&K immediate after!!

The TDI will be 140 bhp, the 170 is for the vRS only, they will have a cambelt fitted and it is recommended to change the water pump at the same time as the genuine article only has plastic fins and to preempt any problems it is better to change at the same time as cambelt because you have to remove the belt to get to the pump, only adds a small cost.

It was only the vRS and Scout that had a DPF fitted at that age, the Scout having a slightly different engine to the other 2.0 TDI cars, mine doesn't have the DPF and it is a late built car.

The L&K has 17" rims as standard on the later cars, that is what is fitted to the one on ebay, earlier ones had the same 16" wheels as the Elegance.

You can get 15" or 16" wheels to fit the L&K, vRS can only get away with 16" due to bigger brakes (312mm as opposed to 288mm) As long as the wheels have a PCD of 5x112, an offset of 35 to 50, and the correct rim width to match the tyre being used then you should be fine. Plenty of examples on ebay to give you an idea.

The are quite a few people on the internet advertising nav maps but you will have to make sure they are correct for your car, they will be different between the Nexus/MFD2 fitted to the car shown on ebay and the Columbus/MFD3, the later one fitted to my car.

Not sure of obvious things to look for on the 2.0 TDi 140 but I am sure there are wiser people on here who will gladly tell you what to look for.

Thks Ian!

L&K 2.0 TDI 140bhp it is!

Engine good upto 200k.

Ensure cam belt everything change every 4 yrs!

Not a car-mechanical-type person, so will do more research on winter rim sizes (u lost me already with those PCD/offsets already LOL).

But will shop for winter rims/tyres after winter - whn demand and prices cheaper?

Is there anythingelse the Octavia in general (or specific to the 2.0 TDI) is prone to?

Theres this debate about diesel vs petrol on another thread here plus no advantage in using premium fuel.

Normal diesel ok on the 140bhp?

Recommended super diesel for 170bhp?

Yep, that is an earlier one, it has the beige interior with the whole door cap in the same upholstery colour instead of the light grey with the small light colour insert by the handle and window switches, the L&K badge is on the boot and not on the front wings and the alloys are the smaller 16" ones like fitted to the Elegance.

55 MPG from a 2L TDI DSG, humm! Pity there is no underbonnet pic, you'd be able to tell from that.

I hope that link works, will give you an idea what I am on about with offset and PCD.

Ian

Just had a look at the ad on ebay for the 2006, the 55 MPG is the extra urban official consumption form the government tests, expect around 45 MPG in real life.

Ian

Was very unusual to see front sensors and elec sunroof on these when I was looking back in march, nice spec that and reasonable price. Agree with Ian on the 55 mpg figure though, and it is early 06 so nearly 7 years old.

No remapping -lol

Need to keep the insurance down!

Even without a remap, the combination of the DSG box and 320nm(standard) will put a huge grin on your face. It will also easily return 50mpg.

Go on............spoil yourself.

Thks Ian again.

Hmm.. Never saw these PCD/offset specs on ebay.

So if the seller dont say (octavia) or not kno the PCD/offset figures - anyway i can find out before i buy?

Ian / Adam

So its not just Octavia 1/2/3?

Wer there facelifts?

And how do i spot em?

Upto 2004 (sept)? Mk 1?

Upto 2009 (mar)? Mk 2?

I used to have a 115bhp 2002 focus (manual)

And 2006 163bhp 2006 120d (auto)

Yes - i do missed the amazing torque below :-)

Would love a petrol or diesel vRS - but more worry abt insurance thn mpg :-(

Wot are the realistc mpg on the TDI vRS compared with the 140bhp?

And road tax and insurance grp?

Dont think parkers.co.uk are thg reliable...

Ian

I think that is a heavily spec'd Elegance model. I don't think the L&K was available in 2006, it wasn't in early 2006(Ireland)

It's more complicated as the mk1 and mk2 overlapped, although not sure mk1 and mk2 l&ks overlapped.

There was a mk2 facelift around early 2009, so you are looking at mk2 pre facelifts here. You'll be needing a bit more outlay for an fl car, which look a little more severe at the front and for the l&k, folding mirrors were standard I believe.

Within the pre facelift series of l&k there were a few cosmetic changes, later ones had the newer touchscreen stereos/satnav for example.

Having looked at a few on eBay...

...i do like the 2006 model :-)

Smaller 16" uncool - but cheaper and more mpg.

I like both front/rear parking sensors

And the gorgeous beige interior leather (including gear stick)!

I m showing my age now arent now?

Or my weird side - lol

on a serious level both the above links meet my budgets.

But hoping for lower mileage at the mo.

A 2007 for £8k is on sale on ebay from doncaster skoda with only 31k?

Not worth is it?

I paid less than that for a late 2008 fully loaded in march this year. With full dealer service history and new cambelt. Higher miles but that one in Doncaster seems a little steep in comparison to the others around.

Having said that the key is getting the right motor for you at an affordable price. And obviously they all look good in piccies, so test driving is crucial, and checking the history and ownership etc

Cheers Adam!

Mostly bought nonJap cars from dealers.

Been lucky with buying Jap cars privately and rarely had problems.

So my 1st time buying not from dealer - so am a bit cautious.
