Afraid I don't know about the dsg, as I have a manual, but someone will know.

The Maxidot display shows current gear and/or transmission mode. P, R, 3, D7, S4 etc in the top right corner. Maxidot is Skoda speak for the optional upgraded trip computer display. Not sure if the standard display has it. But you'd think that a L&K spec car would come with Maxidot, and it's a feature I wouldn't want to be without.

The Maxidot display also shows audio information, phone etc (all depending on what options your car has, of course) and gives you the ability to tweak some settings that you'd need diagnostic software (VCDS) to do otherwise.

And I would be very surprised if there was a single DSG equipped VAG car without hill hold. It's a crucial feature since it's the only thing keeping you from rolling backwards on hills. A normal automatic has the torque converter and a manual car has a clutch pedal. DSG has neither of those things.

A Smart Fortwo I drove once didn't have hill hold. Not sure if it was broken or if it just didn't exist in the car, but it made hill starts annoyingly tricky. You had to left foot brake or hold the car with the handbrake, and that's just stupid.

Strange. I couldn't imagine driving DSG without it.

You could say that about any engine/gearbox in any car. The DSG is a fine gearbox, I have 530,000kms on mine and my car is remapped to 400nm of torque since it was two weeks old.

Nothing would ever get bought/sold if we all thought major components where going to randomly fail.

Mine is a jul 2011, after 18,000 gentle miles in a 1.2 tsi, it has fail and a new unit is to be fitted after new year. is the electronic clutch assembly

chan110 when you test drive a DSG it should be smooth and under normal driving you shouldnt know the car has change gear, the mechcanic during testing took my car to a hill start, it jerk a little when it should be so smooth. if you dont know dsg you wouldnt know there was a fault in mine. just test drive a new one and see how smooth it is so you will know what to expect

It's only natural to find people with problems on forums like these. People don't hang around all day making threads telling everyone that their car still works fine. :)

My point was..........anything can fail...........anything. Thats why you have a warranty. Would it stop you buying another DSG equipped car ?? They are a very reliable gearbox but of course you will get the odd failure out of the thousands that are produced.

You won't get paddles on the L&K and I believe they were an option on the vRS. As has been alluded to in other topics the hill hold is standard on the L&K but an option on the vRS. The easy way to check is stop on a hill, with your foot on the brakes, release and immediately re-apply, if you have hill hold then the pedal will be hard and the car not move, if not then the car will start to roll back when you release the brake. Also, NEVER hold a DSG equipped car on the handbrake with it in gear as the car will try to engage the clutches and pull away, resulting in premature wear.

And if it does - its just unfortunate (unlike Land Rovers ;-) )

Hmmm why no standard paddle shift on vRS (isnt tht the whole point of a sports car - in control and fast)?

So the internet talk of the 1st generation DSG problems is a myth?

I still cant tell the difference btw the different variants of DSG (pros/cons)

There are two types of DSG available in the Octavia II. The 1.2, 1.4 and 1.8 TSI as well as the 1.6 TDI gets a 7 speed dry-clutch box. The 2.0TDI and 2.0 TFSI gets a 6 speed wet clutch box, because of the higher torque.

So all vRS'es have the "wet" box.

March 2010. Probably get someone disagreeing with me but the CR isn't that noisy.

Probably not supercharged, it's just a turbo. The drivetrain is a perfect fit for the car, IMO. 122hp is of course nothing compared to a vRS but the flat torque curve coupled with the 7 speed dsg is wonderful for a daily driver. And it is indeed very quiet, and smooth. Perhaps too quiet, when you open it up.

I have one just like it, altough 2012. I like the interior, mine's the plebian spec black on black with silver trim and this looks so much nicer. Shame it doesn't have xenons though.

Not sure i can stretch the Skoda salesman to 3 test drives?

Maybe i try 2 separate dealers?

My current car is petrol (since i wanted to get away from my last diesel clatter and potential turbo blown for the age of the car).

But diesel seems to be the way for performance plus low tax higher mpg.

But i will have a test drive to see if the 1.4 have enough grunt
