Newbie: Looking to buy L&K (DSG)

Featured Replies

Try and take someone with you who knows a bit, and make a list of checks for the viewing. Helps a lot as you forget when confronted with all the goodies on show!!

  • Too many anomalies with that car to even consider it. Its cheap for a reason. There are plenty of VRS's and L&K's out there, so no point risking it with this one.

Thks Ian again.

Hmm.. Never saw these PCD/offset specs on ebay.

So if the seller dont say (octavia) or not kno the PCD/offset figures - anyway i can find out before i buy?

Ian / Adam

So its not just Octavia 1/2/3?

Wer there facelifts?

And how do i spot em?

Upto 2004 (sept)? Mk 1?

Upto 2009 (mar)? Mk 2?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/%C5%A0koda_Octavia

Mk 1 was the early cars with more rectangular headlamps, from 1998 to about 2004/5

Mk2 was the next generation with headlamps not so high on the outer edge than the inner edge, 2005 to 2009

Mk2 facelift had headlamps which curved round up into the wings 2009 to 2012

Hopefully the link above for Wikipedia will explain all you need.

K.Young, that is definitely an L&K, if you look at the picture square on from the rear you can see the L&K badge underneath the Octavia badge and the spec is consistant with what you would have expected from an L&K in that period.

Ian

I can see the badge in the picture, how hard is it to get a badge ?? Are they not Elegance wheels ? In Ireland, the sound system came as standard on the L&K. As I said we may not have got the L&K model until the 17" wheel/grey interior version.

Either way,its a well spec'd car.

Yes it may be easy to get a badge but why? A vRS badge maybe. I did say in post 11 that the earlier ones had the same wheels as the Elegance until the 17" Sputnik wheels were introduced in about 2007 along with the grey leather, and black alcantara to replace black leather, It could well be that you guys in Ireland never got it until the revised version was introduced.

Ian

+1 def an l&k, been around since at least 2005 in mk2 colours

I feel so cheated, poor little Ireland getting short changed again

That makes perfect sense to me Ian,we only got the model with the grey interior and Sputnik wheels and we didn't even get the black alcantra option.

Looks like bluvrs2's old motor to me - could be wrong though.

Not sure if same car.

The price / mileage differ.

Plus BluevRS2 car is sold now.

Dan - thks for your reply.

Just remember if dsg goes its around £2000 to repair/replace

You could say that about any engine/gearbox in any car. The DSG is a fine gearbox, I have 530,000kms on mine and my car is remapped to 400nm of torque since it was two weeks old.

Nothing would ever get bought/sold if we all thought major components where going to randomly fail.

Ur DSG done 330,000miles without a fault?

The 6 speed box on the TDI's (1.9/2.0) is probably the safer bet,its been around longer and they pretty much have it right now. If you are buying one just make sure it comes with a history of regular oil/filter service.

It is designed to last as long as the car and "I think" VAG consider 400,000kms to be a reasonable life span for a modern car.

Ur DSG done 330,000miles without a fault?

It sure has.

It threw a hissy fit "once" got stuck in first but reset itself after about an hour parked up with the engine off, that was about 100,000kms ago.

Buy one and enjoy it, who knows what tomorrow may bring.

You should test drive a vRS and a L&K to help you decide.

vRS doesn't have all the toys (it does have quite a few), but it handles better and goes faster.

L&K has loads of toys, isn't quite as fast or sharp handling (although not bad), but this makes it a more comfortable ride.

Depends what you want really.

Don't worry about the DSG. Just make sure it works properly on the test drive.....if it does, the chances are it'll never give you any problems.

Thks Booke23!

Really want the TDI vRS.

But one of those toys vs less toys.

And economy vs fun-factor decisions :-(

How do i use / test the DSG?

Start it up from cold and open the drivers window so you can hear the engine clearly. With your foot on the brake, move the selector from P to R while listening carefully for any change of noise from the engine. If there is a faint rattle noise in P or N which stops when it is in D or R (or S) then this is likely to be the beginnings of DMF failure.

Put it in D and drive off. Take note of how it moves away....should be smooth, without any pulsing of the clutch.

Make sure it changes up into all 6 gears as you accelerate. The gear changes should be instant and produce no lurching whatsoever.

Then find a moderate hill, stop on it and drive off. You will need handbrake/footbrake to hold it on a hill (it does not have a torque converter) but it should pull away smoothly and progressively as you open the throttle. If you can do, the same in reverse.

Essentially, If you don't notice the DSG changing gears etc then it's working properly.

You will need handbrake/footbrake to hold it on a hill (it does not have a torque converter)

I thought all DSG cars had hill hold? I know mine does.
