PID CAN bus connection to android - possible?

Featured Replies

Does anyone know if it is possible to connect any other devices to the PID dash connection? I am interest in taking the CAN bus into an android device.

Sounds like a cool project! I can't help you with your question, but I have some experience with CAN bus, embedded systems and want to learn more about Android development, so I hope you keep us updated, and maybe I can help you later :)

Would it not just be easier to get a bluetooth adapter to plug into the car.

I'm sorry, but what is a "PID dash connection"???

It's the little navigation/entertainment device available in the Citigo. Connects up via a connector in the middle of the dash.

I've thought about that too although I wouldn't know how to even start going about it. Seeing as the PID is proprietary I'd say no, however there are plenty of blue tooth OBDII readers on eBay that you could stick in to the diagnostic port on the car for use with apps like Torque. I think that we'll probably be seeing cars with Android tablets in very soon. Parrot has a new range out soon and Hyundai/Kia have signed some sort of deal with Google recently.

Yes navigon missed the boat sticking with the windows platform

Although if it did have android you would never need to buy maps again

i Would love to build a custom ROM for the pid

I thought most satnav units use WinCE -the PID is a modified version of one of Navigon's already existing units. it's a handy device to have, but I don't think they put a huge amount of effort in to it. It would be a lovely thought that WV/Skoda might do a modified dock with a micro USB connection on it that would allow you to connect your own devices...I can dream on, me thinks.

Sat Nov manufacturers will use windows and not android for the simple fact

Google maps will wipe the floor with there business model

Never pay for updates

Plus ROM builders myself included if given access to the info from the car could build some amazing features

With android being license free the coat would be negligible and get a custom ROM tailored to their own branding

Even on other models with inbuilt screens

This my friends is the future

My nexus via google now tells me when to leave for work to get there avoiding traffic or informing me to leave earlier if its unavoidable all from monitoring where I live and work

Google Now is great, but don't you think that some people will find it all a bit creepy Google having that much information about your personal habits. Google maps requires a data connection (I know you can cache in advance) but not everyone wants to get a data plan for their car (you certainly shouldn't have to), sure you could use tethering but most mobile operators seem to regard that as a heinous crime -not that it's ever stopped me.

The architecture for most stand alone sat nav units was around long before Android, there's lot's of re-hashing and small developments but comparatively very little has changed in the last 10 years.

On a side note it's common knowledge that Microsoft earn more money from Google via patent licensing for Android than they do from their own phone operating systems

Yes, IMHO this would be the only way of really taking advantage of the "detachability". I would rather have a permanently built-in unit (no risk of theft) than the current PID. The docking system would be great, however, if I could connect my Android phone (or an iPhone/Windows) and use that as the PID. If Skoda put some resources into developing a good app, I would be happy to pay for it.
