first long journey in the citygo, review of 450 miles this weekend

Featured Replies

ok, we did the first long journey in the citygo this weekend to the midlands meet, as there wasn't a drive I left the vRS at home, and in the interests of economy we took ash's citygo, plus people want to see it at meets, so we did :)

general: it amazes me how far the city car has come, older citycar's I would never volunteer to do a long motorway journey in, but this is comfortable, with a smooth ride, not jiggle and a suprisingly responsive throttle at high speed, you can accelerate to pass things at motorway speeds that you wouldn't normally think possible in a city car (ours is the 60PS) very usabale for long journeys. The seats are comfortable. its quiet.

bad points... I cant rest my right elbow like I can in the vRS, its either too high (window) or too low (door pull) you have to keep your hands driving instructor style on the wheel, making 4 hours rather tiring..

also, it badly needs a footrest! in the vRS I have a nice alloy foot rest at a nice hight making it very comfortable on long journeys... there is room in the citygo's footwell, but I couldn't get my leg comfy, and started aching there too... if it was my car I'd find and fit a footrest, but as the car will mostly be used to drive to work for ash (4 miles either way!) its not ness for this car

fuel economy... on the way there I was "making progress" to get there before rush hour, so I was "going with the flow" in the outside lane, not really any thought for fuel economy at all, just "progress" .. this is the result (95 RON fuel) 54.5 MPG:

I was happy with that......

the way home was more relaxed, we didn't fill the car all the way up, I reccon we could get 500 miles from its tiny tank, check the pic, we covered 226 miles with 190 mles left in range, and the tank wasn't full!!

we didnt speed at all, and stayed at the speed limits (By GPS the citygo's speedo reads 5 mph fast at 70 mph , so this journey was done mostly at an indicated 75 mph) we made 57.7 mpg

not bad, but not a vast improvement on the fast drive ;) I noticed in the fuel cap it mentions super unleaded, we are going to try that next time we do the same journey to see in the mpg improvement is worth the money (It is in the vRS)

media/satnav... we havent really set it up how we like yet, seems a little complicated.. I added my phone to the bluetooth, and although I recieved a phone call, and simply "spoke to the car" without touching anything (so the hands free works perfectly) I had the speed camera app running on my phone, and it kept stopping the music everytime it noticed a camera, presumably to "speak" over the music to warn me, but not sound came out, and the CD wouldn't reset without pressing the button ... hhhmmm maybe it doesn't like iphones.....

we have the upgraded stereo, extra speakers ect... I played an MP3 disc on random, and it worked well, and the sound quality and adjustment was excellent! worth adding the upgraded stereo if you are buying, very happy with that!

the satnav was set on "fastest route" it took us on a wild diversion around birmingham on the way there, but straight back up the M6 on the way home (less miles) I assume there was a que and it diverted us to miss it..... not sure if it was faster... its now set on "optimum" route, will will still divert you from standing traffic, but wont send you too far off course! I think this is the best option. I prefere the womans voice to the mans

overall the PID is a really cool peice of kit, only problem was it not working properly with an iphone app.....

looks, we cleaned it up well for the meet

I have loads more pics, but will post them in the pics thread soon ;)(or the west midlands meet thread)

handling, I pushed it for the first time, (ash doesn't push it ) noted, it has winters on and it was 12 celcius! :o but we found the limits (safely) which are quite high with 185/55/15 tyres on (even winters on a warm day!) and the ESP is more noticable ind intrusive than on the vRS, this is (I assume) down to the short wheelbase, we had a bit of wash out understeer, and the ESP was VERY positive, at twitching the inside rear wheel brake, and twisting us back on-line ;) as if to say "behave!" lol..... very safe

overall I'm VERY impressed, its a fun car to drive, can be used for long journeys, is economical, the kit is cool.. very nice

note: at the meet we tested the citysafe extensively, I'll post a new thread with the vids and results

I mentioned the footrest after I did 2000 miles in a month.

That and a bit of reach adjustment on the steering wheel would make it a good all round car for the City and long runs IMO, provided there are only one or two of you.

another think I missed out, I'm quite short, and the seatbelt cuts my neck... could do with hight adjustment! (ash is looking at seatbeld pads...)

And I agree with reach adjustment, steering wheel needs to move into the dash a bit for me ;)

Do you have the 3 door? (edit, watched the Citysafe vid and see you do)

If so I can understand that, the belt pivot is quite far back.

That is one of the main reasons the work car is a 5 door, even though we have no plans to have people in the back.

The B post is a lot further forward, so the seat belt is in a better position and doesn't press on your shoulder or cut into your neck.

Plus, unlike the Fabia mkII and most other cars, the Citigo 5 door belt pivot is hidden in the post, so it's flat, there is no big lump on the B post to whack your head on during a side impact.

(if you are a bit taller and sit further back - I am 6'2" so it would be next to my head)

Horses for courses, but for running around and car park visits I find the seat belt location and smaller doors better on the 5 door.

You don't get the problem with a five point harness ;)

Seriously, it is a bit of a stretch to reach the belt on the 3 door but being quite tall the seat is quite far back and the pillar mounting is about the right height for me.

I also found the pen holder in the glovebox on the journey back :) currently having a look at some personalised seat belt pads for the front .

You know i was just about to ask what the verdict of citigo on the Mway was.. ;)

This is where it might be worth a trip to VW/Seat dealers to have a poke around their equivalent cars to see if theres any extra parts on those to pilfer for the Skoda.

additional: I would like the green dipped healights icon when you have your liughts on..... not included :(

plus no warning light when you disable citysafe (it was very foggy on the way home) So you have to remember if its on or off!

it is very quick but in all fairness i was in 5th ;)

PMSL... I'm sure you could kick our ass under different circumstances ;)

The Citigo will top out at 110mph on the flat, so it's not who is fastest, it's who wants to take more risk with their license.

I still find the way it cruises at 70mph(ish) impressive for what is effectively a cheap city car.

we wern't going fast boss, just accelerating up to the speed limit :p

when he said 5th we were about 40 mph.... I was probably in 2nd at the time!

It wasn't a criticism, it was a fact. :)

That's what they do.

besides the PID says "BEWARE" if you misbehave! lol...

Yes, but you had a much better engine to listen to.

In that situation I'd have been somewhere between 5-6k rpm. :D

Totally agree about the sound upgrade, it's certainly worth the extra £100.

We have about 25gb of music on a micro SD card in the PID and leave it on mix, which just plays tracks at random.

PS, for the mix function to work correctly you need a single track in the root of the card (at the same level as all the folders named after artists).

Play that track then hit Mix, after that it will play files at random across the whole list.

Hitting mix within an artist or album folder will only play random files from within that location.

thanks for the info, useful to "make" mp3 discs :) because its my partners car (and I rarely drive it) we decided I'd get an 8 gig card and put my own mix on it for the times I drive it

Good info thank you.

Considering a change and the citygo is on the list. Mainly as I've used about 3 tanks of fuel in the superb since June.

Thank you for sharing the m-way experince. Think I'll still have to borrow swmbo'd estate for trips to Scotland for climbing though :(

I have had 68 mpg on my normal A-road commute, but I'm usually in my own car for that!

we bought it from bickertons sheffield colin ;)

Exactly the same as the bolero.

Do you find that Mix tends to play 2 or 3 tracks from the same artist, one after the other, and not necessarily from the same album?

No not really, we have the same setup in the Yeti with exactly the same music, both play random, but there does seem to be themes where over a given period some artists / bands appear more frequently. We had a spate of Damien Rice for a while, but as randomisers go both systems seem pretty good.

There is an argument in computing that there is no such thing as truly random.

What I have noticed is that if you choose to go back, back, back it seems to forget what it played 3 tracks ago, and reverts to music in the current folder. Going forward just jumps to a new random track.

That reminds me of another quirk.

If you skip a track for a particular artist, ours seems to want to force the issue by trying to play that artist as soon as it can.

Skip again and it gets really stroppy and tries to play 2 in a row :giggle:

Chaos theory rules ;)

Going back on topic re MPG. I find the first half of the tank of fuel, if it's accurate seems to get me more MPG than the last half of fuel, if you follow. In other words it seems to go down quicker after you have past the half full marker.

Not restricted to the Citigo this either, I noticed this happened in my last diesel car. And the gauge hardly moves in the first 60-70 miles when starting with a full tank.

yeah, just like my fabia, it stays on full for a while then drops at different rates..... my theory is its probably just the shape of the tank! i.e. different volumes for the same drop in the indicator ....
