Using mobile signal for internet on netbook?

Featured Replies

Hello - As usual, Mr non-IT tech here..... Just wondering. I have a netbook, and was wondering if whilst out on the move, can I somehow use my mobile phone's data package as a facility for the netbook to access the internet? :)

I'm thinking about when I go out to do live mapping, as it would be handy to be able to send my mapper all the logs over the net, whilst pulled into a layby on my favourite stretch of road for this purpose, rather than drive 3 or 4 miles home, send it, get new map, drive out again, etc. :)

My new Xperia T's contract has a much bigger data allowance too, which is handy,

Your phone should support tethering however it will be down to the package with your phone company if this is enabled.

Yeah, no idea on that :D Its on (or will be when package switch occurs) on Panther 26.

Cash is in the post. Spot on! Managed to setup a network and get my home PC to see it. Thanks. Same should work out on the road too, so don't even need the USB cable.

Yes no cable required so in all fairness really that should only be £15!

Its quite a handy feature. Alas windows phone 7.5 only supports it via WiFi when 2 of the devices I would want to use it with don't have WiFi. But I'm on pay as you go and never have credit so doesn't matter too much. My old android handset is from before the tethering option was added too, could reflash it with cyanogenmod or something though to get the usual Bluetooth and USB options back.

WiFi dongles are cheap as.

Don't send cash in the post....use a postal order as its MUCH safer

On Panther 26, you only get 750MB of data. Keep this in mind, so that means no iPlayer or Youtube or other streaming media on the netbook whilst connected to your phone otherwise the allowance will go very quickly and you'll incur excess data charges. The mobile version of these are optimised for smartphones so use less data, unlike the full version on PC's.

Yeah - I won't be using it as a streaming tool - just sending CSV logs (approx 20 to 30kb a tme), and receiving 512kb flash files, and probably using an online chat program to discuss the performance with the mapper. Just saves me doing that all at home.
