Can anybody tell me the correct size if brake disk for the front 1.9 tdi 56 plate, not sure if itd 280mm or 288mm?

Stick your number plate into Eurocarparts website and they'll give you the sizes.

It gives you three different sizes, has anybody changed their front brake discs on a 56 plate 1.9 tdi?

My 56 plate 2ltr PD140 were 288, now upgraded to 312. The only way to be certain of yours is to whip a wheel off and measure - a cold 10 minutes but could save a time consuming mistake.

Cheers octavia5 ill do that after work!!!

If you can see FS III embossed in the metal of the caliper it will be 280mm. (You can see it without taking the wheel off usually)

I'd guess it is those, but you'll need to confirm.

The 2.0 usually has 288 or 312mm on the vRS and the 1.9 usually has FS III (280mm).

Yes, to 312.

Yes, to 312.

If you can change them to 312mm without too much effort on a 1.9, then they'll probably have been 288 to start with.

Is this a straight swop or is some modding required?

NOTE this is applicable to cars with 288mm brakes as standard only

All you need are a pair of Caliper Carriers off a Mk2 VRS or Golf GTI which have 312 discs as standard and a new pair of 312 discs (new pads also recommended). The actual calipers are the same on both 288 and 312 disc'd cars.

You need the right tools but the change is quite straightforward, removed the old discs and carriers and refit the new ones, 1.5 hours first side. 1 hour the second side (you know what you are doing.

There is a guide on here somewhere .

I assume for the 1,9 the calipers are different and therefore you need the caliper as well?

I orginally had the 288 brakes. These faded to a stinking, smoking, pedal less scary thing in the Alps. A log wait restored most but not all effectiveness.

At home a bit of investigation showed I had the integrated caliper carriers. So I needed new hubs too, as well as discs and the carrier. I came across a breaker down south who had a brand new Scirroco with only 108 miles but with the side stoved in. The deal was £200 for both hubs, discs, calipers, pads and carriers including carriage. All arrived very promptly, although the driver was adamant they weighed more than the 20kg max. Well over I would say! (looking for a set of Porsche 996 calipers for the NQSBBK mod).

Discs had a faint skein of oxide - they had obviously not been left out in the rain. All fitted perfectly as you would expect, apart from the need to get some 55mm dampers double quick, as despite assurances, the old ones were 50mm. Had I known, I would have gone for Bilstein B6/B8? the std ride height ones anyway, but time wouldn't allow me to source them.

Been on for a couple of years now. Work splendidly, so much more in reserve, when I traversed the same passes as before, apart from a bit of smell the pedal was the same, ie effective so a result.

As a mostly considerate driver, I try and anticipate traffic, so after a while of only very light use, the brakes will glaze slightly, a couple of proper stops will sort that, and that is the only con I have noticed.

So do you need to make suspension mods to fit the 312 set up?

Depends. I think all the hubs which come with 312mm discs have 55mm dampers. The smaller disks seem to vary. You will have to measure the diameter of the bottom of the damper where it goes in to the hub. I had to fit Boge as they were available. An OEM fitment, and reasonably cheap.

Get the carriers from a PD170 Golf - they have the 312mm as standard. People don't seem to have cordoned on to this :-)

For reference, a PD140 Octy will have 55mm struts and 288mm discs.

Can anyone confirm if you need to change the suspension to fit 312 vrs set up on a 1.9 PD105?

Many thanks

AS I said in a previous post (did you read it?) there are different possibilities, and YOU will have to check for yourself. I was given the wrong information by people on this forum. I merely mention what you need to check but I think the likely hood is yes.

MY car is a 105hp, on a 56 plate. I think I paid £700, which also included a full service, cam belt/water pump change, RARB, console bushes and the new dampers fitted.

As Andy points out, there are quite a few vehicles in the various VAG ranges out there with the bits you require. Use google or ekta.

If you have the FS III, then you can't easily swap over the 312mm without some bits and new front dampers.

To be honest, I'd just put new disks on and fit some higher performing pads if you want more stopping power.

For example EBC red stuff ceramic (new ones not old ones) are fine as long as you're not tracking it and many others will have prefered pads.

Another good pad for road use is the ferodo performance.
