Winter tyres: quick check before purchase

Featured Replies

i got ultragrip 8 195 65 15 £49 .00 free delivery from oponeo ordered tuesday

arrived friday, £15.00 to fit quite pleased, bit noisey but good on ice, not enough

snow to know how good yet

Mytyres are selling 195/65 R15 91H Goodyear Ultragrip 8s on steels for only £81.60 each! Those are the tyres I use and I think they're great.

And yes, pump them up a bit more than normal.

Been thinking about going to winters

This seems a good price can't see the £81.60 price

on the 8385 wheel £87.30 or the 9165 wheel £83 orT for £77.40

(+the £9.90del each)

Would these wheel options require new bolts?

If as above the tyres can be had for £50(allthough oponeo is showing £63) my local salvage place is breaking a octavia classic(08 same as my elegance) with steels(if not damaged from a frontal) not sure what size but last time I bought off them they were £12 each for steel wheels from their shop. £5 to fit a tyre.

OE steel wheels use the same bolts as you use for alloys, with aftermarket rims it is best to check before purchase, some will use the same bolts, others will not.

The steels I got from mytyres use the same bolts.

I'm running Continental Wintercontact TS830P 195/65R15 on steels with pukka Skoda trims - looks low rent but who cares in this weather. Compared with my summer 205/55R16's, they roll and squirm about more but surprisingly get better mpg (narrower tread).

Oponeo.co.uk are doing them for £58 a corner (free delivery) or for £51 you could go for the TS850P.

Got mine last year and they were delivered in less than a week straight from Conti in Germany - £5 a wheel for fitting and balancing at a local back street garage and I was sorted.

From experience, unless you are in deep snow, the winter tyres should keep you moving without the need for chains.

Cheers,

Andrew

PS, I use the same bolts for both my alloys and the steels.

In snow, it is better to run winters without trims at all, as there is less risk of packed snow putting tyre out of balance.

To protect the wheels and the hub caps/driveshaft bolts, I spray a layer of Nigrin silicone paint (black thingy, I think intended for exhausts) every 2-3 years or so.

Keeps the wheels nice and corrosion free.

I went to recheck the mytyres prices and somehow it came up with euro.

the prices were cheaper about £25 for the set I was looking at.

this delivery in germany only but thye have other EU sites so if traveling it may be worth looking at the prices where you are going just in case there are savings.

list of international sites.
