Rear Wheel Speed Sensors

Featured Replies

Hi guys.

I've recently been diagnosing an ABS fault with my trust Octavia. Had it into an independent and the codes returned pointed to both rear speed sensors failed. No sign of any intermittent faults or broken cabling. Just had two genuine speed sensors fitted and the ABS warning lights are still on after driving the car. I asked the independent about the hubs / reluctor ring(s) and they said there is no sign they are shot.

I think my question is, do you have to clear the ABS codes after fitting the sensors?

Thanks for any help in advance.

Log the car and see what speed is being picked up on each wheel sensor.

How did they check abs rings as these can't be checked unless hub is fully removed?

My bet is its the abs rings which are built in

Lights should go out by them self. It's your rear hubs need changing. Almost 100%.

Where are you located?

Thanks for your responses guys. I've been trying to avoid thinking about the hubs being changed. I'm in the North East of England. Do you need any special tools to change the hubs or are they a specialist only job?

Just a spline bit. Pretty easy to do. Takes no more than an hour to change

Cheers Donovan. I picked up the hubs today. Just need to track down M14 and M18 spline bits and I'm in business.

Hey Donovan. Just to update you, hubs changed and fault cleared! Thanks for the advice!

I've just had my rear left hub replaced as well, when I told the mechanic the fault over the phone he said he reckoned it would be a hub as he's seen quite a few on VW based cars. On mine the ABS light would normally come straight up shortly followed the ESP/TCS and TPM lights, occasionally the ABS light wasn't on at startup but all three would come on shortly after. The car was logging this fault:

2 Faults Found

00290 - ABS Wheel Speed Sensor; Rear Left (G46)

008 - Implausible Signal - Intermittent

00290 - ABS Wheel Speed Sensor; Rear Left (G46)

003 - Mechanical Failure - Intermittent

On checking the car the mechanic found it was the ABS ring which isn't a separate part so he had to replace the hub, no sign of any error since then.

John

That's okay. Glad you got it sorted
