Engine judder suspected dogbone!

Featured Replies

Just wondered if somebody could help / point me in the right direction. Symptons are as follows -

- When driving at roughly 30/40mph and above if I apply throttle and put the car under load I start to get vibration.

- When the car begins to build up speed the vibrations get worse and worse (filling's coming out of my mouth)

- At any point / speed if I let off the throttle the vibrations stops and coasts smoothly.

- 99% sure I have rulled out wheel balancing as iv recently had new tyres and I had it balanced twice.

Due to all of the above it leads me to think its and engine mount possibly dogbone, if anyone has any info it would be most appreciated

Thanks Dan

Doesn't sound like the dogbone to me, you're more likely to get a knocking on/off throttle with that.

Is there loss of power? If so coilpack?

Failing that perhaps flywheel? Though I'm not sure if that would only occur under power maybe somebody else can answer that one

There's no loss of power the car still runs well it just feels like the engine wants to shake itself out of the bonnet, there 2 reason's I'm thinking it could be a mount / dogbone. First is a friend had one go on his vectra a few years back and it reminds me of that, second is that Bowdens on here did a "how to guide" on changing a dogbone and his description seems very similar???

I have a brand new OEM one in my garage matey if you need one. I had to buy it a month or so back as my front bush had fubard and I couldn't have the car off the road. I fully polybushed my original one in the end a put that back on. I can even supply it with the THS uprated stiffer rubber bush fitted if required. PM for details if you like.

Cheers pal, I am getting the car checked on Monday to confirm that is the problem and if it is the problem then we can sort something out then .

Would you be able to put up a pic of the parts in question please!

Thanks

Will get some pics up over the weekend for you buddy.

Does it shake when revving in neutral? Or is it just under load & in gear?

Cheers pal!

Mainly when in gear, I just went out and tried it in neutral and there wasn't really any extra vibration??

My guess is that you have a drive shaft or a transmission issue.

Funny enough I have a brand new drivers side drive shaft sitting here too if its required. Wow I should open my own shop lol.

I prefered the dogbone bush idea as that seems cheaper and I can upgrade it, but what will be will be and all that :( . Only thing that makes me think it shouldn't be drive shaft is when I lift off it free roles fineand surely if it was driveshaft it would judder all the time the car is moving? I'm not ruleing anything out yet.

Porkballs you could end up being my hero at this rate!

I would of expected a lot of engine movement when revved if it was the dog bone. Open the bonnet & get someone to rev it up to see if the engine is rocking excessively. I've had a mkiv Golf Anniversary that had the same symptoms as you describe, & it was a goosed driveshaft at fault. Shook under load stopped instantly when I came off the gas pedal.

Ok pal when you put it like that it makes abit more sense, I will have a look at engine shaking in a min before i set off home. Have you got any info on cost's involved and fitting ect!

Sorry to post to such an old thread but it doesn't seem to have a resolution. Did you get to the bottom of it?

07 plate 1.9 Diesel DSG Automatic Octavia estate. 104,000, fully serviced, and full history.

I've been intermittently having the same problem exactly as described above. First time it happened on motorway I called for recovery. Recovered to garage, however on road tests next day it ran perfectly! Couldn't find a fault and it passed its MOT same day with no problems!

300 good motorway miles went by over 3 days. Then it happened again.

Second time I limped it to a services, let it sit for 15 mins, checked and added some oil (in hindsight I'm sure it didn't need this) and limped it home 30-40mph on the A roads.

Next day - car absolutely fine again. Swapped cars with the wife and she's used it daily for errands for 3 weeks with not a single recurrence.

Attempts at diagnosis:

Non-main dealer who I've used and trusted for years thought it might be the flywheel, or possibly the gearbox. He doesn't have the tools to repair. Found an error code int he computer from the transmission about unexpectedly coming out of gear. Told me I'd have to go to main dealer.

Main dealer couldn't reproduce, confirmed they'd seen the error code and had no clue. Said it wasn't economical to investigate further (gearbox strip down etc going to be >£800 excluding any parts they might need to fit if they could even figure out the problem)

Looking at replacing it now, a shame as it's a lovely car and should still have many 1000s of miles to go (my last went to 220K!)
