Rubber v Ice = Ice Win

Summer tyres v slush = Slush win.

Talent v Ability = Talent normally greater.

Mind you that first one was nearly me yesterday on a small hill road near me. Was clear when I went up and covered when I came down. Even in 1st, esp etc were having a tough job to keep it straight as I slid down.

slush on tarmac is evil, even with winters on

ps

particulary on that pre-mix quick resurfacing tarmac used in the uk

surface is too smooth and becomes hard when cold

got help up by a woman in a Suzuki Vitara this morning who couldn't get up the hill in front of me. I was getting on fine with my winter tyres.

Eventually had to go to her aid, slipped into 4WD and drove off effortlessly!!!!

Was driving the wife's Rav 4 yesterday and had a few interesting moments approaching junctions and bends as it slid on the compacted snow/slush. Went out a bit later in the vRS (with winter thres) and had no issues at all other than when I deliberately pushed it to see where the limits were!

just proves the fact that it doesn't matter how many driven wheels you have if you have no traction.

I was in Iceland a few years ago and we went on a trip into the glaciers in a 4WD "monitor truck" mini bus. Driver let the tryes down when we got to the real off road stuff and had an on-board compressor to pump them up again on the way back. Had a pretty awesome drive on ski-doo's in the middle of the trip.

And this bloke had no trouble... 28 seconds in you can simultaneously behold

the wonder that is Quattro and the staggering impatience of your average Audi driver

You have to admit, it is pretty cool to be able to do that!lol

Until you come across a ditch/concrete bollard/tree stump/drain at which point you turn into a idiot and get twice as many hits on You Tube!

Yep that's what I thought. Lol. That kind of stunt is cool if you pull it off but if it goes wrong ......

I saw a video (from Russia as they always seem to be) of a big 4x4 travelling fairly quickly down a road and hitting a manhole with the cover missing, it virtually did a forward roll.

WHY NOT LEARN TO DRIVE ON SNOW. IT'S NOT HARD,BUT IT DOES TAKE A YEARS OF EXPERIANCE. BRAKES- NOT NEEDED. It's eaasy -

Nokians are excellent on slush, but even on winters you still have to drive to the conditions.

I remember many years ago when I had my Favorit I was heading over the Sidlaw hills on a road with deepish snow towards Dundee and was being followed quite closely by a sporty 4x4 car, for whatever reason the Favorit seemed to pull up the hill with few problems and get through, the fancy 4x4 dropped back going up the hill and I didn't see it again. Perhaps the Favorit's narrow tyres were helpful.

IMHO the one major cause of difficulties in the snow is the width of tyres on modern cars. I remember 125 profile tyres on my RWD Viva with a heap of sandbags in the boot - would go places a modern car wouldn't even think about..

My old man had a Diane 6 (like a 2CV only prettier/uglier depending on which way you looked at it) back in the bad winter of 82? and that thing just never got stuck, it was running on 4 rubber bands though. Was also fairly impressive off road due to the suspension.

we used to use paving slabs or kerb stones as you didnt lose so much boot space :D

I have the Octy on 195 Continental winters this year and I must say they make more of a difference than can be believed...

It astounds me how many people who drive 4x4s assume that if it snows they can drive at normal road speeds because they have 4WD.

My work sent me on a 4x4 driving course before Christmas. The place I went was under quite alot of snow and ice and we spent a lot of time going through techniques on how to drive when there's limited traction. I've always been a confident driver but the course was worth every penny (well, if I'd paid for it!). The main conclusion to the course though was still not to go out if the weather's too bad.

Ok, but the rest of us don't have time to follow you at half tractor speed. Please don't tell us your Ari Vatenan's cousin either.

I had an interesting time this morning on my way to work. Last night was okay (just took an hour longer than usual after pushing two people out of the work car park and jump starting someone else!) Obviously it's not as good as a car on summers on dry roads, but it's so controllable on 4 winters. But this morning was just no ball. Came out of the car park to my apartment which is half way up a 2 in 1, it melted last night, but froze solid. Even winters can't save you, front slid sideways and back followed suit, sideways down the hill, across the road and got it to the other side. Got half way up that hill until some eejit in a BMW didn't fancy waiting at the top for me, I had to stop and there I was stuffed. Had to be towed up the hill :(
