Octy 2 beam pattern

Featured Replies

Not sure the shape of mine is quite right. If anyone is happy to bang a photo up of the beam pattern they get (say a metre or so from the garage wall/door/etc) I'd be muchly grateful. If we could have a range of xenon, HID, halogen etc all te bermtter as people could use it for reference. Perhaps we could state:

Pre FL or FL

Halogen/xenon/HID

Flat beamed/normal/single headlight flat beamed

???

Then why not get it checked??

Then why not get it checked??

It's been checked - well set by skoda anyway and checked by a VW dealer who also do MOTs

The problem is the kick ups don't allign as I thought they did, plus my neighbours xenons seem not to have a kick at all and generally im becoming unsure what it 'should' look like. Also, someone in the 'why have a kick up' thread said they'd flat beamed the drivers side only which I am tempted to do as my kick seems quite far right - almost in the middle of the car in front quite often.

Finally, having hit a bird ages ago I replaced the headlight carrier and its surprising how much adjustment is available on that. Maybe my left/right adjustment is out......

In the other thread someone posted a flat beam picture and I thought a range of similar photos showing all the available options could be useful, certainly for me and maybe for others.

I'm not asking anyone I get out with their cameras but if lots took a quick picture with their phone next time they got back home in the dark it wouldn't take much effort?

I'll try over the next day or two to get a pic for you mate, mines is all over the place yet Skoda says its fine and meets MOT legislation...

Mine lights up half the houses when i drive past lol, i think its too high my self.

It should conform to this diagram:

This is a pic of mine when driving on the left side you can see how high the beam is up those stone pillars!!

Are your lights factory HID grizzle? They look like it, but I'm not sure.

My factory HID's have a very similar beam to yours. I've never been sure about the beam pattern, especially on the near side headlight. I think it's too high as well.

Coming out of left hand bends I get the feeling I'm dazzling oncoming traffic. But it keeps passing MOTs.

Mines very similar to this

This happens to have the high beams in it as well. 2012 with Xenons.

if its a flat beam, and xenon's - its most likely in "tourist" mode.

You beam should look something like this with a step up and not a kick up.

It's from my ZR (custom xenon headlights) not my Octavia but the only difference is the Octavia is better (wider & cleaner light output)

Thanks xpower that's perfect - and very much different to mine. Ill get a picture of mine tonight.

I take it yours are xenons in 'normal' mode

Edit: just seen 'custom xenon'. By that, do you mean retrofit HIDs? Are you using the original headlights (ie just bulbs replaced)?

Yeh mine are factory fitted and been aligned by Skoda twice but i still feel it blinds people, they do move up and down when going over undulations on the road though.

I wouldn't have another car without xenons though they are good.

If you look at the shape of cutoff while the other headlight is covered, it should be Z-shaped for projector lights.

You can switch projectors to flat beam, then obvoiusly you see a straight line border between light and dark areas.

I've compared my FL xenons to a couple of pre-FL cars and while I didn't actually do any real tests, the pre-FL beam "feels" wider and flatter.

My FL car has a slightly narrower beam and the "kick-up" (to use a word from the diagram above) is slightly higher. The "break point" is also slightly more pronounced.

Mines just like Grizzle's

Pre FL with OEM xenons.

The nearside beam "kick up" is a bit high IMO.

Time will tell - MOT on Monday.

HIDs fitted O/S headlamp kick up masked:

I have got a pre-fl mk2 factory fitted with xenons. I have read in the post about various modes like tourist mode for xenons. How do I know which mode my xenon is on and can I change it with Ross Tech VCDS? I also own a mk1 also factory fitted with xenons. Does mk1's also have various xenon modes?

Tourist mode is only on mk2 FL with AFS xenons

Took this in a car park late the other night. The kicks not lining up are my main question I spose......

That's normal. The lights will put out parallel beams when set up correctly so will never be convergent.

Prefl factory fit xenons
