I feel a new Yeti coming on.

Featured Replies

Had mine 2 years, ex demo so December 2010. Low miles but when I bought it having your choice of features involved up to 6 months wait.

Mileage now lower than it used to be-around 8000 P/A.

Some questions for the joint wisdom of the forum.

I'm pretty sure it will be an L&K and manual.

1.8 or 170? I have seen the dpf light 3 times in 2 years and don't mind going for a little blat to clear it but I suspect for my mileage there will be no saving on fuel cost over 3 years sufficient to outweigh the capital cost of the diesel.

Does the 1.8 get the bigger brakes?

Colour? Presently thinking Black-saw one yesterday in Elegance trim and looked wonderful- or storm blue, but not seen one, any decent images?

I have and enjoy my MDI-is it standard on an L&K, -or even available?

  • Apologies John, I just felt that putting his text in bright red added nothing positive and that it was done to only try to highlight someone else possibly being at fault. I've read a number of things

  • Interesting read, I think you guys regard your Yeti as a pair of socks, with this I mean you are all changing them before you get the thing run in and benefit from the sweet spot between 45 and 65,000

I've averaged over 46mpg over 3 years in my CR170.

I can help with but one query you mention... the mathematical one, of course, re fuel costs.

If you assume 8000 miles per year for 3 years, petrol consumption 35 mpg, diesel 40mpg, todays prices petrol £1.38, diesel £1.45 then it will save you £350 over the three years buying the diesel car. Hope that helps?

Im a petrol head myself so it would have to be the 1.8tsi for me. If you do over 16k a year then consider the diesel on financial grounds. Black is the worst colour for a yeti in my opinion as the floating roof design doesn't have the effect it should and such a dark colour hides the Yetis lines that add more visual impact on the lighter colours. Colour is a personal choice of course. The 1.8 gets the front brake setup as the 140tdi - 288mm. Only the 170 gets the 312mm setup.

Thanks both for helpful thoughts-I doubt I'd get 35 petrol/40 diesel but the sums do stack up against the diesel when purchase price is considered.

My Storm Blue Yeti....

Not sure it would look as good with the dark L&K leather though (mine's Gobi).

I'm in the same position JCP.

I don't do the mileage to justify the diesel but I want DSG.

That leaves me with the 1.2 petrol or the 140 diesel.

The 1.2 is a great little engine but I prefer the way a diesel engine drives, so I'm probably going with the 140.

As for colour, its either going to be another musky or the storm blue.

I saw one in the local dealer, Palmers Watford, a short time ago and it looked really good.

JCP, you might want to give them a ring to see if its still there

You can get the MDI cable as an option (£175) I think. It is now listed on the car configurator. I ordered the CR170 L&K 3 weeks ago, and the dealer added the MDI on last week.

I don't think Storm blue is available on the L&K i'm afraid, or it least not on the configurator.

Is storm blue the solid colour, or is it a metallic?

Storm Blue is a metallic. The big sun roof will make the black interior look lighter overall.

If your doing low miles and the DPF light is coming up occasionally, then you need to consider the petrol IMHO, although you may get hit on the resale value, due to the general unpopularity of the 1.8 engine on the used market.

Colour, as others have stated a personal thing but I think lighter colours tend to suit the Yeti, maybe consider a two tone roof; best of both.

MDI not sure on the Yeti option, it's new over here despite being available elsewhere from launch but it came as standard with our Fabia Monte Carlo. Dealer swapped the as standard apple lead for a USB and the wife's more than happy as she has put lots of music on a data stick and it works a treat on the basic swing radio.

I was offered £17,250 for mine when it was a month short of being two years old, which I thought was very good? My local dealer told me they were holding up well as people were wary of the DPFs on the diesels and the possible problems. I was surprised to hear it myself, not least because they usually tell you anything to support reducing the offer!

Depends where you are I suppose, here my local dealers don't like them and I do remember a while ago a few Elegances on the used market at least 1 to 2k less than the equivalent TDI140's. Currently there are only 5 I can find on the approved used locator under 4x4, all SE's from 15 to 18.5k.

Also to bear in mind that the 1.8 petrol costs more to tax per year than the diesel. Versus the manual version of the 140/170 diesel, the 1.8 petrol costs £80 more per year at present and £55 more per year than the 140 diesel DSG (all based on 4x4 versions.)

This brings the total cost of ownership difference down between the petrol and diesel, just something else to bear in mind. As others have said, diesels generally hold their value better than the petrols, especially 4x4 versions.

But then you could simply balance that with the fact the diesels need the cam belt doing at £400+ every 4 years. That's more than the annual tax saving gives you back. ;)

The engine and gearbox like the colour are all personal choices. The Yeti in black though has a certain elegance (no pun intended) about it. It just looks right to me. If I didn't have a black car it would have been a non metallic red as both colours seem to be evergreen  that don't go out of fashion. I have not seen a Yeti yet that does not suit its colour though.

I'd say that's subject to argument. The 1.8 petrol has, I believe, a chain driven cam but this still requires inspection and isn't immune to failure. I've heard of the 1.2 cam chain issues but can't say I've heard of any on the 1.8 so far.

Depending on how long you plan to keep the car, the timing belt change may not even be a cost factor anyway?

Err... Now I'm a tad confused. I have just been looking at the service schedule (very sad I know) for my 170 oil burner and unless I'm going blind (a possibility) stupid or both (a very high possibility) reference to the service schedule for the Yeti on pages 10 to 12 for a 2012 model other than the 'toothed belt and tensioner' replacement in the section 'In addition every 180,000 Km ' on page 11. I do not see a time factor for replacement in the 'Every 4 years or 60,000 Km' section on page 10 although I can understand why it may be prudent to change it after 4 years or so.

Maybe TP can help?

I have been told that the cam belt is 100k miles minimum, so I'm intrigued as to where Yeti Man got that from.

Thanks Graham, 100K Miles equates to approx 160,000 Km this would make more sense as the schedule stated 180,000 Km to be on the safe side.

The view for the every 4 years may be a throw back to the PD power plants?

I'm on my second yeti after 46k in the first one.

went for the 170bhp diesel but would have preferred the petrol but the mpg is too low and my mileage at 16k a year too high.

if you pay more for a diesel you will get your money back on the difference as the UK market is obsessed with buying diesels.

The 1.8 turbo sounds sweeter though (but unlike the 170 the brakes arnt any bigger)

Possibly the same place you get your information such as haldex interval oil change?! ;-)

Try a search on here, possibly the superb 2 section. 4 years or 100,000 miles (although I've also seen 120k mentioned)

The best thing to do would simply be to take a test drive in both. If you really can't decide now, this should provide you the answer. My worries are always with the dpf but that's my concern with my commute, yours may be different. :)

Thank you every body!! As I really want the roof and would also like the DAB-only the L&K makes sense. I'm coming to the view that Black will be the colour-I saw one at Prospect Letchworth with the panoramic roof and Gobi and it is sensational. I think the 1.8 makes sense for my mileage and the saving on the purchase price will pay for quite a lot of VED and MPG.

I'm being quoted £23,500 with a trade in at an estimated late May date of 16,250. I will negotiate from that -an extra year of warranty and the MDI would be useful and the big change since spring 2010 is the very good guy at Letchworth seems keener to deal!

They are an excellent outfit and I'd like to deal again there.

I've averaged over 46mpg over 3 years in my CR170.

Very close, 47mpg average here.

Where did 40 come from, must be given some stick!

If I was buying again and was doing under 15k miles per year = 1.8 no question.

I'd add the 5 year warranty at time of order too.
