Vrs uprated discs and pads none used?

Featured Replies

My rear discs are absolutely knackered and the fronts don't look the best so seen these on ebay for £130 delivered. Mintex pads and grooved discs, anyone used these? Would like to do the 312 upgrade but I'm looking at £150 just for the carriers and calipers so would be a £300+ job to sort front and rears! Should I go for these or just go for standard discs and pads all round?

Wouldn't bother with grooved discs just good quality standard ones with Mintex pads will be more than enough unless you drive like Schumacher all the time

No do the really drive it hard at all it's my work car just have the odd blast in it. Will see if the standard discs work out cheaper. Will these be a improvement with Mintex pads?

Mintex pads are decent quality just mate them with OE discs Eurocar parts do good stuff and 25% off I think with brisk25 promo code

got these on mine.can't fault them.had them on the car now for nearly 3 years...

They're not actually mintex discs its just the pads that are mintex if you read the ad properly, I found using oem brembo discs and Ref stuff pads worked more than well with mine.

Grooved discs are not going to give you anything extra other than a bigger hole in your bank account in this application. I'd also be wary of 'generic' discs that have been machined, OE quality manufacturers tend to spend a bit of time matching pad characteristics and disc composition to ensure even wear and life.

You are reducing the contact area, increasing pad wear (should at least keep the pad surface clean) and risking trapping debris while introducing more braking noise. I've seen back to back braking tests done on the rollers and they made no discernible difference to braking. On the track or in the wet that could change but on a road going car driven legally it won't make a discernible difference.

Also considering the brake force distribution and how little goes to the rears then putting grooved discs on the rear would be a waste.

but they do look AWESOME!

but they do look AWESOME!

Exactly.....

I have these discs and pads and they're not bad, the pads are a bit ****ty but for the price it's no real suprise.

They do look sweet behind the wheels though.

For reference the braking distribution is 70%' front and 30% rear.

My rears are up for changing soon and I will be replacing with grooved discs and EBC green stuff pads.

The same will happen on the front too when that time comes......

Green stuff?! Good luck with that, they may be lower dust but that is the only positive thing I can possibly say about them even on much lighter cars.

Do they improve braking over the standard brakes or not really?

I'm not too bothered about the grooved discs I just thought this was a good price seeing as Mintex pads were going on for a ton on there own!

Hope your never behind me when you need to stop in a hurry, EBC greens are just plain dangerous IMHO. I don't rate yellow either, road rallied an Audi A3 with them once and the brake fade was a serious issue.

Tarox is always my weapon of choice for brakes, not cheap but I know whenever I press that middle pedal, the car will stop and it'll stop quickly.

My style of driving is like miss daisy but when needed they do feel a lot better when braking over original discs..hope that helps..

I'm glad I'm not the only one to find this, I know a lot of the scooby.net members had real issues with EBC a few years back over recommended pad application that was frankly unsuitable and EBC were a forum sponsor at the time iirc. The Green Stuff compound is probably the worst I've had the displeasure of driving with, fade was awful and they didn't have the stopping power from cold either, this was with EBC's own Sport slotted and dimpled discs. I'd never, ever fit them again, i'd rather shove an Eicher pad/disc combo on and i've slated them previously. I've also seen de-lamination on EBC black, I put it down to the fitting error till someone else suffered the same a year later on another forum. If you want uprated buy a decent pad, it won't come in a EBC box. If you want a great quality OE pad for road use then buy Padgid or Bosch, whatever you fit change the brake fluid, it'll make more of a noticeable difference in most cases and cost a fraction of the price but is often overlooked.

I don't drive mine hard and don't often use the brakes and especially not hard but have noticed they're shocking when I have needed to slam on

When was the fluid last changed? It's the cheapest upgrade you can do but one of those jobs that some garages just ignore.

I have the set, work really well. Get a bit of brake fade on the track but that is to be expected :) a great fast road pad/disc combo though :)

I changed the fluid about 4000 mile ago when I freed off the nsr caliper but will change it again when I do the discs and pads

That will do me then, I'm not planning on tracking it and don't really brake particularly hard anyway but just wanted better stoppers for if I need them

I run Greenstuff all round and have no problems stopping. Green stuff is not suitable for cars with over 200bhp eg Scoobies. In that case use Red or yellows. My father uses Red ceramic on his Scooby for many years and never had problems. I've had OEM Skoda pads de-laminate on our other Fabia.

As for discs, if your going for bigger brakes, plain ones will be perfectly good. Grooved ones may be better at clearing muck/dust from the pad/disc surface but they will be noisy when breaking.

Greenstuff aren't suitable for milk floats. I've run them on my previous Rover 214 with all of 103bhp and they would fade just slowing down from 70 on slip roads off motorways and dual carriage ways. Dusty as hell and if I pushed them, the discs would be glowing in no time. INHO Greenstuff should be illegal on the grounds on public safety.
