Removal of rear calliper carrier

Featured Replies

Hi All

Can someone tell me what tool is required for removal of rear calliper carrier? By the looks of it it's an 11mm allen key?

M14 spline/triple square iirc, and they're a total pig to undo ime.

Lots of threads on this topic and one in the technical guides subsection.

As already said M14 spline, total nightmare to remove to the high torque spec, I intend to change my rear discs for the 2nd time on Thursday. Don't forget to renew the 'stretch bolts'

If they've not been off before it could be a real PITA.

The mechanic that did mine moaned at how hard it was. I don't know how he did it in the end, I probably don't want to know.

Seriously - try a kettle of boiling water poured over the carrier and bolts before removal. I once had a wheel nut I really couldn't budge no matter how hard I tried. I was about to give up when my very elderly uncle (ex-aircraft mechanic - Sunderland Flying boats) came out with a kettle full of boiling water and poured it over the nut and wheel. He said 'try that'. I though he was having a laugh, but to his credit it loosened a treat.

OK so it's not an oxy-torch but it can be enough to help.

This sounds like great fun! Just the hassle i might see what a garage would charge!

Thats why mine is booked into local garage on thursday morn.

It's not beyond a 'competent' DIY'er but you need a fair ammount of underspace. I bought an m14 spline for mine and the VAG parts site I got it from sent a 75mm spline which was far too long to fit in the space available to get at the bolt. In the end I cut it down in length. One bolt I did by using the breaker bar out along the same line as the axle arm and the other one ended up quite comical in that I had to dig a hole in the gravel drive to be able to get the breaker bar vertically down to get the movement I wanted. As for the 'stated' bolt torque, that went out the window and I just did them up to my own ******* tight spec. . For ease you really need it on a ramp, axle/wheel ramps or a pit.
