Sound deadening sheets

Featured Replies

The road roar on certain surfaces was getting to me so I decided to try some sound deadening strips, designed to soak up vibrations. They were self adhesive an a piece of p@&h to fit, took 20 mins.

I stuck on the ones in the pic, plus a couple under the back seats.

The results, well they haven't made the car silent, but to my ears it's more a low rumble now, rather than a roar. At first on the test drive I was surprised at how loud they make the engine sound now, this wasn't apparent before due to the noise in the back, but the engine sounds cool so this isn't a problem.

Another pointer to how they have worked is the radio dosn't need to be up so loud now to drown out the noise.

A pack of 10 cost about £20 including P&P from eBay, not too bad for what I think has made a noticeable difference.

Self adhesive roof flashing does the job and is cheap enough from B & Q type stores.

The last roll I bought was 150mm wide by 10 metres for around £13.

top tip :)

not really as you need to use loads for it to do a good job and you'll end up spending the same as if you bought loads of proper deadening or even the actual product you need which is a noise barrier

And if you buy any roofing type material with bitumen in it, your car could start to smell like a freshly paved road during warm weather...

Yeah you have to be careful with the flashing tape, specially if you put it on doors as I know of a few who have fine this and then in the extreme heat its become slightly detached and then touched the glass. That lead to no end of problem

The sheets used here are a good start and the same as what many manufacturers have used for years

If you want even more start looking at the car audio stuff which can be even more sound deadening

There was a great US forum post where they compared the various types of materials people use

It makes good difference, eh!?

Putting in a bit more effort to cover up all bare metal helps - and under bonnet is the key one too - that really suppresses all tin noises, it's a lovely sounding engine after all :)

I went all out a good few years ago: http://www.wastedspace.co.uk/cms/2010/10/01/noisekiller-for-octavia/ and really it's one of those 'trust us' things as recording device don't do it justice.

Top tip. For £20 I'd take a chance on that

Have you got a link to the seller?

Good luck mate, and hope you notice a difference, I was out earlier this morning and was thinking the 20 quid was well worth the ( if not huge ) reduction in road roar, like I said earlier, its more a low rumble now rather than that annoying roar.

Got them through today. Really surprised at the weight of the package. Can't help but wonder how dense sheets of rubbery stuff can do much but we'll see.

hopefully fit sometime over the weekend.

Did it last night. Pretty much the same way as Sparticus did in his pic, I maybe lined the wheel well a bit more. Stuck a couple under the back seats too.

Very easy to do. The stuff cuts easily and is quite bendy round the lumps and bumps.

Did it work? A bit.

It's definitely taken the edge of the road noise in the car. How much? Hard to tell. I'd say 5-10% but maybe more on high pitched noises. The radio was definitely easier to hear at lower volumes.

I think if you were a bit more aggressive and put much more of the stuff in doors and under carpets it would make quite a big difference.

For £20 it's not bad.

i wonder how long till you guys remove it because your car is starting to smell?

When reducing road noise its one of those things you can't do on the cheap

Er This is the same stuff that many cars come out of the factory with. It does not have any smell at all.

Some of the things like Flashing tape which are essentially just bitumen can give off a smell thus why you need to be careful what you use.

I have used flashing tape in my work car. No smell at all. Even when peeled fully during install.

No smell at all when fitting the stuff from ebay.

The bigest change comes from mass damping the spare wheel well.

I've done that on the sides and base and placed a bit on the boot floor.

If you can get some good quality underlay, then placing that under the carpet helps even more.

Been like that for years and it's a great improvement :)
