window tinting

Featured Replies

i want to get the windows tinted in sth bham. the only quote ive had so far is 250 for light smoke 3 windows or 350 for a darker tint.

can anyone tell me what kind of price to expect, i dont wamt to leave a phone number with lots of companies and get called non stop and some companies dont have very good reviews. can anyone advise please, thank you

I live near Lincoln and just had my Fabia estate done for £140

A few years ago the JPS estate cost the same

I think they're taking the urine asking for those figures

I am getting mine done for £100, there is a chap doing them at home, and had loads good feedback about the work and quality. Another guy qouted the same but he is not starting till end of May. He has got a car wrapping company here in Leeds.

Try tintmaster in telford. I only paid 120.

I was at 'the car spa' in rubery yesterday getting a quote for some work and he suggested getting my windows tinted, and I'm sure he said £180 for the front and rears. Might be worth a call.

Kirk

I don't understand how a darker tint costs £100 more!!! Surly it is just a different shade of film?

I wouldn't use a mobile guy either, due to dust control issues.

Going rate seems to be £150-£200. I'd be wary of anyone charging substantially more (or less) than that.....

Dont forget to check how much your insurance will go up as well.

It's worth checking - certainly worth declaring, but I've found most mainstream insurers don't care these days. More than and axa both basically said I could do what I want as long as it doesn't affect performance or handling, and comes in at less than £1500......

Try getting a quote for rears only, as anything on the front is likely to make them illegal

It may just have been for the rears in that case, will check next time I'm there!

You've got me interested now. I'm in Nuneaton so not far from you. Just got a new baby and could do with some shade in the back. Keep me posted if you don't mind.

Out of interest what % tint is standard sunset glass from factory?

I seem to recall it lets in 35% of light, which sounds quite dark but it really isn't.

I went 15% and was scared but its spot on. 5% is a 'drug dealer' blackout......

Thanks all for the advice, will shop around at some of the above and see what I can get sorted, will let you know how i get on!

Hi mate, just got mine done by 'a national company'! Indoor dust free job, very professional, took 2hours on my octavia estate, all the rear done cost 160. Worth every penny. Didn't go too dark, can't remember off top of my head, but think it was 30% tint film? In some lights you can just see through it, in some light it's total black out! Go for it.

just had a very quick reply from car spa which reads,

Hi Jim. Thanks for your message. The cost to do a 5 door vehicle is £180 for the whole car or £150 for just the rears. When I say the whole thing that means with the legal limit on the two front doors of 30% and as dark as you like on the two rear doors and the rear screen. You could also add a sun strip for an extra £20 if you wanted to darken the driver cabin a little more. There are some pics on the tinting gallery on the website or if you click yhe twitter link on there im sure theres lots more examples you'd like www.thecarspa.co.uk

Look forward to hearing from you soon.

But now read this on their legal page so a bit confusd!!!!

Anything forward of the B pillar (front windows) must not be tinted in any way.

You are however still allowed to perform any level of tinting on your rear windows.

This new legislation came info effect in January 2004, However it has been applied retrospectively and so if you’ve tinted your windows before January that does not mean that you are safe, if the police believe that your tint causes reduced visibility they can issue you with an order to have it removed.

The Car Spa staff are fully trained and skilled to advise on all aspects of car window and commercial vehicle window tinting. The team will be happy to offer guidance on all your vehicle tinting applications.

And now i just found this so not sure that they know what they are talking about at car spa?

Many window tint installers will tell you the law on tinting front windows is unclear and will tint your front windows as they can always say that they did not think it was for road use or that what you do with your car is your own responsibility. Be warned: this is not the case. The law is now quite clear and installers can also be prosecuted if they allow a vehicle with tinted front windows to drive away from their premises. You can even have your vehicle served with a prohibition of use order. Another misconception is that a 30% tint is allowed on front windows. Unfortunately even these light tints now fall foul of the law. Read on for the full story:-

The Window tinting Regulation was amended from 1st January 2004 which now clearly rules out any tinted films being applied to driver windows (Front doors).

The Regulation states 70% of visible light must pass through the driver's side windows (75% through the windscreen) including any other substrate fitted to the glass. Many people misunderstand the regulation and presume that 70% allows a 30% tint - It doesn't! Glass does not let in 100% of light. Clear glass only allows approximately 86% of light to pass & the slight tint of standard manufactured glass varies from the 70% maximum limit up to approx 80% of light passing through, thus any film being applied to these windows will drop the light transmissions to below the regulation limit.

If your front windows are tinted to any level you do risk being stopped by either Traffic Police or VOSA (Vehicle & Operator Services Agency) they have light meters to test the light that passes through your glass. If you have a subtle tint fitted then you should just be asked for it to be removed, if you have dark front door windows you could be told you can't drive your car any further and face a fine and points on your licence!

I have access to a 'tint man' light meter that is used to measure window tints. I used the tint man on mine just for curiosity sake. The VRS front side windows allow 71-73% of light through. The factory sunset glass read 42-46% light transmission.

I would like the rears darker really.

Great post mate. Thanks :)
