right. I have pushed the car today in the wet , it now has 900 miles on, so my dunlops no longer have the excuse of being "run in" and they are worse than the nangkang winters I traded my old car in with on my old alloys. If nagkang winters on a warm wet day are better than the dunlops, the dunlops suck.....

I will have them on fleabay in Nov when I put winters on again....

If I didn't use my OE alloys for my winter tyres I would possibly take you up on that, I've used those pirellis before and they are ok.... the thing is, I will be removing these tyres in Nov for winters, so I will be able to have my tyres of choice , the maxxis, which put a huge smile on my face when driving the car, whereas today I'm just "understeer........ blaarg... sloooowwwww" a bit like the guy with the audi in that test vid posted in another thread! lol...

I may even try the federal RSR's, but they cost 50% more than the maxxis, so maybe not... I wouldn't buy those pirelli neros given a choice, I remember them being "avarage" on my mark I vRS, wheras the maxxis just rock. I dont want to go down the "average" route again....

After doing 50k in a vRS II I really do find the choice of tyre makes or breaks the car! (maybe I'm just a tyre snob! lol)

edit: I'll post up in the for sale when the dunlops go on fleabay, I'm only gonna put a £50 reserve on for all 4, and just take what I'm given. You may end up with a bargin!

Cheers,

i get tyres that cheap & only bought those to get a set of standard Black Gigaro.

Those tyres are not to my liking, must be that i like understeer.

(actually carrying those wheels in the back reminded me how it feels driving a Hatch with the spare carried and the weights on,

which is nothing like one feels or handles like without that weight at the rear.)

best my old one handled was when my contis first wore out, I replaced the front with maxxis Z1's, and had half worn contis on the back... it suddenly became "pointy" with no understeer at all, and oversteer available on lift off! just the difference btween a grippy front and a loose back...

maybe next spring I should get budgets for the back and maxxis on the front ;) (but then I like to have matched tyres if I can)

Lol :)

I find them pretty good, but then I have a longer wider chassis and less power to provoke them.

Contis were better but not noticeably so.

Good years still good?

I haven't used goodyears since the old "directional" F1's, and they were good.... my last vRS had contis on, and they were fine (until about 3 mill where they ceased to work at all!)

I'm with sharkrider - just can't get on with the Dunlops. I had more feedback from the Nexen winters even when it was nudging +20 degrees outside. Back feels much more planted now I have Conti SC5's on the rear; looking forward to the fronts being done to match in a few thousand miles or so.

Very interesting to read about your tyres experiences. I am tempted to try those Maxxis you are writing so highly about.

I however have no problems with Dunlops so far. Perhaps I am not pushing them as hard as you do? Impossible to tell... We shall see at Bedford in three days ;).

What Nangkang's did you run SV2?

  • Author

Yes, SV2's

So it was you that posted about the SV2 on tyrereview.co.uk?

  • Author

Yes, I sent the Dunlop review a few days ago, and reviewed the sv2 about 2 years ago...

Sorry for the thread hijack, Do you still stand by your review about the SV2 and rate them highly? Are you still on that same set from 2 years ago?

I was, but I traded them in with my old car, they are very good on proper winter conditions , but get it above 5C and they just go soft and slidy, best on ice and snow and cold.... It's weird, the colder they get, the better they get! Good budget winters... They don't rock the world, but they do the job :)

Mileage going up fast! I've not even ticked over 500 yet.

I wanted more than 1000 on before the track day this weekend ;) hasn't used any oil.. (but then neither did my old CAVE engine at this miles...

+1 on the maxxis. Bought then from SharkRiders recommendations and haven't looked back since. Awesome tyre.

Bonus is they cost my £56 per corner...

My Adrenalines have surprised me. I'm getting traction control kicking in more now in the wet but there is still plenty of cornering grip and still some mileage left. May last the Summer. I'll look into the Maxxis when it's time.

you have some quality tyres there tho Martyn!

I have no problem spending up to £100 a tyre as the car is for fun too and I'd feel bad if I couldn't get the most out of the car because of tyres. But if there are tyres that do the same for less I'll consider them. I was considering a Pirelli next since its been a while or a Goodyear as I've never tried them.

Don't worry I won't be. There's almost too much choice now
