Hi. I had my PD130 custom mapped yesterday, although the performance is amazing, the car seems to be overfuelling a lot. Before the remap, it had the PD160 intake mod. It RR'd standard at 135 bhp and remapped to 185bhp and 300 lbft but they said that the standard filter was quite restrictive so this was removed and an aftermarket one was fitted which should give it a bit more - 190ish - The temperature while the car was rr'd was 26'C.

The ECU was removed and reprogrammed and then put back into the car, and I was told that it can take some miles for it to "re learn" my driving style and that the car might be slightly peaky. I've covered nearly 500 miles since the remap (Cant stop driving it! ) and ive noticed that under hard acceleration in the first four gears there is quite an amount of noticeable smoke - can be seen in the passenger mirror in daylight and through the rear view mirror at night.

Before the remap there was slight smoke under hard acceleration in the higher gears but this was only visible at night; i do expect smoke to increase as I imagine fuelling is altered as part of the remap, but it is quite smokey. Could it be heat related? Does it sound like it is overfuelling? and can this smoking do any damage to the car, i.e. the cat?

Jabbasport. Was part of the group buy. Dont get me wrong, I love the remap and its smoothness - my friend who has just sold his remapped ibiza was following me in his new car and commented when we stopped on how smokey the car was, which got me wondering...

Edited to add - just been out driving, temp 31'c was taking it easy generally but had a bit of open road and it puts out lots of black smoke under full throttle which tails off at about 2200 and comes back at about 3500rpm until there is a gear change. Most noticeable in 4th. Now wondering if its the map, or the heat, or the intake or the filter or a combination of the above!!

Wait until a cooler day to see if it still does it.

I've found mine smokes quite a bit on a hot day.

As does mine. Colder days will be much better, however you could invest in an exhaust system and FMIC and i've also heard good things about turning the EGR valve off to cut down soot.

my car was smoking like a winner today! coming up the m3 - i had a smoke screen behind me! i slowed down because i was worried! didnt realise the weather would effect it! :(

All the Furbys at Brunters today were smoking like a good un. On the way home mine was terrible.

And as for the fooking heat soak

The fact is the Furby don't like the heat. Just more reason to get a FMIC. Now I'v seen it in the flesh on Cols car - I'm in love.

Cool, thanks everyone!! I've been out in it again, and now the temp has dropped to 25ish it smokes a lot less, i think the ecu is starting to adapt as well as it seems much smoother now. I'll wait for the temp to drop and see how it goes. I thought the cupra intake and filter may help but I guess it IS hot at the moment. If it still does it on cooler days, im sure jabba could tweek it if necessary.

Yep. The more air you can get in there, the more completely the fuel can burn, and the less soot

I can't see an aftermarket panel filter giving 5bhp over a clean stock filter.

Most aftermarket filter companies say an increase of 5% is possible, although this is at the highest RPM. It also depends on the quality of the standard paper element. These aftermarket airfilters are also more effective on newer cars with MAF sensors and lambda probes which cause more fuel to be added to keep the correct mixture with the extra airflow.

:P I agree with you, and i did say "ish" and the 5bhp ish figure was what jabba said they expected the map to develop with the filter over the 185 it developed on the rr in their new building - I was guessing they would know more about it than me!

I only changed it because it was a) a standard replacable filter and near due a change anyway and according to them, the standard jobby was holding the car back slightly, and this would allow the map to fulfill full potential. This may just have been them trying to get a bit more money out of me or it may have actually made a difference - either way - if

Why ?

Diesels need as much air as possible to a point it's not like the fuel/air ratio in a petrol car. 5bhp is a normal claim and with a remap this is possible, the paper element in a standard filter isn't brilliant IMHO swap to a green cotton and more clean air is available and you get less soot.

The TT vent thing will help a bit as well in this weather I'm guessing

Mine smokes more in hot weather too (Jabba, exhaust, 160 intake etc)

Anything over 10C i find smoke is more noticable... 30C yesterday :(
