Castle Combe Summer Acton Day 2013! 14/9/13 2! x Tracktime & Clubstand

Featured Replies

Can't guarantee I can do it but I'd be interested next year. How much of a gap was there between sessions? Enough for brakes to cool down? That I've found is the cars main weak point.

An hour between sessions Martyn, plenty of time.

48 minutes from stop of one to start of the other IIRC.

Time between sessions was enough to keep tyres warmed up, but let other bits cool down :D

That sounds perfect. Didn't do it this year purely because of work. Looks fun and I have to see the CitiGo

That's quite interesting because it shows the differences (strengths and weaknesses) between two completely different vehicles.

My lack of pace on the straights (200bhp and 1450kg) but the extra traction of 4x4 and the ability to get on the power earlier does show.

Having checked the footage just now I did 7 laps in both sessions, out of the 14 laps I had 5 laps of 1:29.

Four seconds per lap slower than your firebreathing Fabia.

My best top speed on the same straight was only 102mph, 18mph slower in the aerodynamically barn like Yeti. :giggle:

Also interesting that by going out in the morning we got more track time.

I usually get 5 laps or 6 if driving a powerful car like a nutter (in the public sessions), rather than 7.

The GPS does show up some interesting speeds, my Octy was hitting about 110 or a bit more on the main straight before Quarry, and most of the time I was pulling over. :D

I'm still waiting for my first session to upload, its a huge file. Don't remember things taking this long in the past!

I did manage a 1.25.5 on one lap though, so that's the quickest I've been round Combe on road tyres. The way Cossie was cornering though I need to invest in some sticky rubber!

You can definitely see how your confidence has increased as you've done more Brisky days.

I think it has a little.

I think I lost about 2 seconds a lap proper slowing down for Camp corner.  I think if it had been a proper trackday I would eventually have tried to hold 4th gear and see what kind of speed I could maintain around it.  It frightens me still though, even after all these years - quite possibly more than Quarry to be honest.  This is why I was down to 3rd gear @ circa 65mph or less around it.

PS: Feeler thread for Spring 2014 is up. ;)

That's exactly it Jason. After the full day I did at Combe, it certainly boosted my confidence in Camp corner. Looking at the speedo I'm in 4th gear, and turning in at about 80mph. That's in the bone dry though, certainly wouldn't be attempting that in damp conditions!

Quarry was a 70mph entry for me and nowhere near the apex on the first session...but managed 80 on the second and started to threaten the apex a little bit

Got upto 135 on the straight towards Avon rise, all be it with plenty of heat soak due to running the car on tick over the entire time we were waiting to go out on track....I'll switch it off next time,I could feel it almost straight away!

More cold air feeds and a R-Tech cold air intake kit on its way soon.....as well as a set of snot grip tyres!

Camp Corner I always used to slow way too much for. There's enough track to use I just didn't trust the car could do it.

Thats pretty good on road tyres, i'm only in the 1:21's with track tyres.

Interesting for me, the last time I was on track was in July (the vw/audi day) and my best time that day was a 1:21.88, and the car was empty, and only me in it.

On saturday, my best lap was my final lap in the 2nd session and was a 1:21.69 and that was with the toolkit in the back and a passenger fitted :D

As for camp it's not a corner that bothers me too much, in the octy I find i'm quicker if I brake after the yellow line for the pitlane and drop it 3rd, then foot down all the way through the corner.

If I leave it in 4th, I find myself braking too much for the corner then, and end up slower.

Quarry I always end up on a different line and tower I think I show too much respect too, i'm sure I used to be faster through tower back when I was in a toledo.

:) hehe

Uve got the bug now

Brisky Session two from the Yeti front cam.

Apologies for the wittering, I was still buzzing from session one and had someone to talk to! :D

Watch out for the rather rapid well sorted Octy of Cossie1 and Dave's bit of track narrowing at Quarry using his estate. ;)

Ha ha ha, @ 7 mins 50 secs, see me in distance disappear over Avon rise, 7:55, Richard coming over brow, see me do my spin.

I find the estate amusing :D

I still just assume ur car offends u just before u go on track :D

I dont know what you mean Lloyd, "if in doubt, flat out!" what can I say,

Red on the map is no overtaking surely ?

BTW i was slow every corner ha ha

I know im coming over all ar5ey but hey if nobody said anything 2 years down the line we could be like the saxo forum, I just wanted to note it was disconcerting

Wow, I have a sleep and all hell has broken loose,

Anyway, I refer to April's track day @ Combe, I was forced of the racing line through the Esses by a 205 who paid no attention to anything whatsoever.  Lloyd can vouch for that he was in car at time.

I will admit I was quicker than normal round the circuit, I did apologise to people who I had a couple of "moments" with, one definitely couldn't be helped, cant do anything if a car is driving at 65mph, on the far right of Avon rise, way off the "line", and I am approaching at 125 + then I will take the racing line to get through the corner to avoid a coming together as they enter Quarry on the wrong angle and force themselves wide as that wouldn't have been my fault.  The second was at Tower, think it was vRS19TD and another Octy, I overtook the Octy, came into the no overtaking zone, then had no room to move left to get a better line into corner, so i was carrying more speed through it and darted past when it was clear as I was moving, both times, yes my fault but spoke to relevant people about it directly Afterwards! I would have been faster if it hadn't been for a Pesky Boost Leak, was loosing 3psi.

What I cant understand is, if you had felt "bullied" by the "Nutters" then why not come and speak to us there and then when we returned to the stand. we are all approachable, not like we are massive counts or anything.  Believe it or not Castle Combe meet April Last year was my first ever track day, never taken a car on track just drag racing at Santa Pod.  So I am a relative novice like you compared to Richard, that's 4 Combe meets and Bedford How Fast? so 5 in total.

I have a Spare seat anytime you would like to come out and get some pointers round track to help you, not being rude or insulting to people's driving, just want to help fellow brisky's.

I love the fact that we have Noobs and Experienced people on track together, as it can give the Noobs, some helpful looks at the line if we have overtaken before a corner they are uncomfortable with.

Or quite simply line the faster guys and girls up so they get on track first. As with our 15 min sessions only the exceptionally fast are going to be lapping more novice drivers.

Or quite simply do what the girl racer in the 106 did, came out of pits, stuck to left and kept her speed down, everyone went past, then she had clear track to go round in, pretty much the whole session

Guys, come on, play nice, it was a great day out, everybody had a good time and when you boil it down to the bare bones it is a race circuit where you try and go as fast as you can.

Everybody has a different ability and cars are all set up differently so if you choose to go on track you will be passed and will also pass people, that is how simple it is.

No need for an inquisition after the event.     It is a bit of fun with no championship points or prizes, see you all in the spring then?

Exactly.

Like ^^^ (positive votes reached, even though we now get 50 :D )

Maybe we should have a few prizes, fastest lap, slowest lap, most courteous, complete 2hat and so on....

ffs, Now you tell me

You didn't overtake me in the final session, therefore you lose. :P   In fact its sibart who wins for passing the mongrel in both sessions :D

Korban got a 5.9 for artistic merit from me, for his off.

checked my oil on friday night before leaving, right on the 'max' line. Checked yesterday and had to put almost 1/2 a litre in and today the Oil Service light came on, It was only done in April. No signs of any leaks.

Had a close look at one of the pics James I sent, the tyre sidewall is under some strain :D
