Thinking of Buying this as a run around

Featured Replies

I bought a 90bhp classic TDI last November for £760 with 246k on it.

I've done 15k with no major problems.

Zero service history.

Love it. TDI is awesome.

I'd go for it.

Providing the MAF sensor? Is fine and not turning the turbo off like happened to my parents they go quite well. It's almost throwaway money too. Its a lot of car and boots are massive. Loads went wrong with ours like electric windows, locks, etc but lots of this was down to water ingress. Even after all that it still made me buy my first Skoda 6 years ago

My mum has got a 1.9 TDI Octavia. She's had it from new on a 54 plate and its now done 100,000 miles. It has given her no trouble with the only work required being service items (brake pads and tyres). Starts every time and is an incredibly practical car.

It's just about run in.

I've just picked up a 133,000 mile Octy and am amazed by how solid everything still feels and the 110 engine feels strong, flexible and gives a good turn of pace. That motor looks to have been cared for with the all important oil changes and its sitting at a great price. If you look how many of the VW 1900 units out there are still running and have astronomical miles on them I don't think you can go wrong.

Our local taxi drivers cosistantly get over 300,000 miles from thier TDi's, keeping them regularly serviced.

buy it! treat it gently for the next 20,000 then its run in.

Someone on here has one at nearly 700,000 trundlenut i think.

Basically if its running well go for it, all other bits from bushes to bearings are cheap as feck and like lego to fit

The eight electric windows would clinch the deal for me.

Looking at the regs plate i'd say it was a " DUF " :giggle:

Tbh i wouldt go for it, thats actually a lot of money for a old high mileage 1.9, theres better bargains to be had

Id rather spend my money (depending on what you need it for obviously) a small petrol that is easy to fix and cheap and chips to run. I know the 1.9's are very good on fuel (once again depending on your needs) but its very hit and miss with the older derv VAG's ( and the new ones!)

£450 sounds good an all but when your looking for a dirt cheap motor £450 can give you a wide choice, i bought a V reg 306 with 87,000 FPSH for £200.

Dont get me wrong i know these engines can do mega miles, local taxi has one on 260,000 and still going strong with only general maintenance but they can also go horrifically wrong.

Looks good to me, robust solid engine, look after it and it'll run forever.

There are reasons a french car only gets £450, tbh theres more trouble in one of them in a week than an octy would give in a year :giggle:

I've had a ratio of 4:2 French cars to VAG's and the French have been more reliable. The French car was £200 btw ;)

Yeah but you gotta drive them lol. Heaps of tin pot rubbish

seriously I have had a few pug/citroens and they are reliable depending on variant. 2.0 hdi fell apart 3 times massive engine or fuel system failure.

But a 1.6 hdi that i put 94,000 miles on only having to change tyres and brakes

Thanks for the comments :) I did buy one, but not the one in the auction. Got a 2002 Octavia TDI elegance 184k and it runs perfect :)

Run it on svo or wvo.

How did you know what I run it on lol ;)

It was just a guess!!!

Well it was a good one, its on BIO with odd bits WVO ;) anyone else thinking running these on SVO WVO, just keep an eye out for ring gumming/raising oil level... Also do not stick SVO WVO in the PD engines! dont want no people reading this thread and breaking cars!

Me too!!! Bio at £1.10/ litre tax paid, and I have some svo at 85p tax paid.

Just about to put some more bio in (I get 4 twenty litre Kerry cans filled).
