Front nearside wheel smoking?

Featured Replies

Hi guys, for the last few days or so I have noticed a slight 'knocking' sound as I slowed down (though it could be wind noise etc that drowns it out at high speed). Nothing seemed amiss so figured I'd leave it for the service I have booked in 2 weeks. This was also on one of the first journeys I had made in weeks without music on so figured it'd prob been going on for a while. However.. When I pulled up this morning i could definitely smell cooked brakes & felt a lot of heat off of the nearside brake disc, and steam/smoke coming out.

The brakes & discs were new 2 months ago, and have not had any issues since then. The car also drives, brakes and seems fine over all. It doesn't pull to one side when braked, or accelerated. The car can be manually pushed on the street without any excessive force (ie I can push it as dead weight) and aside from this slight knocking noise and this new occurrence of smoke doesn't seem to be an issue. The disc and pad also look identical to the offside and show no signs of damage.

The car is pure motorway miles these days, and is driven gently 90 percent of the time due to high commuting milage.

With moving house this weekend I am desperately short of time, can anyone she'd any advice on what the issue could be before I have to call the AA out of leave it with an unknown garage?

Cheers guys

Sounds like a sticky/seized caliper on the near side.

Sounds like something you shoudn't ignore. But hey...

I have had similar and it was a pebble stuck in between the caliper and disk. But if it is hot it is more than likely a binding brake.

Best pop into place that did work or somewhere else if you have lost faith in them, don't want to risk warping the new disc, moving this weekend too sod any more expense! Good luck.

my civic had issues with smoke from the rear near side wheel. It was ceased caliper.

You need to fit it asap as your discs will need replacing, pads wear out and your car will stink.

If your front n/s wheel is smoking then perhaps a nicotine patch might do the trick? :giggle: :wonder:

On a serious side, bad luck with the timing of this: hope it gets fixed soon and without too much (if any) cost.

The brake is binding. When the pads and disks were changed it pushed the caliper, piston and disk back plate into areas that hadn't been used for a long time. There will be corrosion and crap build up here that should have been cleaned out as part of the job.

You just need to remove the pads, clean up the caliper, and apply copper grease to the moving parts.

Don't keep driving it - you will wreck the disk and because of the heat being generated you may wreck the wheel bearing as well.
