Ready To Order? Almost......

Featured Replies

Hi All,

After much deliberation (& useful research on this site!), I'm almost ready to place an order for a new

Yeti 2.0 TDI (140) 4x4 Elegance with the following options - Spare wheel kit, Sunroof & Towbar. Have I missed any factory fit "essentials" ......although I know this is a personal thing........

Having sold our campervan, I'm looking for a new smallish SUV capable of towing a small/medium sized caravan & having test driven a few alternatives I've settled on the Yeti. (Not difficult really as I nearly bought one when they first came out, but was disappointed when the fold-down boot cycle carrier didn't come to fruition from the prototype.........)

But I have a question......having not owned a diesel car before, I mainly do short urban trips & commutes during the week (with longer journeys done monthly-ish in the camper)......Will I have any DPF problems in between the longer runs? The dealer assures me this won't be a problem, but I'm a little nervous having seen a friend have terrible issues with his last Mazda 6 going into "limp you home mode" with his DPF light on!

Also, can anyone offer any advice on towing mirrors? I read a slightly poor view of Yeti mirrors & attachment difficulties in a recent caravan magazine?

Now just have to choose colour............

Cheers

I do mainly short trips in London and then in summer lots of camping blasts... Mine has done 24,000 miles over nearly 3 years and I have only noticed a regen twice in that time when I got home after a trip. I've never had the light come on (which forces you to do a drive there and then at a certain rpm and speed). So you should be fine as long as you do get to do some longer faster trips in the Yeti from time to time. JUST doing short little trips will unfortunately lead to DPF problems.

As to towing mirrors: wait for Llanigraham or Iainm1970 (or something like that! Oops) to comment. Or send them a PM.

I agree with Johann.

Kitten & I do mainly very short trips but take extended runs from Brighton to Poole in Dorset about 4 times a year.

We have noticed NO regen issues, and have NEVER seen the DPF warning light come on.

Oh, and why are you not having Park Assist as an option??? This option is INCREDIBLY useful............and AWESOME fun to boot.

On a final note, welcome to Briskoda.

Towing mirrors.

I use the type that "sucker" onto the mirrors and have been very happy with them. A few others use the type that clamp to the edge of the mirror and seem happy too. "ucker" ones are cheaper!

Park Assist.

If you live in a rural area, like me, I doubt it is worth the extra dosh, but in an urban area, perhaps. But I can park the car anyway!

I can park my car too Graham! BUT I like gadgets, I LOVE passengers' reaction to seeing my car steer itself AND I hate obvious blank buttons on a dashboard! (The heated screen doesn't count here since it's empty button does not in fact look empty on the HVAC control panel of the Yeti - so I'm happy not having that!)

We know you like your gadgets, Johann! :giggle:

However, in the urban setting the "Park Assist" is potentially going to get used more often than in a rural setting, so in my mind it is money better spent elsewhere.

Some people need their little toys, others of us rely on the skills and experience we have acquired ... eh Graham?

Can you use park assist with a caravan attached?

Now that would be worth watching.

I can parallel park with my trailer sans the PA thankfully.

If you're planning on keeping the Yeti for longer than three years you might want to think about the manufacturer extend warranty which will take you up to 5 years. If I understood the ordering process correctly you can only get the Skoda extend warranty by ordering it before delivery.

And VW seems to think PA is only for women!!!

See this post for some more ads like this (sorry MarieK). :giggle:

Now back OT: Colour: Go for whatever SWMBO likes. That is the ONLY way to choose a colour and keep the peace. (sorry MarieK). :giggle:

I havent chosen PA because I dont actually need it.

I learned from watching Reginald Molehusband on tv

Correct and if you order make sure they stamp the service book, I've got to get mine done at some time.

Towing mirrors ... I use Milenco Aeros on mine. Took a bit of adjusting after having used them on several Octavia vRS's, but now have them spot on.

Spec wise I would add the heated screen and tyre pressure monitor. My Yeti is too tall for our 1930's garage so heated screen has been great.

I've had VAG oil burners for 3 years and to date so far never seen the DPF light in use. If it comes on just keep the engine running and keep driving as it only takes 5 - 10 mins to clear. I did hear that a regen is linked to fuel level so you should not have a problem with a low tank of go-go juice. Keep a 1/4 tank minimum as a rule.

My Yeti has only done two regens in nearly a year that I can remember (no DPF light but engine idles over 1K when warm 90 degrees on the temp gauge) however my last 1.6 VAG diesel did regen quite a bit more.

Note that oil burners need more time to reach optimum operating temperature than a petrol so in the winter short run mpg may not be better or even as good as a petrol.

Thanks for all the replies, you've put my mind at ease re:the DPF issue. .....but I'm now a little confused by what a "regen " is?

BTW I am SWMBO so forgive me if some of questions are a bit " girly"!

I loved the 2 litre diesel but now that I have changed to 1.8 petrol (cheaper overall, given my annual mileage) I realise that, while not intrusive, the diesel was certainly a lot noisier. I do miss that extra bit of low-down torque, however - I have to negotiate a hairpin bend on a 1 in 5 hill leaving our village before the engine has warmed up, and the diesel certainly pulled away from it more eagerly than does the petrol (although it may well improve as the engine beds in, of course).

A Regen (regeneration) is when the cars ecu computer injects some extra diesel into the exhaust to burn off any soot collected in the DPF (diesel particulate filter.)

I've only noticed it 3 or 4 times in 2 Yetis over 40,000miles.

It's usually noticeable by a smelly hot exhaust and a raised idle speed to 1000rpm.

(that's how I understand it anyway.)

You may also find the engine cooling fan continues to run for a little while after you have turned the engine off. (Nothing to worry about.)

ALL questions are welcome here!

What this DPF does is to capture the smoke particulates you would normally see behind a diesel car when you press the throttle a bit... On these new cars you can't really tell from behind anymore if the car is a diesel or not. As stated above this "smoke" is captured in a container and when it gets full the and the engine is warm enough, it burns these particulates and then releases them to the atmosphere. So you only make little children sick in bursts, instead of making them sick wherever you drive. :giggle:

I know this may be a contentious point, but I would definitely recommend the speaker upgrade - if you like to listen to music or spoken word as you trundle along then there is a noticeable improvement with the additional speakers...

Yes, quality of sound is a serious factor for us & my current Soul Tempest stereo is superb......Is there a significant difference in quality between stereo unit in the Elegance vs the L&K? Our dealer is offering the L&K for little over £1400 more than my Elegance + specified options.....& I have to say it's seriously tempting given what else we'd get for the extra ££'s.

DAB would be great as we mainly listen to 6Music & heated screen will be useful as the garage is full of bikes & my car has no chance of entering such hallowed ground.....husband is (unsurprisingly) seduced by extra horsepower.......none of this helps me choose a colour though!!

The standard speaker set is very good compared to a lot of cars, so I would imagine the upgrade is tremendous, unfortunately my hearing is not as good as it used to be tending to hear too much bass rather than treble or mid so it would not be appreciated as much as it should, but if you like music in cars, for what it costs then go for it as it must be great to listen to.

I have no experience of the L&K, but the extra speakers in the Elegance, you get 12 in total, do make a big difference. The biggest advantage being that you don't have to have the volume cranked up to hear what is playing.

The extra speakers are an optional extra... they do NOT come standard with the Elegance spec. They sound good, but nowhere near as good as the BOSE ones I had had in my Audi.
