New key is how much?

Featured Replies

Just phoned the local Skoda dealer, they are quoting £160 for a remote key or £90 for a boring one and would need the car for a whole day, though it will only take them half an hour.

Is this in line with what people expect, or is there a cheaper way?

Tom

ebay. Get the blade cut at a locksmiths. If you get one without a transponder chip in it, you can swap the chip over along with the circuit board. If you get one with an uncoded chip, swap the circuit board over and someone local with VCDS can code it for you I think for a token sum.

OK, I didn't provide all the details

I've only just got the car, and it only came with one key. Ideally I'd like to get another radio key, and a spare simple key, but I wasn't expecting to spend £250.

I think you can only have two keys coded on an Octavia.

actionman 39 in the mk1 section might be able to help

that'll be me then! :hi:

I do car keys so give me a location & i'll sort a price. Postcode would be best so i can get accurate distance to work out traveling costs etc

BTW i do the full job, supply, cut & program

I know how you feel. There is nowhere in Aberdeen that does car keys other than the dealer. I this problem with my civic when the key snapped in the ignition. £300 lighter after that.

Hopefully you will get it sorted cheaper than quoted.

Its the price we pay for having cars that are difficult to steal (without someghow acquiring the keys first).

buy a used / new remote fob from ebay for £20 and just order the front part from the dealer

Sounds about right from the main dealer

Of course us L&K owners get 2 keys plus a valet key lol

I thought the system only accepted two keys. :S :S

you're 380 mile away from me! i doubt you'd want to cover my traveling costs! :)

that's still an expensive way of doing it. Even the key head (front part) costs a small fortune from the dealers. You can buy a full new, uncut & unprogrammed flip remote for £40. Find a shop that will cut the blade then ask Skoda how much they'll charge to program it to the car.

If they won't do it just do a google search for local auto locksmiths. I'm registered on a couple of key forums so I could see if there's anybody up your way

I PM'd Tom with a more local, but still reputable source; so it would be nice to get some sort of update since he asked the question...

Sorry for the lack of reply, for some reason the Briskoda forum has stopped talking to me. I haven't had a single message about these replies.

I'm off down to the parent in Derbyshire next week, so I phoned Skoda in Chesterfield. They will do a key just under £100, sadly it's up to 3 weeks delivery time.

I then phoned Skoda Aberdeen again, they are still quoting £160.

Interestingly, Chesterfield find the car correctly from the Reg, Aberdeen however find a Fabia if they use the reg and need to use the chassis number.

Chesterfield will code the key for £38, Aberdeen want £48 if I recall. So I'm wondering if I can buy a blank flip and remote, get it cut by...a capable cutter, then just stick it into Skoda for the coding to be done?

Does coding just involve the chip that allow you to start it, or do they also do the remote locking etc?

Tom

Inc vat it pretty much cost me £200

£50 to remove stolen key

£50 new key

£50 new fob

£50 re code new fob.

Someone with VCDS could have knocked £100 off that ;)

Are you saying that if I buy a blank key and remote fob from eBay for instance, get that cut by someone, then by crossing the proud owner of a VCDS (and the knowledge) with a suitable renumeration they can code the key and the remote locking for me?

Tom

The place I referred you to Tom included coding (including the refound original key) at the price I told you. They also gave me a very healthy discount on top of the price quoted, possibly as a goodwill gesture for a previous cockup.

Although I don't know much about VCDS, comments on other forums suggest that even with VCDS and the original code from the key tag it's still not possible - but that's for Aunother VAG brand.

If you have the SKC: http://www.ross-tech.com/vag-com/cars/key-matching-4digit.html

If you don't have the SKC then you'll need a trip to the dealer to be fleeced, or VAG-Tacho to get it.

if you're heading to Chesterfield at some point then i'm not that far out of your way if you're traveling down the M1. I can supply a full remote key, cut it & program it. I have a few different bits of kit to read the SKC from the car
